I want the old one back!

Recently I lost my charger and had to purchase this newly designed one. I enjoyed the previous chargers better. This new design can block the usb slot if it's not pointing away from you, and sometimes i need it to face the other way. For the first time in the years I've had macbooks, the charger doesn't work all the time. Sometimes my mac just doesn't recognize that there is a charger attached. I wish I could still get old one's. Also, the material that the cord is made out of has much less flexibility. This makes storage harder and when in use, the cord tends not to lay out neatly.

    Number 6

    Two Macbook Pros
    Four replacement adapters
The newer connector is better, but the cord still frays too easily. The between the transformer and the macbook should be replaceable. Or more durable.

    Bought two adapters--one defective

I bought 2 85-watt adapters for the 17" MacBook Pro. One was defective. I called Apple, was routed to tech support and was told it could be fixed by removing the computer battery, pushing the "on" button and holding it down for five seconds, then putting the battery back in and powering up the computer with the adapter plugged in.

It worked. However, only 24 hours have elapsed, and I've just had to repeat the procedure for the third time because the adapter stops working after a few hours. If it goes dead a fourth time, it's going back to the Apple Store.

    I'd give it two-and-a-half stars.

I love these things! They pull out if oyu trip over your cord! I also like them better than the old ones, they don't get in the way as often.

    I have a late 2008 15" unibody macbook pro with a 2.4 Ghz processor (MacBookPro5,1, or MB470LL/A).
This model originally came with a white magsafe adaptor so I was concerned about whether this new silver adaptor would work.

    1) The sales assistant at the Apple Store said it would work.

    2) It appears to work just fine with this computer.

    3) The Q&A forums on this site have both yes and no answers, possibly some folks have communication problems or aren't thinking very hard. I don't think this is a satisfactory way for Apple to provide product information. Any person can answer any question with whatever they THINK is the right answer. On the internet, lots of people are thrilled to share their opinion as fact.

    4) Apple: it's called a product compatibility matrix combined with a solid model number system. Knock it off with the secrets and guessing games!

As for the product itself, the connection is sleeker since the power cable runs straight back, parallel to the side of the computer. This is nice. On the other hand, the cable has a rougher surface texture and is much less flexible. Maybe the old cable was fraying a lot, but now I am concerned about wrapping this new one for travel because it is so stiff.

    Love it

My old cord frayed and it was probably only a year old. This one is designed without the curve where it attaches to the computer, hopefully eliminating that problem. My daughter's old cord has frayed too now (in the same spot, where it curves next to where it attaches to the computer), it appears this fraying is inevitable with the original cord. Hers is not very old either. That being said, the old cord needs to be discontinued and this one sold with the product. I love the option of using a long or short cord that this product allows. I've stayed in hotels where the plugs aren't necessarily within a close range of the seating, but this cord is long enough to tackle that problem nicely. I marked it down one star for price, it is very pricey for a charger / power cord.

    Complete Disappointment

I am usually quite pleased with my Apple products but when it came to buying a new charger for my laptop I found myself quite frustrated. My Macbook Pro is only a few years old but the charger had worn and stopped working. I purchased a new one for full price only to find that it did not fit with the hard case I have on my computer. That didn't seem to matter though given that the charger stopped working for my computer completely just one week later. I thought the new design of the charger would help to prevent the fraying of wires that my old one had had. In the process of not working though, it just ended up blocking one of the USB ports I use. It seems there are still some design issues to resolve, Apple. And from now on, it would be helpful if you made changes that benefitted all of your Macbook types, not just the newest version on the market.

Better than my boxed magsafe adapter.

I own a late 2008 MBP and this is a much better replacement or spare. With the new port adapter design it makes my MBP look better - holds in place better too! I highly recommend it.

I've owned a few MacBooks and MBPs over the last 5 years. My current MBP is a mid-2010 Core i5. I'm not entirely sure what all the bad reviews about the charger are stemming from. I've used the charger for this MBP and the others everyday and never had a problem. Each day, I unplug the charger, wrap the cord around the flip out prongs, tote it to work in a bag, set it all back up at work, take it down at the end of the day, tote it home, and set it back up. I've never had a power adapter or cord issue with any power adaptor in 5 years! I think the people with the bad reviews either: 1) received a lemon that is an exception to the rule, or 2) are abusing the product. I feel my use is above average, but I'm mindful not to yank the cord in all crazy directions. I think you'll like the product so long as you take care of it.

    Apple's biggest MAC failure

The adapter failed after one use. I purchased it after ignoring the plethora of bad reviews hoping it would solve the problem of the original power cord on my 2008 MacBook Pro falling apart in the first year of use. There are countless discussion threads on this problem on numerous websites. Apple needs to stand behind their entire product - you purchase the entire MacBook Pro with the expectation that the laptop and accessories (especially the power cord) will withstand normal wear and tear over at least a several year period.

