    Pretty Good

    • Written by from Medford

First of all, this installed pretty quick, compared to Leopard's installation. Overall, Snow Leopard is pretty good. It has many features after updating to version 10.6.8.
It is much, much faster than Leopard. Best OS I've ever used.

Problem may not be Snow Leopard

    • Written by from Westfield

I recently experienced many of the problems with my MacBook described in the reviews above. After experiencing numerous freezes and system shut-downs in the middle of a project I finally had to totally erase and reformat my hard drive. Fortunately I was able to save everything prior to going to this extreme. I then reinstalled Snow Leopard and everything worked fine. Then I re-installed MicroSoft Office 2011 for Mac and my computer again started freezing and shutting down. So I trashed Office 2011 and reinstalled Office 2008 for Mac (which I had run prior to purchasing Office 2011) and I now have no problems whatsoever. At least for me the problem was Office 2011 - not Apple or Snow Leopard.

Works great, like any other Apple product I've owned

    • Written by from Ventura

I have been using Apple since 1992 profressionally, performing reinstalls, maintenance and networking, and being a graphic designer as well. The problems I have with them are few and far between, including printers, cameras, 3rd party hardware and software.

For 10.6.x: I love it. I run a MacBook Pro i7 15" and the OS screams. I have an iPhone, Cintiq 12WR and external drive for back-up, and an older HP all-in-one printer. I have no problems, the OS is seamless as, or more than, any other OS I've had and I recommmend it to anyone.

I always suggest a back-up and restore to a fresh install, as any professional. That is the best way to do it.

I only give 4 stars because there should always be room for improvement. For instance, give me more access to removing Control Panel items.. all in all, I love this OS. Period.

Problematic Install Took Hours but All's Well That Ends Well

    • Written by from Annapolis

I needed to upgrade to Lion in order to take advantage of iCloud, and to enable syncing between MBP, iPhone, and new iPad2. Based on many of the negative reviews, I decided to defer installing the upgrade until a weekend when I had hours available for troubleshooting. I am glad I proceeded with caution. It was not my usual, easy-to-use, apple product experience.

I encountered issues with the App Store, which would not log me in. It would just hang. I had to sign into iTunes first, then the App store second, before the software download process would start.

The download and install process took 90 minutes over a fast Verizon FIOS connection. Not bad.

Once I started to use Lion, computer response was slow. Just getting the expected response to any click was taking 3 to 10 seconds. This was very concerning because of some very negative reviews I read, reporting similar poor performance after the upgrade. But I was able to fix it thanks to articles on the discussion forums titled: "SyncServer constantly using high CPU, causing fans to run"

After the one time pain of troubleshooting, my computer is working better and faster than before. And the new features in Lion are very interesting, groundbreaking and intuitive. iCloud syncing is amazingly powerful, Facetime is fun, and there is so much more to explore.

It took me about 7 hours of work to install and troubleshoot, so it was nothing like the usual instant gratification I am used to with Apple products. But in the end, I am very happy with Lion. It was worth it for me.

    Tiger to Snow Leopard Success!

    • Written by from Alexandria

I finally decided to give a straight upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard a shot and low and behold it worked! So if you are working with a computer from 2007 or earlier that meets the basic hardware requirements I recommend buying this OS. All I had to do was pop the CD in ( after backing up my files to be safe) and it upgrade really easily.
Haven't gone to Lion yet, it sounds like it may have some issues so I may wait a bit.

Upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard

    • Written by from Agassiz

I wanted to upgrade in order to use a magic mouse which will not work with Leopard. Thanks to the help I received in the support group, I installed more memory in my iMac then installed Snow Leopard. It was easy and painless. Everything works just great and so far I am very happy with this operating system.

    • Written by from bishop

I actually wasn't going to buy this because I read reviews saying that it made peoples macs beachball and run slow. I upgraded to get the app store for OSX Lion next month. I haven't had any problems, it really runs the same to me as Leopard, I have 4gb RAM, Core 2 duo. So, I would recommend.

