    Perfect!

I purchased it at the online Apple Store and it was delivered in one day. Free shipping. The packaging was great. The box was encased in a layer of foam. I plugged it into my MacBook Pro Retina 2015 and the DVD automatically mounted. It's a tad noisy but I stopped hearing the hum. It all just worked.

I was going to buy it on Amazon for $2 less, then I read an Amazon review stating that the drives sold on Amazon weren't genuine Apple SuperDrives, so I went back to Apple.com.

I was able to get all my pre-sales questions answered by chatting with Apple. That interface too was very Apple-like. Simple, nice to look at and easy to use.

I'm glad I spent the extra bucks to get a genuine Apple product and encourage you to do so if you have a new SSD Macbook.

    Great little unit!!

Just purchased this little unit. I am more than pleased. I had one disc not import and get stuck in the machine. Not difficult at all getting it to eject (just did a "force eject"). It was the disc's fault not the unit. I have imported about 26 CD's with out a problem, in fact I am importing as I write this review.Highly recommend!

Six months and counting, works great!

So far, it's a really great device for my needs.

Burns DVD-Rs quickly and easily, matches my MBP, and doesn't give me any trouble. Mac simple, A+

Beautifully Packaged, Quality Feel, Works On Every Disc I have Used So Far
May be Double The Price Of Other External Drives But IT WORKS
I wasted too much time with the cheap ones

    Love it!!

To all of the "expert complainers" out there....if you want to watch blue-ray, use your blue-ray player and your TV. This product is about convenience and that's what it delivers. If you put a scratched up, DVD, or CD in, don't expect forgiveness from the drive for your lack of care for your discs. If you want to watch while you're in bed, then get a portable DVD player to watch whatever it is you need to watch.

I paid $79 for mine when I purchased my Mac.I bought it for the times I am away from home, be it traveling, or whatever. I bought it for the convenience. If it quits working, I'll take it to the Apple Store and take care of the problem. What I WON'T do is gripe and moan in a product review and cry like a spoiled baby. Some of these people writing these reviews wouldn't be happy with ANYTHING other than being UNHAPPY.

    A Life saver!

My boyfriend recently got me this for christmas and i absolutely love it! I don't understand what all the other reviews are talking about, it's fast, the disc ejects easily, AND music could be synced to the iTunes. Overall a really good product and would recommend to others.

    Nice Drive

This little unit is great! It works as good as the drives that used to be in the Macs before they dropped them. It's quiet, easy to use, basically a plug and play system with the Mac. I have El Capitan and it works like it belongs there.

Don't know what all the complainers are talking about. I've had none of the problems they're referring to. I've been downloading my CDs and playing movies on it and it's just doing it's job. Love it.

    Good product, minor (ejection) flaw

The Apple USB SuperDrive works as intended. It can read all kinds of CDs, DVDs, DVD movies etc. It also acts as a CD/DVD burner. After months of using one, I finally can give this review. It works well enough, but has one minor flaw. It seems that certain CD discs have a hard time being "ejected" by the drive. It may possibly depend on the brand of disc media being used, I think. My theory is that the mechanical power of the drive might not be strong enough to force CD discs out all the time. This makes sense since this SuperDrive is just powered by the tiny USB cabled power coming from your Mac. The drive itself does NOT have any internal power supply.

The workaround is simple. Just use gravity, pick up your SuperDrive and tilt the front end (the one with the slot) facing 45 degrees downward, and then try ejecting the disc. With the help of gravity, you are helping the drive to "spit out" the disk. Just make sure your ejected disc doesn't go falling down onto the floor.

Maybe a future firmware can be issued to help with this problem? Anyways, that's the only thing close to a "flaw" on this external drive. Otherwise it works as it was intended.

    Wonderful for $49 and attractive!

I've had this thing for 3 years + and I've never had an issue, it's plugged into my Thunderbolt monitor. I'm copying a disc right now to iTunes and of course it's working great. I've burned a lot of movies and never an issue works perfect. No issues operating the thing, it spits out DVD's and CDs when I ask it to, never before or mysteriously. I'm really surprised hearing all the negative reviews on this. I didn't have to get one with what I have, but I felt that my computer would not be complete without a disc drive. Plus it's quite attractive as well.

    Would Recommend

I bought this drive with a new macbook pro mid/late-2014. I have not had any problems with it but if I had, apple has been extremely helpful with solving any issues on my other devices when I bring them in. It doesn't claim to read or write blu-ray so I have never had an issue with expecting it to. As for any humming noises, I have heard some but they tend to be relatively quiet (considering it is an external disk reader). I would recommend this if you need it to install software from a disk or to burn CDs or DVDs. It does the job as described and has held up with moderate use. It is small and portable for laptops but if you are looking for something to just watch dvd's on your computer, there are other products that do the same job and cost far less. Overall, I am happy with my purchase and the quality of this product.

    Reliable and efficient

I have just finished putting all my audio cd's onto my iMac using this drive. It was a mammoth task the drive has had the best part of a 1000 cd's put through it with no jamming or issues with the drive and only 1 crash from iTunes. I have read the reviews and people have said it is slow and can jam but after processing that volume of CDs in a space of a week I can only compliment it on its efficiency and its value.

    We love our Superdrive!

It's so small and it just works - so we love ours.
We knew a superdrive was being excluded from all new iMacs so spent just a little more on one of these and it's been great!
It reads discs that we knew to be unreadable by other drives. How about that!
It's good and tiny and useful and is part of our Mac. Plus if it goes wrong (which it never has and we've used and used it for quite a while now), we know we can just unplug it, recycle it and plug in a new one at a very reasonable cost.
Thank you Apple - this has been a good product for us. Seriously good value.

Have owned for 3 years, no issues with my iMac 27

Works as advertised, have owned for 3 years. I've burned hundreds of CDs and DVDs and played many, many more. Usually, if there is an issue, it's with the application I'm using and not with the device itself.

You won't find a more stable and solid external USB CD/DVD player/writer in this price range.

    usb super drive

The usb super drive for me works great. For the people that don't know how to use it need to figure it out, its not that hard. And if your DVD gets stuck in it then go to the Apple Store and they take it out and if you want a refund I'm pretty sure that they will give you one. Over all This super drive works really well.

Most Simplest Plug and Play Device

After reading the mixed reviews, I still decided to purchase this for my business needs. Can I tell you how awesome this is!? Plug it in, imac reads it instantly, and accepts installation cd's on a dime. To eject, just drop the CD icon in the trash. Bang!!! I was a PC user before and no doubt it would have taken longer to install such things (would have first detected new device and then would have wanted to install it). I am happy with the device in short! Get it, it wont play blue ray and scratch CDs from reading negative comments but thats like any dvd player. I look forward to burning my back up client photographs and such with this. I also love the slim design and yeah, the cord (USB) maybe a bit short but still reaches my imac ports at the back with the superdrive sitting on my desk.

    Enjoy!
