    Lasted less than a year

I have two power adapters--one for my wife and me--and my wife's lasted about 10 months. Mine has yet to hit that age so we'll see if it's an isolated incident. Either way, pretty inconvenient and disappointing considering how expensive it is.

    This is NOT acceptable

I have had my MacBook Pro 17" notebook for less than nine months and the AC Adapter/Power cord has died! When I went to see what a new one costs, I discovered that it will cost me over $80 for a new one. This is outrageous! When I pay $79 for a part, I expect it to work and to last. From reading lots of other reviews, I see that this is very common. And, obviously you haven't fixed it yet. I don't appreciate being ripped off and I will now think twice about buying another Apple product.

    I don't get the bad reviews ....

    Hi -

I've had mine for a year and it's fine. In fact, I'm logged on so that I can buy a secon one to take on the road with me.

I would like to heed the warnings but that has not been my experience and I really don't see an alternative.

    Thanks-
    ajd

    Terrible product.

Ceased to work after 14 months - 2 months out of warranty. This is the weak link in an otherwise great laptop package. Unusual and disappointing that Apple hasn't put more effort into the quality of this part. Time for a 3rd party to step up?

    Charger Why U no work?

I study in a course where we got offered macs on discount by the uni, so all my class mates got The MacBook Pro at the same time.

seems like after 18months they all die.

My friend had to replace his just a week ago, now mine is broken too, a lot of my class mates have had the same thing, do make them to fail after a certain time?

    Atrocious!

This is my 2nd power adapter for my MacBook Pro! Fortunately for me it was covered under warranty since my computer is only 4 months old. But how ridiculous is that! 4 months old and poof...dead! This is not the first complaint either. We've gone through 3 different adapters on my husband's MacBook as well! I love Apple products and I would never trade my Pro for a PC, but really....DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE POWER ADAPTERS!!! I There is obviously a quality issue!

Good design, a please to use, but these adaptors fails too often

We have 3 MacBooks in my household (1 13" white 2006 MB, 1 17" 2007 MBP and a 15" late 2008 unibody MBP), and I just ordered my 6th and 7th power adapters for those 3 MacBooks. All the previous power adapters failed except one (for now). The Magsafe design is great, but they fail way too much. I've seen this power supply complaint problem on mac forums for years, it would be great if Apple took seriously care of it.

One Day it Worked, the Next it Did Not

I made a huge switch from the PC and bought a loaded MacBook Pro two years ago for about $2100. Just the other day the power adapter stopped working. It worked fine the day before, it wasn't moved, damaged, or anything and it just stopped working the next day. (I never had power cord issues with a PC even ones that I used for 4-5 years.) Besides not working the power adapter displays all the usual wear and tear that is typical with all of Apple's quickly massproduced chargers: frayed cables and the cords disconecting from the adapter and the connector. (Just like what happened with the poorly designed iPhone chargers). My advice, if you're not going to fix it, license the technology out to companies who will make a more reliable product for a more competitive price.... off to the Apple store to spend $80: Looks like ramen noodles for dinner tonight.

    I hate this power adapter

The adapter is so heavy it constantly falls out of the socket .It gets hot ,which is scary ,and after one year my original is not working. I have to order a new one ,which brought me to these reviews. It's shocking to me that Apple hasn't changed this design when it clearly has problems.
When you pay for one of the highest priced laptops on the market, you expect a better product.

    Awful

The concept is great but the implementation is horrible. First revision was garbage, second revision is still garbage. The connectors can't handle normal use and fray internally. Be prepared for torture with these things.

    yet another frayed cord

My frayed wire burnt straight through the plastic/rubber coating. I tried to be gentle with my charger but it's a little difficult when I need to put it in my backpack to take to school or when traveling. It's about 14 months old... I'm wondering if I can get a replacement for free since my computer is still under warranty.... I really hope Apple fixes this problem, because I think it's unfair to have to buy a new charger every year for $80...considering all of the complaints. If anyone ever finds a solution, let me know.

