Thin, minimal design.
The slim, yet sturdy Smart Cover protects your iPad screen without covering up its durable aluminium back. So your iPad still looks and feels like an iPad — just with a little extra protection.
The Smart Cover is made of polyurethane and features a soft, colour-matched microfibre lining that helps keep your display clean.
An aluminium hinge magnetically aligns the Smart Cover with iPad for a perfect fit. While magnets inside help it stay put.
The Smart Cover does double duty as a keyboard stand. Fold it back to tilt iPad into a comfortable writing position.
Wake on open. Sleep on close.
Open the Smart Cover and iPad magically wakes up. Close it and iPad automatically goes to sleep.
FaceTime and film stand.
The Smart Cover folds in just the right places to become the perfect FaceTime and film-watching stand.

And Smart it is! The cover works a treat; just remove it from the packaging and attach it to your iPad 2.
The magnets automatically align themselves so there's no fuss or frustration involved whatsoever.
In use the Smart Cover excels itself. Being able to use it as a stand is great; from watching TV on Demand to the photo slide shows... and it comes into it's own when using it as a keyboard rest; typing on the iPad 2 is made even easier.
There are many different covers out there for people, and what one person likes another person may prefer another brand.
But for me this cover from Apple really is 'smart!' …

I leave it connected all of the time; just flipping it back to use it. A nice feature is how opening the cover turns the iPad on and closing it turns it off. My only concern is that the back of the ipad might get scratched, but it's pretty obvious that the cover is only for the screen. …

3 yrs old, heavy use, need to replace it now

I admit I am It worked well for three full years, but I'm jealous of my wife's iPad air with a much better designed smart cover. I admit I am a heavy user of the ipad and cover and uncover it many times per day. After three full years, my iPad is still working brilliantly -my Android friends had to replace their tablet after two years :-) but now the cover for mine is completely worn out. Need a new one, they're expensive and the choice is now limited to grey. Well, it's beautiful grey, so I won't complain. …

Whilst it looks good, retains the slim feel of the iPad and it's nice to see it unlock after opening, I wouldn't buy another.
Somehow my iPad has a scratch down the screen, despite it being very well looked after. Also, and this is quite a fail, when I removed the case, the side edge where the magnet touches, is really quite badly damaged, right along the length of the iPad. The magnet also has the same damage, it looks like the magnet has stripped the silver away completely.
It has also stopped standing properly, in landscape, it's too weak after 2 years of use and just topples back.
If you really want to protect your iPad, go for the Case rather than the Cover. It's pretty much useless. …

Does the smart cover fit the ipad1?
- Asked by Laurence R from Kapellen
Since the exterior of the iPad 1 and iPad 2 are the same dimensions it does fit the top of the scree Since the exterior of the iPad 1 and iPad 2 are the same dimensions it does fit the top of the screen. However, the iPad 2 has magnets built into the machine in order to respond to the magnets in the smart cover. This allows the cover to stay in place and be appropriately aligned. Also, this allows the cover to lock or awaken the screen. Essentially, the smart cover will not stay on the iPad 1 because there are no magnets. I would not recommend buying a smart cover if you only own an iPad 1. …
