Completely overpriced for the lack of quality

Like many other people it seems i have also had numerous mac chargers die on me. £65 is awfully expensive for a chargers, especially one that has this many problems.

    Apple over-engineering at its worst

    • Written by from Marina Del Rey

I have bought 5 of these in my lifetime, only 2 are still safely operating. They don't stand up to normal life usage. There is a computer inside this power supply that adjusts the voltage upwards to increase the power output when it detects certain models of Apple of laptop and downwards for others. Looks to be about 16V-18V adjustment range. This is just stupid. Make a fixed output supply (like every other device maker on the planet) and sell it for $15 (like every other device maker). It would actually work, be easy to replace in remote parts of the world (if you happen to be on vacation or work trip), and withstand normal wear-and-tear. We've all already bought the computer, do you have to gouge us here too?

    Time for a design change

    • Written by from Redmond

Its obvious this Apple product is not up to standard. So many negative reviews can't be wrong. The whole thing defeats the point of a notebook because its too heavy, runs too hot, its too big & the cable & winder clips poor quality.

Come on Apple - change it.

These things are a toss up...

    • Written by from Fresno

Like many Apple accessories, you just aren't sure how long it is going to last. Some accessories Apple has come out with have lasted me ages! These power adapters are a tad trickier, owning a few Macbook Pro series for at least 2 years each span, I've realized nearly all have the same power adapter issues. The ends get light yellow/orange due to potential heating issues and that the cable is pretty frail, similar to the iPhone lightening cable. Mine personally had torn easily within a year period under normal use and was showing signs of "burns" on the ends. I would say expect to change your charger every 1-2 years, but beyond the quality issue, these things definitely do the job. You plug it in and it works!

    Bad product

    • Written by from Los Angeles

My Macbook Pro is five years old. I have just bought my FOURTH charger. The rubber sheathing on the other three frayed until wires were left exposed, leaving the product a fire hazard.

    HORRIBLE quality.

    A necessary evil

    • Written by from Henderson

While this is probably the only viable option for a charger, Apple has done a really terrible job with this one. The cord near the end that gets plugged into the computer is unbelievably weak. I am very gentle with these cables and have frayed two of them so far. The exposed metal means there is a risk of shock if your cable ever gets to this state (and with any normal use, it will).

Also, because the cable extends perpendicular to the natural angle it should (as opposed to the much better design of the previous adapters where the cable just goes straight to the back of the laptop) you are forced to bend the cable under most scenarios. It's almost as if Apple wanted them to break with normal use.

Adaptor is a danger to my family

    • Written by from KENOSHA

So I am on my second charger in two years and am preparing to buy a third one. The first one overheated to the point of melting the wire. On the second one, it still heats up a lot and the wire has deteriorated at the connections on the adaptor side as well as the magnetic connection side. I have put electric tape on both ends but now it is starting to spark when connected to laptop. With the amount that my Macbook Pro cost, I would think that there would be a lifetime guarantee. Thank goodness that the first one went out before the first year warrantee was up. Please Apple, make a connector that lasts as long as the laptop.

    Very disappointing.

    • Written by from Derry

I bought my Macbook pro 13 inch retina display late august and today the charger cable split which revealed the inner wiring giving me a couple of shocks. It still charges the macbook but I'm not sure how safe it is given the exposure of the wires. The price is ridiculous considering how poor it seems to be. This is evident in all the other complaints on this forum, sort it out Apple.

    Does Not Last

    • Written by from Frankfort

After about 2 years of use, the cord broke. At the point where the thin part attaches to the box, the rubber part ripped and the inside frayed. It works sometimes at very odd angles, but usually not at all. Problems began after the first year; the charge would be spotty, coming in and out. For costing $79.00, this is a horrible product. I did not expect to have to replace my charger so soon.

Unfortunately, there isn't really a choice, but I've had bad luck with the MagSafe2 interface. I have had 2 of the little adapters that allow you to use a MagSafe1 power adapter on a newer MagSafe2 Mac. Each went out in about 6 months of use. They just become very picky about exactly how they are oriented in the MagSafe 2 port on the Mac, and eventually, no matter how you start wiggling them, they don't charge your Mac.

