    My wallet rinsed by Apple

So the adapter that came with my MBP finally gave in after three years. Three years! After an infuriatingly parting with £65 for a plug at the Kingston Apple store, the new one that came out of the box seemed even more poorly made than my original. I am currently looking after the store receipt like a winning lottery ticket. Compared with my 6 year old Lenovo's adaptor - which has still literally ZERO wear despite being utilized across three continents - this thing is pathetic.

You know what power adaptor of mine also works? The one to my MEGADRIVE. Yep, I bought the good ol' Sega Megadrive years ago - second hand. This thing was abused! Chucked into the bottom of my backpack everyday after school to go round my mates and play Olympic Gold, with not so much as a velcro cord wrap for comfort. It survived parties, being tripped over, ripped out, coke spilt on it. It still works TWENTY YEARS LATER.

So well done Apple. You've sold me a £65 version of something 8 times as worse as something I bought second hand twenty years ago.

    Amateurs.

Probably the worst charger I have ever used.

I have owned my Mac Book Retina for 14 months and I am on my 3rd charger. The design and build quality leave a lot to be desired. They break so easily and are very temperamental when they do work. Are there any 3rd party options out there, as I would like to try them out.

What a crock of *expletive deleted* - lots of stars rating

I have just got out of the first year of owning my MacBook Pro (by 4 days) and over this time the heat generated by the adapter has alarmed me but as I was busy typing away at a Uni assignment, I smelled burning and was confused as to where it was coming from. After some searching around the room, I looked down to see my carpet melting and small flames beginning to lick around the cable where it enters the adapter body. Having read down these reviews just to see if I am getting the right adapter replacement, it seems that I will be paying for another very soon. I want to go and tare Apple a new one over this as had I not seen the start of this fire (say I were elsewhere in the house) it could have ended up in a disaster. Absolutely shocking. These should be recalled.

    Another Voice in the Wilderness

This is my third power adapter. Designed to fail, frustrate and milk revenue from otherwise satisfied customers. Please explain we cannot hear you.

Can I give it 0 stars?

1 star for magsafe. That's great
-100 stars because everyone in the company has these and they all break within 2 years - not the power supply - the cable where it connects to the power pack.

Obviously Apple is doing a great trade in selling these - but come on - this is ridiculous, un-environmental and cheap. Apple - you are leaving customers feeling ripped off

    Can't give it zero stars?

Seriously, everyone knows the issue by now. The small cord (the one you can't replace independently) is garbage. It will fray at either the power supply end or the Magsafe end. I have gone through many of the adapters, and also repaired most of them several times until I finally ran out of room to solder on to (I am a former electronics technician).

Total nonsense. Either make the small cord detachable and sold on its own, or get a better design.

Time to buy ANOTHER one! Ugh!

So I don't understand why the issue of frayed charger cords still hasn't been resolved. I've owned Windows laptops in the past that have NEVER had a charging issue - in fact I was able to use HP chargers longer than the laptop with the replacement HP laptop. Its like HP put more engineering into their chargers than the laptop itself and Apple is just using cheap chargers as a cash box.

I loved the idea of a previous review who recommended a magsafe connector on both the brick and laptop so the cheap cord can be disconnected after each use and replaced when worn out. That's an easy fix! I'd even pay more for it if I knew it would last longer and cost less to service over time!

    Shame on Apple

Oh Come on!!!! i Gave it 1 star because there is no option for no star.
Apple is someone reading the thousands of negative reviews on this product? It is a real stain on your entire business. If this product is so inferior at least make it cheaper. I love my mac so im locked in, i have to get one of these pieces of C. if i could shop elsewhere i would.

    This charger isn't that great.

    C'mon Apple, fix this!!!

I have owned several MacBook Pro computers. I buy a new cord every 6 months... I'm sick of this. Mine have frayed, broken off, shorted out, etc. C'mon Apple FIX IT!

    Bad Apple, Bad

This is the 4th ridiculously over priced power brick I have had to BUY, which means this is my 5th power supply. You should be ashamed of yourself for not:

    (a) designing a reliable power supply that lasts at least throughout the lifetime of the over priced computer, and;

    (b) selling the cord between the power brick and the computer separately AND at a sensible price.