Great Adapters (take it with a grain of salt)

Yes there are obviously many who have had problems and they will most certainly express them. However I have owned 4 MagSafe adapters (3 x 60W, 1 x 85W) since the original MacBook and have only had one fail. It melted. After contacting Apple they replaced it (it was on AppleCare I believer).
Personally, I think the product is very solid. Regarding heat issues, most adapters get hot so I'm not going to be over-dramatic and say it almost burns you.

It's true that most of the reviews give a poor rating. It's also true that people are more likely to record a complaint than a praise. Take it all with a grain of salt.

    What's the alternative?

I have gone through three of these, all of which I treated very well (never moved from my desk, never tripped over it or yanked it out, etc.). The first lasted 18 months, the second seven months, and this latest only **three** months. For the reviewers who say that all the poor reviews are from people who don't take care of their cords— you're not more careful than the rest of us, just luckier. The only alternative is to not buy another and let my MacBook Pro die. I am incensed!

Dead in less than a month

I bought my laptop a month ago. My power cord no longer works. I'm going to the Apple store tomorrow and I'm hoping they replace it for free, otherwise, much as I love my computer, I'm going to have to return it - based on the reviews, I'm afraid I can't afford to continually buy new power cords for the computer! :( So sad! Dear Apple, please make a power cord that matches the quality of your computers!!

    Great power adapter

Of all the laptop power adapter i have handled this has been the best one. its hard for me to say why so many people have had issues because i have had mine for 2.5 years now and haven't had one problem. maybe i will have one soon due to cable bending from putting it in and taking out of my bag. but overall i have never had any problems.

Power Adapter failed at 9 month mark.

85W MagSafe Power adapter failed after 9 mo's of moderate use. No visible damage, but I suspect it failed at the computer connection because it is the least rigid at this point. MBP was only used around the home and the adapter remained plugged in to the same electrical outlet. Confirmed the adapter had failed at the Apple Store.

    Does Not Last

This is the second charger that I've bought this year, and the third in two years. They never last. The cable shows no signs of damage or fray, but no longer works. On top of that, these cables are expensive. I am a college student who relies on my laptop and I can't always just spend $80 on a charger cable which should last a couple years at least.

    This Apple is Bad!

This is my first time writing a bad review on anything that is Apple. I must say I am very disappointed that after I purchased my Macbook Pro 17 1 year and an half passed and the adapter went bad. So I bought a new one with the new design and guess what it went bad in 7 month. I am the type that really cares for my products I actually wrap the cable properly before storing in my bag. MY CABLE MELTED! Do you know why? It is because it sits next to the power brick and the power brick melted it. Even the apple tech said so. So I have one question. APPLE WHEN are you going to FIX this? You are the cutting edge of technology FIX this. After spending 2500 on my Mac I expect more. Please restore my faith in you product. Please fix this for all of us. I am a video editor I use this for personal and business.

    Simply awful

The cable insulation material is clearly too rigid and cable cracks even after short-term usage. Have been using it for 3 months and it just snapped on its own it was under original hardware warranty but apple refused to replace faulty adapter.

    Terrible experience overall.

    So good I bought two.

I've had two of these (one that lives in my office and one for carrying around) for several years. They take a beating whether at the office or on travel, as I drag my laptop around to run meetings, give lectures and presentations. Never a problem. The MagSafe connector pulls free harmlessly when I trip over the cord (probably at least once a week). The hardware is sturdy. All the connections are reliable and resist corrosion; I've never had to clean the contacts. Both cables (AC and DC) are well built, and more flexible than most of the laptop power cables I've seen. It is also nice when traveling light to leave the AC cord behind and attach the optional flip-out plug.

The only downside is that the plain white brick is not aesthetically appealing.

Tip: don't try to pull the MagSafe straight out, you'll just end up yanking on the cord. Tip gently up or down, and it detaches easily.
