iMovie Logo Do it yourself. Hey, it's free.

iMovie is an easy-to-use digital video editing software application in the classic Macintosh tradition: with convenient pull-down menus and with icons that represent familiar tools and objects. It gives you the ability to cut and paste video clips and graphics simply by pointing and clicking. This integration with all things Macintosh is especially helpful for beginners: it means that much of what you’ve already learned from using one program on your iMac will come in handy when you start using iMovie.

Capture from DV camcorder
Once you’ve connected your camcorder to your iMac with your FireWire cable, iMovie switches to Camera Mode. This lets you download video from your camcorder to your iMac. Clicking on any of the video buttons lets you control the camcorder directly, as though you’re pushing those same buttons on the camcorder itself.
A single FireWire cable connects the iMac and your camcorder. iMovie controls and captures audio and video over this single wire—no more cable clutter.
On-screen buttons provide remote camera control for capturing, recording, playing, rewinding, fast-forwarding, and pausing.
You can preview video from the camcorder on the computer screen.
Automatic scene detection creates individual clips of each scene you shoot.
Audio and video is digitally transferred between iMovie and your camcorder. This maintains the perfect digital quality of your movies.
You can import still images into your movie.

Note: the FireWire port is sometimes called the IEEE 1394 port or (in the case of Sony camcorders) the i.LINK port. It’s the same thing.

Export to DV camcorder
Want to send edited video from your iMac to your camcorder? Simply transfer (or “export”) it back to your camcorder via your FireWire cable by choosing “Export Movie” from your iMac’s File Menu. iMovie takes it from there—even telling the camcorder to start recording.
Play back finished movies full screen on your computer
  Save movies as QuickTime files
Select from a variety of predefined formats for creating e-mail, web, and CD-ROM movies
Transfer finished movies or individual clips back to your camcorder, and view them at full size on your TV
Save a single frame as a PICT or JPEG image
Edit
Use drag-and-drop editing of video clips, audio tracks, transitions, and titles
Trim video clips to remove unnecessary footage
Cut, copy, and paste clips or parts of a clip
Reorder and shuffle video clips using a timeline

Adding audio clips
You can import music from your favorite CDs. Slip a music CD-ROM into the DVD drive of your DV-model iMac, and its contents show up in iMovie’s Music panel. Pick the song you want and drag it into the Audio Viewer.

Adding narration
You can also click the Record button on the Sounds panel and speak into the built-in microphone on your iMac to create a narration.
Add musical soundtracks to existing video
Enhance a movie with sound effects
Record voice narration using the built-in microphone or an external microphone
Import songs from an audio CD
Fade audio in and out and adjust volume
  Import AIFF sound files

Titles and transitions
Add opening titles and closing credits to a movie
Select from dozens of predefined titles and transitions
  Use TrueType and PostScript fonts
  Enhance titles with customizable colors
Add transitions to go smoothly from scene to scene
Set transition speed with a slider

Media management
Use the disk gauge to determine the amount of hard disk space available for video clips.
Discard unwanted clips in the Trash to save disk space.
