Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter

  • Overview

Every Mac with a Mini DisplayPort allows you to connect an external display or projector using an adapter. You can use an external display as your main workspace or to extend your desktop, or you can work in mirrored mode with a projector so you can view what your audience sees.

Use the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter to connect your Mac to a standard analogue monitor, projector, or LCD that uses a VGA connector or cable. Review the documentation or check with the manufacturer of your monitor to make sure you're choosing the right adapter.

      Doesn't work with Samsung TV

I bought a new MacBook last week and got the VGA adapter so I could use it with my TV as I did my old PowerBook G4 (via the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter). The new adapter worked fine when I connected it to an overhead projector, but it doesn't seem to send a readable signal to my Samsung LN40A650 television. I tried booting in to Windows via Boot Camp and got the same result. I guess I'll have to try the DVI adapter with a converter from DVI to HDMI to use this with my TV. A Mini DisplayPort to HDMI (or even regular DisplayPort, which can be directly converted without using audio) would be ideal, but there doesn't seem to be any sign of that.

      Disappointing

I can not get this thing to output to my Samsung LN-4042H 40 inch LCD. The old miniDVI to VGA worked no problem with my old MacBook. I have checked and it is no I can not get this thing to output to my Samsung LN-4042H 40 inch LCD. The old miniDVI to VGA worked no problem with my old MacBook. I have checked and it is not a TV problem, so certainly something hardware or driver related. Also $29.99 for a video dongle seems steep to me.

This adapter can't make up it's mind if it is going to work in normal mode or if it is going to pick a mode at random. On the very first attempt to use it the picture flickered a bit but was otherwise OK. When the class ends I walk over to my second lecture and plug in my computer and the adapter and NOTHING happens. I try again and the screen on my mac goes dark then nothing. I have all my students walk back over to the last calssroom and the thing still doesn't work. My first lecture of the year was a real stinker as a result. Very disappointed. I spent the extra $20 because I thought I was buying quality... I was wrong. Go buy a generic knockoff. At least when it breaks you only spent $6

We have bought dozens over the past 6 years for our schools and have also bought some from off brand sites. These brand names will all work initially but often give out at the same rate as the off brand dongles (3-6 months). Trying another dongle from a (big online) brand name competitor that has high reviews so fingers crossed. As we don't require going into high resolution projector displays XGA/WXGA is the most common, or lower resolution so the off brand ones are just as good (aka break as often) as the name brand dongle. If going into a higher resolution display, this my be the best choice.
