Which Mac OS X are you currently using?

If your Mac is running OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) or later, you will have the App Store app on your Mac.

Through the App Store app you can download and install the most recent OS 10.11 (El Capitan) (as long as your Mac is supported by OS 10.11).

If you wish to have OS 10.7 (Lion) or OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion), go to the online Apple Store and purchase a redemption code that will allow you to download and install that OS through the App Store app. (Do an internet search for "Apple Store Lion 10.7" or "Apple Store Mountain Lion 10.8").

If you wish to have OS 10.9 (Mavericks) or OS 10.10 (Yosemite), be advised that those versions are no longer available (unless previously downloaded on an Apple ID account). Any Mac that can run OS 10.9 or OS 10.10 can also run OS 10.11.

NOTE: if your Mac is older than 2009 and running OS 10.5.8 or earlier, and it has an Intel Processor (not PowerPC), you can purchase the Snow Leopard install DVD from the online Apple Store, install and update to 10.6.8 to get the App Store app, and then upgrade to whichever OS X supports your Mac. If you have a PowerPC processor . . . the furthest you can upgrade is OS 10.5.8 if your Mac is supported by OS 10.5.8.
