Is there any other options than this terrible adapter ?

I am really fed up with this power adapter. Is there any other way I can work on my laptop ? I bought a MB Pro in Aug 2008 and I changed 5 adapters till now even after taking extreme care. No more apple laptops for me.

    frayed cord

8 months after my last replacement (this is my third) I am buying a new power brick. As it has been documented over and over, It frays and shorts. It is a guaranteed fail. What is up with this? 25 years of owning Apple products (and three different laptops) and this is by far the worst experience ever. Somebody is asleep at the wheel in Cupertino.

I am dying to hear Steve say. "And one more thing ... A power cord that is engineered to last as long as the computer."

Steve, its time to kick some backside in the power supply department.

Why why why the power adapter crushes all of a sudden.

Rather if Apple directs the valid date on the pwr device, I can accept it.
During working very important thing at late night, it was gone. Is App store in SOHO open even in mid night? If it is, I wouldn't be angry right now. What about my job in a hurry? Make it durable please!

Unfortunately agree that this one ruined perfection :(

I thought these new silver tipped MagSafe adapters would be a great idea, but in practice they are awful to use.

The previous white tipped adapters worked perfectly and I loved them. I have never had a problem with fraying as I do not bend the wires back and forth unnecessarily. I use them hard but don't abuse them.

The new adapters are awkward no matter which way you plug them in. The do not come out properly when the cord is jerk in the direction it is most likely to be pulled when it is tripped over. At the very least it spins the laptop around before coming out; whereas the previous one came out without endangering any equipment -- they damage the computer end of the connection when someone really does trip over the wire (happened on my new macbook pro). Also the new all-metal tips more easily scratch and chip paint and glass than the old tips with white plastic housings.

Just a really unfortunate direction for a product I used to love :(

Ridiculously NOT SAFE, change the design or change the name.

I have tested this new L shaped connected every which way and there is only one or two ways that it will actually work to protect you from an accidental chord snag. The old design worked in every which way. Sure it was annoying to have it pop off easily in your lap, but I'd rather have that problem then needing a new laptop because the chord took the computer with it, which is where we are now. Don't buy this, try to find an old one somewhere. These are NOT SAFE. They are just as bad as the old original design, only sleeker looking.

The reality is the new design is better at not coming out as easily, which might have been a complaint to some, but as you can see by the rating on this product more people prefer to have that problem then to have it basically be a traditional chord with a nifty magnetic attachment. It just doesn't break free easily enough to earn the name magSAFE.

NOTE: if you trip over your chord or it gets snagged on you as you turn from your desk, IT WILL TAKE YOUR COMPUTER WITH IT 8/10 TIMES!! especially if you are turning to the right. If the chord is facing toward or away from you when you pull it down and to the right it just pulls the computer right with it.

replacing Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter AGAIN

I find it incredible that I am about to replace this for the second time after less than a year of buying the last one, after the cable leading to the computer has broken off from the transformer in exactly the same place. This is both expensive and environmentally unsound. Please sort this out Apple.

    Ruined Perfection

Apple had it down with the previous magsafe, the new design is terrible. Its aluminum and looks better but in practice it is just not right. You can either have it blocking your Ethernet port or you can have it awkwardly sticking beyond the back of the computer where it will be constantly getting knocked off. This charger was much better when the cord went out from the laptop at a 90 degree angle as opposed to running parallel along the laptop.

    P.S. Fix the fraying!!!!!

Apple does everything right except make chargers.

I just bought a new charger and this new design is horrible. I’m sure there was a good reason for it, but it’s just not practical. I keep a plastic case on my computer so it doesn’t get messed up or dirty. With the case on, I can only plug the charger in one way. And that one way doesn't work if I ever have to plug anything else into my computer, like an Ethernet cable. I wish they would go back to the old design, or make a better one.

Fully compatible with older MacBook Pros

It works fine, and fits exactly the MagSafe power port on my late-2007 15-inch MacBook Pro, even though the computer was originally supplied with a "T" style MagSafe connector. Buy with confidence.

    What is wrong with people?

