Modern programs exchange information via the Internet standard MIME. With this protocol, mail passes smoothly from Mac to PC and back again. Mac OS X includes Apple’s email program, called Mail, which offers rich text, easy setup and filters, as well as an Address Book that lets you keep all of the contact information for friends, family and colleagues in one place.

You can also use Eudora, Netscape Communicator or the Microsoft Entourage program included with Mac Office. Webmail systems such as Hotmail, AOL Mail and Yahoo! Mail function as expected on a Mac, too. If you’re using a corporate email system, you can configure your email client to use standard LDAP directory services.

Also, Mac OS X lets you save files in the Adobe Acrobat format, so your friends don’t even need the software you use to read the documents you create. If you need to compress files before sending, you can use DropZip to send your friends a file in the format they understand. And if you accidentally give them files in the Mac’s StuffIt (.sit) format, tell them they can expand the file on the PC with StuffIt Expander for Windows.
