Everything is dependant on your needs.

Personally, I have one of the mid-2011 iMac's with a 2.93GHz Quad-Core i7 Processor, 16GB RAM and a 1TB ATA + 256GB SSD for around £3,000. The iMac is an all-in-one computer, meaning you don't have to buy any extra peripherals (keyboard or mice) or a display (because it is all-in-one).

I've had my iMac for well over a year, and it shows no sign of slowing down. The RAM upgrade and the fast processor were a good purchase. I definitely recommend sourcing RAM modules from elsewhere, however (Crucial are a good website with cheap RAM for all Apple products).

On the other hand, the Mac Pro is for people who want serious power from their computers. If you need more than a four core processor, more than 16GB of RAM (which is unlikely), then you'd want to go for the Pro. Bare in mind that all you get is a tower. You'll have to buy a separate display, keyboard and mouse.

If money is no object to you, then get the Mac Pro for all round better performance. However, for a price generally cheaper than the Mac Pro, you can still get a fantastic computer (granted, you can't extend the computer as much as a Pro) with everything in it.
