Do I need software to protect my macbook pro against malware on the internet and will some antivirus software tamper with existing security on OS X?

I am thinking about downloading Constant Guard- a Norton antivirus package included with my Infinity cable service. I was reading the agreement and became concerned that the software could hurt/tamper with/remove existing safeguards built into my Macbook operating system. Is this a valid concern?

If I keep my OS X software up to date- am I protected from Malware, etc or is antivirus software recommended? Thanks.