    What a Ripoff

Apple needs to spend their development dollars on the ENTIRE package they are selling. Its great to get a MacBook Pro until you can't power it up anymore or you buy a new power supply that is newly designed, but doesn't fit with the protective case that Apple also sells. Apple's customers are paying top dollar for product that is not fully thought out nor designed to last. Forcing us to keep buying power supplies that keep breaking or one that will now leave your MAC without a protective cover, is just another way to line Steve Jobs pockets. This is the last MAC I'll ever buy.

works fine with aug 2006 macbook pro

So far so good. Love the new design since I usually plug in to my laptop from the back. I always worried with the older model that the cord would bend too far, near the plug-in point of the laptop and now it's not an issue. I have 3 adaptors, all still working including the original (knocks on wood). They do feel fragile though (I'm pretty careful with them) but the design is beautiful.

Does NOT work with pre-unibody Macbook Pros

Just purchased this as a replacement. It does NOT work with older non-unibody Macbook Pros.

After casing the forums I found most people have this issue and the only way to get it to work is to pop the battery or reset your Power Management Unit.

Also prefer the older style. With this design, it's possible to still pull the computer off a table or chair if the cord gets pulled parallel front or back to the laptop. The old MagSafes wouldn't do this...they'd always disconnect.

    Apple really messed up here.

    Piece of Junk!

We have four laptops and every charger has died. It's either the little prongs inside or the cord frays or the wires short out. They are so overpriced for the quality. Now the new magsafe adaptor won't fit into place because I have a case on my laptop. I have an Incase. Apple sells these cases in the Apple Stores so you would think that the genious who designed the adaptors would consider the depth of these cases. I think Apple is beginning to lose it! We have never owned anything else. In fact we have had every product they have ever invented and in multiples! The past couple of years we have seen nothing but quality issues. $80.00 bucks for the charger, but my laptop will be scratched because I'll have to remove the case. Nice tradeoff Steve Jobs.

    It's ok

I have a MacBoook Pro 2008 and the old charger take two years to broke down. I just bought the new one and it's ok, it works fine. And don't know why some people say that with the old model it does not work, because with mine is good. It seems smaller and that is not going to fit, but when you connect it, it charges.

DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE EARLY (2008) Macbook pro

So I bought this new charger and was excited because it looked sturdier than the last one ( the wires on my old charger were all frayed). After two days the charger stopped working. I went back to the apple store exchanged it and got another new charger. It also stopped working after two days. After searching around on the internet and seeing that many others are having this problem I found the only way to get my charger to work is to take the battery out press the reset button and restart my computer. I have to do this everytime to get my charger to work =( Please fix this apple!!!

    Don't buy!

Okay, the first one, which came with the Macbook, lasted a year and died. The second one I bought died barely 2 weeks later!!

Being an electrical engineer, I find it outright shameful! But, I am not wasting anymore words -nobody at Apple seems to be reading or taking any action to improve this product.

    Works fine for non-unibody MBP!!

Just bought one of these and noticed another reviewer said it didn't work with his older non-unibody model MacBook Pro. Well it works perfectly with mine!

Doesn't work with older MacBook Pro (2008)

I unwrapped the product from the sleek-looking, black, cardboard Apple box, 85W MagSafe Power Adapter tastefully presented in a picture on the front.

Then I opened the box and pulled out the Adapter. Nicely wrapped. Again, very pretty. I pulled out the cords, which are smoother, almost velvety compared to my first cord (which frayed next to the magnetic connector, making it worthless).

So at this point, I'm impressed. Good ol' Apple and their sleek designs. Always quality products, right?

I hooked the extension cord on for the extra few feet and plugged it into the wall. Then onto my laptop. Ta da? No. It did nothing. No green light, no orange light, no light, no power, no good. Why on earth would you make a cord for your new line of MacBooks that doesn't work for one merely two years old?

Even as I sit here typing, the battery percentage is dropping, and I'll have to hook up the half-price rip-off model that at least provides a charge (though only if the laptop hasn't died).

    A ridiculous disappointment.

Doesn't fit with Incase hard shell

The older generation MagSafe Power Adapter I had been using for a year stopped working recently. I went to the Apple Store and it was replaced free of charge. However, I was quite disappointed to notice that it is not compatible with the Incase hard shell I bought (at the same store) for my MacBook Pro last year. When plugged facing backward, the MagSafe sticks out due to the shell. When plugged with the cord facing towards me, the MagSafe connector blocks the Ethernet and Firewire connection as well as a USB port.
