    B.A.D. Do not buy..

I switched from a PC to Apple with a Mac mini, then realized I wanted to watch DVDs and I did not have a disc drive. So I bought the Super Drive external player and it worked OK for a few months but has now become unresponsive. Today I put a disc in to play and it did not respond and I was unable to eject the disc. Completely dead. Now Apple support says I have to get an exchange, at my expense, and I will lose the disc I put in it to play. Lovely. As usual this seems to happen just outside warranty coverage and we the customer is left holding the bag for an inferior product. I am shopping for a non Apple DVD player that has actual controls and external power. Do not buy this product !!!

    Not very super

I loaded one commercial product using it. All seemed well. I loaded a second product and the drive refused to eject the disc. Loading two programs before failure is not a good record.
I'll be taking it back to the shop. Do I just hope I was unlucky?

Almost perfect but would be with blue ray!!!

I can't fault this drive. The disks slide in with ease, the build quality is amazing and it is very small and perfect for taking anywhere. The only things that i would change is the addition of Blue ray and a physical eject button on the drive. Overall this drive is perfect for my needs and it is definitely worth the small extra cost over a cheap drives by other companies which i have had bad experiences with in the past. I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a small, good quality drive that they can take anywhere.

    Does it's job...but...

BE CAREFUL! If you are watching a movie on DVD and using the SuperDrive, watch out. If you are like me and enjoy laying in bed, the short usb cord can hang. It works fine, even when dangling, but BOOM, one false move and the SDrive can smash into your beautiful Retina screen and break it. Worst feeling. I wish Mac's would get on the Blu-Ray train as well. I love my movies as well as my HD, iTunes downloads look great, streaming Netflix or Cable pretty good, and DVD's passable, but man I would love a SDrive that played Blu Rays. Again, watch out... the SDrive is durable, but it can break your laptop if you are not careful

Cable is very fragile. No hardware eject

After about a year of very occasional use, my "superdrive" has given up the ghost. After checking with Apple Support, the cable has given out. It is very flimsy.

I don't understand why the superdrive doesn't come with an eject button.

It's clear that Steve Jobs didn't want people using CDs and DVDs.

If you can avoid purchasing this product, do.

    Works great with Macbook Air

Got this for my new Macbook Air. It worked right out of the box and was fun to use. I recommend this for anyone wanting to use CD/DVD media with their Macbook Air.

Ok but slow to rip CD's

I bought this to use with my 2013 retina MBP for ripping CD's to network storage for HiFi use. It looks great and works fine but it is far slower than the built in drive in my old MBP was.

So if you are planning on using one for ripping your entire CD collection then you may want to explore other options but for occasional use it's great.

Works well and Looks good, Not perfect though...

This drive will beat the typical Wallmart portable DVD drive, for the price it better be! I find that it reads and writes quickly, (I think there is an upgraded drive inside, kind of like a 7200rpm drive in an external hard drive )

    However...

This drive does need an upgrade from apple... They need to make this drive comparable with blue ray disks, giving us the option to play any DVD or CD out there in the world. I have no idea why apple hasn't already done this! I work hard for my money and I expect uncompromising performance out of all apple products!

Great addition to the Mac Mini

I bought this drive because I needed to install some software that was on a DVD as well as burn some DVDs. It has worked flawlessly.

after a few months won't work

I have to say that this product is bad. I started using in it with iMac 2012, because this computer doesn't come with a DVD drive. I give it a try. After a few months stop working, showing the message the device needs more power or connect to power cord.
I brought it to the Apple store and guess what it works on a Macbook air. The genius guy told me that might be the computer, also told me that I have to unplug any USB connection to see if this works. No luck.

    Junk!

It wasn't cheap and didn't last very long. It no longer reads any discs. Piece of junk. Don't buy!

    Stuck CDs and DVDs

Looks good, worked for a while, then discs started not ejecting in either disk utility or by dragging to the trash/eject icon.

    Dvd

When will Apple include a DVD inside the basic PC? Don't want a separate device on my desk.

    Works just fine.

I like the eject-less button feature. This device has a very clean design and looks perfect sitting next to my Macbook Air. I have no complaints. It does exactly what it is supposed to accomplish.

    DVD Superdrive

Good device. Could be better. The attached cord is an issue with regards to wear and tear. It is quite difficult to store without bending the join at the rear of the device. Prefer it to have a USB detachable patch lead. With the resolution of the screen it should have Blu Ray reader capability as a bare minimum. Apple stores do not sell protective cases for it which is quite disappointing. For such an expensive device.....it really doesnt do much at all.

    spins but won't eject cd

It is only the 2nd time I've used it! I ripped some MP3s from a CD to my MacBook Air. It worked fine. But when I went to burn the MP3s to a CD using the USB Superdrive it got part way then gave me an error and wouldn't complete nor eject. I have tried everything to eject it (short of taking it apart). When I plug it in it spins around and makes noise, but doesn't recognize anything is in there. Which is why I suspect it won't let me eject it. So not sure what to do now. I would suspect a manual eject function would be helpful.

    Nothing super about it

I bought one of these with my new iMAC and it is so slow (max 8 X) with only USB connectivity (USB 2 only, I think). The iMAC has USB3 and Thunderbolt, so is capable of supporting a far faster drive. It also fails to recognise some rewriteable DVDs. Fortunately, I don't need to use the drive very often, but it's a pain when I do. It looks nice, but the functionality is very poor. Personally, I would now buy a faster external USB3 drive with blu-ray.
