For this price, you'd expect something durable

This adapter that came with my 17-inch MacBook Pro, and it is now useless because the cable frayed by the adapter. After speaking with several other MacBook owners, I found that fraying at this exact spot is extremely common. At $80 a pop, it seems like a racket. I love Apple products, but why can't they make a durable cable?

    Bad and expensive

The 2nd charger broke today. The first one's cable burned, this one just stopped working for no reason within 4 months of buying it. 85$ for a charger that breaks faster than a cheap knock-off, SHAME.

My third adapter after 4 years.

Strangely, my adapters seem to stop working after 2 years. So this is my third adapter. I am a meticulous person and very careful with all my equipment. But the cable broke close to the power adapter who then stopped working. Expensive adapter when you think that it never happened to me with other brands.

    Straight out dangerous

This product is a disgrace to apple. I'm going to need to replace my laptop because I need this charger model for my current mid 2012 16" and sadly it wont be a macbook for me because this charger is a straight out cut my electricity, ruining a render on my desktop computer and is also a general fire hazard. I simply cannot trust apple again after going through 3 of these horrible cables. They are overly expensive, lasts for only a year and are dangerous.

I'm about to buy my fourth one in five years.

This is expensive to replace when it fails every time close to the magnetic connector. The wire coating frays and falls off in pieces and looks terrible. I wouldn't mind replacing this as a part but I have to buy the transformer as well. This one thing degrades my whole Macbook Pro experience since I am looking right at it all the time. It used to be that if Apple got bad reviews on something they would be right on it. That's not true for this expensive replacement. I'm not happy.

Terrible Price for a Bad Charger

Of all the innovations that Apple has come up with (computers that fit in my back pocket, voice recognition software that can understand my drunken requests for cheeseburgers) they still cannot seem to make a charger that can last one year of ordinary "I have a laptop so I bring it and a charger everywhere for work" use. Seriously. I have had to replace my charger twice and my spouse's once! I understand that there is a lot of tech. crammed into the "block" but just pay the Chinese more for a sturdier cable that doesn't fray after a year. I'd really like a response to this, Apple.

    Ridiculous quality

The quality of the cable is ridiculous, I've never had a laptop whose power adapter's cable broke (it's just 2 years old!)! I've only had this problem with iPhone charging cables before. I own another macbook from 2008 whose cable is still in perfect condition, and I have been pretty careless with it... However, I've been very careful with this last one that has just broken! It's like the plastic cover of the cable is rotten or something and starts falling apart. If a customer pays so much for a laptop s/he's also expecting that the power adapter that comes with it lats for as long as the laptop itself, at least! Are you lowering the quality of the materials you use Apple?? If that's the case you could at least warn your customers that they may have to buy 3-5 power adapters during their laptop's lifetime...(note the irony...)

    Cheap junk, apple should replace

I got 2 Macbook pros in 2011, and between them have already gone through 3 of these cables, they fall apart at the ends by themselves. Now it's a fire hazard. Combine that with all my frayed lightning cables and it's a miracle that my house hasn't burned down yet. Thanks Apple. And wow, $79 to replace it.

    1 year later.

I brought my laptop in 2013. In the past 3 years I have brought maybe 2-3 laptop chargers because they have been broken. They last for about a year and I have to spend $80 plus some change on a new charger. Apple needs to invest in the MacBook pro charger. As a student, I do not have the time or the money to invest in a $80 charger every year. It is ridiculous. I currently have to buy a new charger at this moment.

    Disappointed with the product!

I just noticed my MBP power adapter need to be replaced soon enough for the third time. I'm so angry because nowadays especially in Malaysia everything getting expensive. I need to spend almost RM400 to buy a new one for the third time.

Going to have to join the crowd...

...off to replace my MagSafe adapter which has frayed beyond repair - wire to the magsafe adapter's nearly sheared off at the brick now. These things do not last long, and cost a rather silly amount. A new design for this is key.

I'm seriously considering switching from Mac to PC over their flimsy cords.

Warning: If you actually travel to and from work/school with your Macbook Pro, be prepared to buy no less than two of these per year. If you for all intents and purposes keep your power adapter (and by extension, your laptop) confined to your house expect to purchase no less than one of these per year.

As an architecture student, I went with a Mac purely due to allegiance as all the programs I need are primarily PC-based programs meaning I run everything via Parallels or Bootcamp and use the Mac side of things only really for mail, the web, Adobe, and video. If these power adapters aren't fixed in two years when I make my next computer purchase I will switch to PC as I will have had enough.

Ten years should be more than enough time to learn how to make cords that are as long-lasting as your competitors. While I realize you are gaining money by doing this in the short-term, it doesn't take a genius to realize that you're losing customers in the long-term as well. When you're buying such a pricey computer in the first place you expect a certain amount of quality, something your cords, be it power adapters, iPhone chargers, and earbuds seriously lack.

MacBook charger cable is a total liability. Thin, Frail, Unreliable.

The thin cord which connects the computer to the round rectangular piece will fray at the connection to the rectangular box after little more than one year of normal wear and tear usage. Tried to use black electrical tape as a stop gap measure this time, but when the cord is inadvertently moved it will lose power. To make matters worse, my macbook pro needs a battery replacement too, so as soon as the cord has a power interruption, the computer dies and I lose all of my work :(

Should I buy another brand new charger? Should I buy a new battery? Should I buy an entirely brand new computer from apple?

This is my second macbook charger that bit the dust and while I have generally enjoyed good service from apple, there is no reason why I should have to buy 3 chargers for the same computer. I am in the market for a new computer right now and I can assure you that if apple has the same flimsy charger cables when it comes time to purchase, I will be switching back to PC. These thin white charging cords are a theme throughout the apple product line and they are of terrible design and inferior quality. How hard is it to make a cord with more substantial rubber shielding so they don't tear apart?

    Sincerely,
    Nick

    Extortionate Replacement Cost

Extremely disappointed that although I've taken good care of my Mac charger, it will cost me (a student) $130 to replace. Blatant profiteering and designed obsolescence on the part of the cheap and fragile cable.

There is no reason for this to be so expensive.

    Horrible Charger

I have now replaced this charger 3 times for my current computer and three times for the previous MacBook Pro. The magconnection becomes loose and the wires become frayed and break. There has to be a better design. I have had the same problems with my iPhone and iPad connections. Please, PLEASE correct the design.
