Apple 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter (for MacBook Pro with Retina display)

  • Overview

The 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector so if someone trips over it, the lead disconnects harmlessly and your MacBook Pro stays put safely. It also helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector lights up; an amber light lets you know that your notebook is charging, while a green light tells you that you have full charge. An AC lead is provided with the adapter for maximum lead length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives you an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect travelling companion, the adapter has a clever design that allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with MacBook Pro with Retina display.

Not sure if this is the right power adapter for your Mac?

See this article for more details about choosing the right one.

Knowing which specific Mac model you have is important. If you are running OS X Lion (10.7) or later, go to the “” menu at the top left of your screen, choose “About this Mac” then click the “More Info...” button. Your Mac model and generation will be displayed.

Has little fold out flaps which allow you to wind the cable up nice and tidy ready to through in the briefcase. The unit does seem to get warm when charging.. (50 - 70 oC?) Though nothing out of the ordinary for any high amp charger. I appreciate a fast charge over a slow, low amp one. From 3% to 100% in 2 hours is remarkable and slightly off subject but the charge then lasts the whole work day and beyond.. it's now 23:22 and I've still got 23%!!!

      Amazing!

I have never had any issues with the Magsafe 2 adapter. It does never fall out when I don't want it to. It doesn't get hot and the cables is really strong. Not as bad as everyone lets on, but not perfect.

The people who are complaining must use their equipment in very strange (inappropriate) conditions. Melting power bricks and frayed wires sound like a user-related issues. If you are careful when you wind your cable up and keep the power adapter in a sensible location, it will last you a long time. That said, as an owner of a Summer 2012 Retina MacBook Pro, I've noticed a little bit of small cracking in the rubber cable shielding near the input point on the brick. This is the point that gets the most stress, as it is where the cable is pulled to its greatest angle when winding it up for storage. It would be nice to see Apple considering the potential for this kind of wear; a stronger, more flexible support point would be useful.

      What are Apple playing at?

I ne My office has 5 Macbooks and we are on average having to replace 2 of these power adapters every year. Last year, one shorted out and nearly caused a fire. I never leave my Mac charging overnight any more! We don't have this problem with the cheapest Windows PCs so I cant understand why such a 'premium' product is shipped with such a lousy power adapter that cannot stand up to more than a few months of normal use in office conditions.

      Stunned by the poor quality

Sad to say I have exactly the same problem as everyone else -- the cable just splits open. I've had Macs since 1986 and never had a problem with power supply. A Sad to say I have exactly the same problem as everyone else -- the cable just splits open. I've had Macs since 1986 and never had a problem with power supply. And £65 to replace!! Insulting to rip off loyal customers in this way. What is going on Apple? Safari is useless. It's hit or miss whether pages load. I use Chrome now. We pay the higher costs for better quality. Now the quality is deteriorating. I love my MacBook Pro, it's a wonderful computer, but this power adaptor is a joke. Apple should fix it or replace it. It has a known defect. I sold my Apple stock. I have serious concerns about the company now.

It's stability compared to my old PC laptop is fantastic. The one problem is the power supply. I have had my Mac for 2 ½ years, give or take, and every year or so, I have to buy a new power adapter. I've just ordered the second replacement unit for delivery tomorrow. I'm a writer by profession these days, and I rely on having computer access 24/7. It's working fine one moment, then I notice that the screen has gone darker, the LED on the connector no longer glows green and I'm on battery power. It fails without warning or notice. Come on Apple, I'm sure you can design and build a better unit that this.
