Content Providers: Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a signed iTunes artist or label?

Apply here. Once you complete the iTunes Store online application, you will receive an email acknowledging receipt of your application and instructions on how to proceed.

How long does the application process take?

We review each application and respond as quickly as possible. This process can take several weeks.

How do I check on the status of my application?

Once we have reviewed the application, we'll send you an email notifying you of your application status.

If my application is accepted, in what countries will my music be available?

iTunes artists and labels have the option to request contracts for all regions in which the iTunes Store sells content. Once a contract for a specific region has been executed, any content that has been delivered to us with Territory Rights in that region will automatically be available for sale in the region.

Once I am a signed iTunes content provider, how do I get my royalty reports?

Go to the following website and log in using your Apple ID and password: http://www.apple.com/itunes/go/labelconnect/. Then click the Royalty Reports link. Your reports should be available on the website. You'll see a list of monthly reports. The reports can be downloaded to your computer. Note that only designated royalty accounts have access to the Royalty Reports page. Questions about royalty reports should be directed to itmsroyalty@apple.com.

What is Label Connect?

Label Connect is an extranet that provides iTunes content providers with access to iTunes Producer (our proprietary encoding software), discounted hardware, royalty reports, and tools to help you manage your content on the iTunes Store. Log in here.

Why should I become an iTunes content provider?

As a signed iTunes content provider, you’ll be able to take advantage of the following tools and programs:

iTunes Producer: iTunes Producer is a free software application that allows you to prepare your music for submission to iTunes. Use it to encode your music into AAC format; enter album, song, and artwork information; and send your prepared files directly to Apple for consideration.

Downloadable royalty reports: The iTunes Label Connect website allows royalty accountants of independent record labels in the U.S. and Canada to download their monthly royalty reports. The royalty report lists sales of content on the iTunes Store for the given month. A new report is uploaded to the site at the end of each month. An automated email is delivered to the royalty accountant when the report is ready for download. Reports for the last 12 months are available on the site.

Apple discounts: You're entitled to discounts on Mac computers and iPod players. Log in to iTunes Label Connect to purchase discounted Apple hardware.

Music featured on the iTunes Store: After your content is available on the iTunes Store, the iTunes editorial staff may feature your title.* Before its scheduled release, ask your label or distributor to send a listening copy to the iTunes editorial staff:

When your music is added to iTunes, it may be considered for inclusion on demo computers and in-store play at more than 250 Apple Retail Store locations worldwide. You may also be considered for an Artist iMix and Celebrity Playlist.

* Editorial placement is solely at the discretion of the iTunes editorial staff and is not guaranteed.