    Other Reviews MUST be crazy

    • Written by from Melrose

I don't know what all you people with the bad reviews are doing wrong...but OS X 10.6 installed without any issues at all on my iMac. It was all quite seamless.
    Is it better?...who knows !
The important thing, from my point of view, is that I installed the new OS, there were NO issues with anything else on my computer and I am able to do what I need to do while being up to date with the most current system.
Honestly its what I expect from Apple.
I give it 4 stars because it all went so well...not 5, because I'm not really sure it made any significant difference...but sometimes all the changes that make something better do have to be in your face and all flashy.

    Upgrade to snow Leopard

    • Written by from San Diego

Upgraded a 2008 MBP and a 2009 MB to Snow Leopard AND ran SW update twice on both. Other than the AOL app on the 2008 MBP not working, everything else is fine, processor speed, programs booting up quickly and shutting down properly, etc.

    No real problems here...

    • Written by from Chico

I have the 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2008 Macbook Pro. I took a risk and bought this update, and I have to say, I have not had much trouble with it at all for months now. I haven't run into any incompatibility problems with Logic Studio, with any of my video conversion programs, no crashes, and I don't know what the complaints were all about with people losing all their photos and stuff. I don't see any missing. Everything also stayed right on my desktop exactly how I left it from Leopard.

What's more, the APP Store option is now there, and FaceTime, which are amazing, and great additions to my Mac experience. And whatever happened, lots more GIGs of memory has been freed up on my Mac's harddrive.

I will say one thing, however, that disturbed me. It seems to have deleted my songs in Logic Studio. I of course used Time Machine, and my other external harddrive as well to back up my songs before the update...... but still, I don't know why that happened.

I say this update is really great, but be sure to back up everything with Time Machine just in case, and there shouldn't be anything to worry about. The risk is actually far lower than some people let you on to believe.

    Best OS available today.

    • Written by from san jose

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is the best os in the market. I have tried Windows 7 and Ubuntu. But None of them are even nearly as good as Mac OS 10.6. It works seamlessly. I shut down my computer every 10 days; regardless of how long it has been running, I never find it sluggish or slowing down. The only thing I miss from windows 7 is aero snap windows organizer. It makes life so much easier when you have large screen. But the app called cinch in the app store fulfilled my needs. Backup was never so easy. I have an external hard drive. Every few days I just connect it to my computer, and in a few seconds, time machine identifies the harddrive and does the bakup automatically. No schedule task no nothing. I dont have to click a single button.

    Great Upgrade!

    • Written by from Oakville

I was hesitant to go to 10.6 because of all the negiative reviews. However, I wanted to upgrade some software and this required the new OSX.

I bit the bullet and got it today. Installed in less than an hour and so far it's been pretty great! The only problems i've seen thus far are: I tried to tether my iPhone and the screen went all funny. While browsing the Mac App Store the screen went black.

It was very weird but short lived. My iMac is much more responsive, love the space I got back on the HD, and overall I am quite impressed.

    Don't get all the complaints.

    Great software terrible disc quality

    • Written by from London

I would have given this 5 stars as once I finally got the installer to run it went without a hitch, not a single piece of my old software failed to work (I was going from Leopard)

BUT why on earth are the installer disc's so bad? I had the dreaded "your disc is dirty or scratched" error on a perfect disc and so got a replacement from Apple, again perfect condition but still no joy. On looking on Google it would appear this is a very common problem with certain dvd drives and the faulty batch of discs. (My drive is fine with all other DVD's)

In the end I had to do a remote install from my laptop's drive which inexplicably worked flawlessly if very slowly.

Come on Apple not up to your usual standard.

    Asked a lot of questions

    • Written by from DOWNINGTOWN

I own a small business and needed to install Quickbooks '11, quickly found out that you need Snow Leopard to do it. Started reading reviews on SL and really got spooked at all the negative reviews. So I asked a lot of questions online, and with multiple genius staff members, and eventually with the Mac Business Team. I found out that most of the people experiencing problems was due to just buying the upgrade and not the Mac Box set. Seems there is an update that is skipped if you just go straight to the upgrade and not first install the basic version included in the Mac Box Set.

So that is what I did and I have not had one issue.

Now for Snow Leopard itself its not a drastic change, A little slicker looking and running slightly more efficient than Tiger. So far so good.

I'll go back and give it five stars if I don't have any issues in a few weeks.