I've upgraded to every other new MacBook Pro (and previously PowerBook) and I've been using these MagSafe bricks since Apple introduced them. I've never had any problem with them. They DO NOT overheat. The wires have NEVER frayed because it takes a lot less force to disconnect the plug. And there have never been any connection or seating issues except the new L-plug didn't fit with my old case, but I just took a box-cutter and shaved off some of the plastic on the case and it works fine now. I'm sure that there are legitimate failures, but given the number that I have used without incident, I have to conclude that some people are simply extremely rough with their ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT.

Yet another frayed cable, need detachable cables!!

I've had my macbook pro for 1 year. And 6 months in, the cable became so frayed at the magnetic connector that i had to wrap duct tape around it. This jerry-rigged solution worked for a few months, but last night it failed altogether, and the cable is so frayed that there's no hope of a home repair. Unfortunately the cable doesn't disconnect from the adapter for an easy/cheap replacement, I have to buy another SEVENTY NINE DOLLAR adapter just for a stupid cable repair. Come on apple! Please make a detachable cable so it can be a $5 replacement instead. Plus there will be one less perfectly good lithium battery decaying in a landfill.

    power cord shreds AGAIN

I count on Apple for great functional design so the difficulty with the wiring to the magnetic head is frustrating. This is not a new or unknown problem--it has happened to me with other Macbooks, and here I am, once again.

The wiring is vulnerable around the magnetic head. The wiring there takes a lot of twisting and turning, no matter how carefully it is handled. Because I anticipated this problem, I created a special casing for that join, and the power adapter has lasted longer than others. However, it is now almost toast, and I have to get a new one.

My Macbook Pro is great, but the adapter needs the Applebrains to redesign this basic flaw. I agree with the other suggestions that a separate and replaceable wire would make it a lot easier and cheaper to repair. Apple, you're better than this.

    Power Adapter = 2 months

I am having to replace the power adapter after using it for only two months because the cable part near the magnet has apparently gotten kinky.

It started with it sometimes not working, and now there's no way to get it to work.

    Overall I am quite disappointed.

I would love to see a more environmentally friendly and better designed option in the near future.

    Disposable Power adapter basically

Looks like I will be ordering my 3rd power cord for my Macbook Pro as the last 2 have had wires that eventually shorted out. Love the quality Mac products, disappointed in the quality of the power cords. Old edition of Mac laptop, I have had the same problem in the past.

No longer works after 8 months

I love the magnetic plug but after only 8 months, the electrical wires inside the cable have broken and I have to buy a new one. And I mostly leave the plug in the same location. I'm not carrying it around or bending it. I've tried to be careful with it but it broke just the same. I think it needs to be re-engineered because it's a lot to shell out for a replacement.

    works but not safe

I just tripped over the cord and it sent my macbook pro off my desk, onto my chair, then slammed on the floor. Not cool. The older and looser magnetic charger owns.

    2.4 GHz MacBook Black

I needed a new power supply for my 2.4 GHz MacBook Black. The original supply was the old style and I was worried about buying the new style because some reviews said that it wouldn't work. However, it works just fine with my 2.4 GHz MacBook black!

    Needs design tweak

Here I am a year after purchasing my laptop and having to replace the power adapter. I love the magnetic feature but it the end that connects to the block that I have issues with. Currently I have duct tape around it so as to prevent a fire/exposure of inner wires. Why can't this end be attached in a different way that would eliminate / reduce wear? Apple is good about our environment in the design of its hardware, it's time to make this simple change saving our landfills from an abundance of these power adapters.

    Design improvement required

I like the magnet and angle design of the plug. Very cool. I realize the cable needs to be pliant otherwise it would come unplugged every time you fidget with the MBP in your lap. I get it, however, this cable is extremely thin. It's vulnerable. I'm not surprised other people have experienced problems with the cable. My kitten chewed through my cable last night and he's just a tiny little punk, not a big punk like my other cat. I realize it's not Apple's fault about the cat, however, this unit is in perfect working order save for a bite mark on the cable. This is where we need a design upgrade. The cable should plug into the base with a snug connection, that way we can purchase a replacement cable instead of the whole unit in case something happens to only the cable. The current design is like forcing us to throw the baby out with the bathwater. We should be able to keep the adapter and simply replace the cable. From there, it would be nice if we could buy different types of cables, a thicker cable, a different color perhaps. If it were affordable, I would just order a few of them to have on hand in case something happens. Apple, please consider this. It's wasteful and harmful to the environment to have to chuck the whole unit into a landfill just because of a frayed cable.