Now, my MagSafe2 adapter itself is flaky, and will intermittently not charge the computer. The cord itself is not damaged. It just gets so you have to align it just right in the port. Sometimes it charges, sometimes not.

I know it isn't my Mac, because you switch to a different power cord, and it works 100% of the time.

Something about the MagSafe magnetic connector goes bad. Whether it is corrosion, or little aluminum particles, or what I don't know. I have tried cleaning both the adapter and the port with alcohol-based wipes and compressed air.

    Longevity Issues

    • Written by from Clovis

I'm willing to spend the extra money on Apple products because they are usually high quality items with beautiful design. This charger has not lived up to the standards I'm used to with this company. The sheathing was super thin and allowed for frayed wires to hang out. I would expect for this product to last more than 2 years as all of my other Apple products have (including earbuds and usb cables). Will have to purchase another even though I don't want to spend the money on a flawed product.

    • Written by from Olney

no idea why so many negative reviews. I've got 2 (home & work) both vintage 2014, and they're fine.
I wish the mag connector was stronger, tho. My biggest risk for disconnection comes from knocking the transformer over.

    Rubber sheathing comes off

    • Written by from La Crescent

The rubber sheathing around the smaller diameter cord is deteriorating and coming off. It is like some alien micro-organism is eating away at the rubber sheathing exposing wire shield around the cord. I fear it may only be time before nearly instantaneous disseminated intravascular coagulation sets in... or it could be horribly bad QA on the part of Apple on the material used as this is the second adapter I have had problems with.

I have to drop money on a new one every few months

    • Written by from Concord

It's not that they don't stay in, or that they stay in when they shouldn't. It's that they fray. They always fray. I wrap electrical tape, but it only lasts so long. Really, it may even last longer than the original sheathing. And it's awfully expensive to be so predictably lousy!

    What a piece of junk!!!

    • Written by from San Jose

Why the heck did you change the design Apple? The magsafe 1 was such an innovative and perfect design. Just redesigning for the sake of it makes no sense. This new magsafe 2 keeps coming off the laptop with the slightest pull... and really. Why the f&^* do we need a new charger. Now I can't borrow my friends and vice versa. Ridiculous. Do I have to give it one star?

    cable and design totally stinks

    • Written by from rio rancho

Apple must have some motivation why they lead in innovation and design on all fronts except the charger of their macs. Makes zero sense. I'm on my 2nd cord due to rubber splitting and wires fracturing.
The magnet connector is just poorly designed. Only able to charge if mac is left alone flat on a table. I'd like to see tim cook keep the charger connected while seated at an airport waiting to board a flight..heck even just sitting on the couch. I love apple but this charging fail is pure garbage. They know millions of customers have this problem everyday but they ignore it but release a larger iPad I assume 4 or 5 guys who work at Pixar care about.

    broken cable...

    • Written by from QuerĂ©taro

After only a year of normal use, the protective rubber of the cable broke, exposing the wires and quickly screwing up the charger... This charger, and many chargers Apple makes, slam right in the face of their quality values.

i'm on my third one in 3 years

    • Written by from Watford

The first lasted nearly 2 years and the the cable out the brick started to go... it had a good innings but I was insulted by the price when I had to stump up for a new one.

The second... well I made sure I was going to look after this. 5 months in it just stopped working... i pulled it out the wall socket... tested the socket.... all good... I switched to the extended wire plug bit and slide that on... BANG the fuse went straight away with a big spark from inside the brick.... So thats 2x fuses gone and no damage to the exterior of the product. Must be poor quality wiring inside.

I'm going to return the product and insist they have it sent to be inspected. I expect more for a product of this price.

    Bad adapter

    • Written by from Fairfax

The first adapter that damaged before the lifetime of the computer. This is my first and probably my last APPLE product. The computer is good, but after the quality of this adapter I do not have many expectations for its lifetime. Same problem as the most of the readers, the thin cable damaged at the extremities and stop working.
