  • Answer to second part. The $29 Snow Leopard is the full system (without iLife or iWorks), not an upgrade. Apple ads may use the term "upgrade to Snow Leopard" in their marketing, but you do not need a previous OS to install. The packaging simply states that Snow Leopard needs "Intel Mac, 1 GB Ram, DVD, 5 GB of available disk space". You can install over Leopard, over Tiger, or over a freshly formatted hard drive/partition.

    Answer to first part. I think the Apple License limits installation of Snow Leopard to Apple-branded computers only. It does not permit installation on Intel PCs. Also, each license of Snow Leopard may be installed on only one computer.
