Apple Research & Technology Support

Programme Overview

The Apple Research & Technology Support (ARTS) programme represents a recognition of the importance of science in our society, an endorsement of the leading research institutions in Europe, and a celebration of the talent of researchers in all fields.

Science research in the 21st Century has two vital components: human talent and the technology needed to realise its potential. The ARTS programme brings that talent and technology together. It is designed to help Europe’s young scientists achieve their research goals, by giving them the best tools for the task. It also creates an international network of researchers and their institutions, bound by a common desire to use technology efficiently and effectively.

Europe has some of the world’s greatest science institutions, with a history of groundbreaking research that affects all our lives. Those institutions have a pool of rich talent, brimming with ideas and plans for important new R&D projects — but they need technology resources to deliver them.

Many in the science community regard Apple as the best technology platform for research. It combines the flexibility, robustness and reliability of the Mac with a familiar UNIX environment. The Mac platform has the computational power to handle the most demanding tasks, but it also offers a set of tools to help researchers present and communicate their results easily and elegantly.

We want the best of both worlds in computer systems. We need fast computing on a grid, and we have to be able to dig deep into the system to program our algorithms. On the other hand, we want a friendly environment where we can easily manage emails, and write presentations and reports. The Mac can do it all.