    Completely Rediculous

Last apple product I buy, this stupid cable giving way for the second time this semester is now getting in the way of my writing my assignments for uni, I cant afford a new one due to being a student ... I warn anyone who is thinking of getting a mac product, to NOT DO IT unless they fix this simple problem ! I am Very Angry at Apples lack of consumer consideration and production of substandard Products !

Replaced 5 times. This item has a definite design flaw.

I am always very careful with these power adapters. It does dot seem to make any difference. The skinny cord invariably frays at its connection to the "brick". This is clearly a flawed design. This should not be happening. Apple should make the necessary improvements to this item and provide replacements gratis to those who have had this poorly designed adapter. The bricks also tend to get VERY hot. I have one friend who watched in horror as the skinny cord on hers melted its insulation like the fuse on a stick of dynamite. I have now had FIVE of these cords with the same DEFECT.

The cord is really a disaster

As the cord of my previous adapter frayed terribly, I have been using my current one very carefully.
    However, it still frayed.
    It's just garbage.

Apple, GIVE ME A QUALIFIED ADAPTER!

    Rubbish

These have to be replaced once a year, sometimes after after only a few months as the cable frays at the mag safe end. I'm having to replace it yet again as the latest one has frayed but also come apart and the insides are exposed which makes it a fire hazard. I'm about to buy my 6th one. Spend £2,000 on a laptop and end up spending £45-75 on replacing the power supply every 6 months.

AWFUL and CHEAP Design of Cable - Sleeve falling apart

If I could give a Zero star I would. I've had PC's for 39 years and I've never had a power cord fail like the Apple Power Cord. I love my Macbook Pro 2012 but I'm on my 3rd Power Cord, I've had this latest adaptor for less than a year and the cord casing is falling apart. Now I have to spend another £65 to replace it. This is just a garbage design. The Pound Shop sells better quality than this. I can't believe a Company like Apple a happy to sell this Item. The casing needs to be made of PTFE or Silicon and not CHEAP PVC

    Seriously, Apple?

For a company that makes otherwise great technology, this charger is just complete and utter garbage. I got my last charger a year ago, and it has already frayed through. For the cost, that should not be happening. Was there an alternative seller, I would have quit buying from Apple long ago; however, the knock off brands are just as bad, so here I am for the third time, buying another junk charger from a company that prides itself on quality. I think that the average rating speaks pretty clearly.

Terrible design resulting in a fire risk

The flimsy cord that goes from the adapter to the computer will fail at the adapter end just beyond the protective sleeve every single time. This is obvious to anyone who's had anything to do with travelling regularly with an adapter so why didn't the 'guru' designers at Apple think of it? These adapters are a fire risk.

I wish I could post a negative star rating

This adapter is poorly designed and absolutely unacceptable for sale and use. My 2010 Macbook Pro has been through 3 of these to date - and for the most part, I am only an occasional user (using my laptop max. 3 times a week, about 1-2 hours each time). The first adapter smoked and literally melted at the connection point; upon bringing it to the Genius bar, the staff member was shocked and I got a free replacement. However, when the same issue cropped up again (and then, again) I had to pay $89 each time. With tax, that's a $200 premium on my system. I've got a PC from 2004 with a better adapter. Frankly, I've never had to buy a replacement adapter for any other product - let alone, 3 of them! Last time at the Genius bar, the manager had the audacity to tell me "we're aware, this is an investment you'll need to make. I've had to buy a replacement myself, so so will you." Thanks Apple, my next laptop will be PC. Cheers.

More of the same...this is a poorly designed product

As many others have noted before, this is a poorly designed product that is prone to failure at the cord's junction with the power supply and / or the MagSafe connector. Mine has completely failed and is frayed and showing burn marks on the sheathing, raising safety concerns. I would love it if I could post a photo of it.

For a company that makes such great and well thought out products, it's a shame that they haven't developed a solution to this grossly inadequate and potentially unsafe design. I'm now left with another hunk of e-waste and an $80 cost to replace a product that failed due to a cord that likely costs several cents to Apple's bill of materials.

ARE YOU LISTENING APPLE!? (Yes, I'm shouting.)
