We're seeing >50% loss on these cords

We have a number of Macbooks in our company. The newer Apple power adapters get frayed edges (dangerously - electrical wires stick out and at times you'll see sparks) in greater than 50% of the adapters we have. We've seen adapters damaged in less than 2 weeks.

    someone slap the designer

i've just upgraded my 2010 air (had a barrel mag power connector that worked perfectly) with a 2013 air, which has replaced the perfect design of the old connector with this truly rubbish design. it's no longer possible to work with the laptop between your legs, as the sticking out T design means the power cord will be knocked off if you do so. also don't move the computer when it's plugged in or you'll probably find it just falls out anyway.

what were apple thinking of? why abandon a perfectly good design for something that does not actually work properly?

what next? will next years macbook air perhaps in a similar move, abandon SSD disks and go back to a mechanical disc, duct-taped to the bottom of the laptop?

    Easily broken!

I did nothing wrong to this charger and it just fell apart one day. I take great care of my tech and equipment, but one day I unplugged it and it just broke. Luckily I get a free one with my warranty, but only for another 30 days. And $79?? For this?? Come on Apple. Please make a better quality product.

    What the heck?!?!

That I must purchase a new power adapter after LESS THAN 6 MONTHS of owning my MacBook Air is RIDICULOUS. I am obsessively careful about taking excellent care of my computer and all its accessories. Pathologically careful, in fact. Seriously, Apple...

    Quality Disappointment

Very poor quality! This charger only lasted 1.5 years. Annoying to have to replace so soon (or at all).

Apple, recall these failsome power adapters!

I can't believe that this high end product exhibits such a stupid problem. I own an expensive MacBook Air that performs very well but am experiencing the same as everyone here - fraying cable on the adaptor.

This is a case where Apple should recall all power adaptors - take yours to the closest Apple store and receive a replacement that works (i.e. redesigned) free of charge.

    missing old design

I upgraded to a new Airbook this winter and hate the new power cord. I teach and am on-line a ton. I grade many nights from my chair (Airbook in my lap) and the cord disconnects far too easily. An annoyance at best. Bring back the old design.

If I could give it zero stars I would.

First off, the end of the cable attached to the base of the charger is so flimsy that I had to tape it because the protective plastic around the wires bent and split open after I wrapped my cord up for storage. The charger base slips out of outlets and it has made loud disruptions when I am studying in a quiet atmosphere. The magnet end that attaches to the compter is cool but the detachable piece on the charger with the 2 prongs on it slides off a lot. Lastly, this price is freaking ridiculous, i'm a college student, my monthly living budget for necessities is even less than $79.......please Apple, design a better charger, I have a 2012 Macbook Air, and I love it, but this charger is killing me.

    Great design, poor execution....

I have now gone through two of these for my MacBook. They just wear out... No other explanation. This last one actually 'flamed out' causing a lot of smoke and nearly a fire.

    Well...

It really isn't as bad as people point out...My charger has now recently broken and this my 3rd year of owning it. The only reason why it is broke is because of the protective cover around the wires. It is very thin and could be easily torn. If you take care of your products it should last a lot longer..My charger didn't fall out as often as the other reviews.

    Hate it...

The design is so bad that it falls out all the time... Like 30 times a day.... So frustrating and a big step back from the old version...

    Terrible

Falls off all the time. Even a slight movement is enough to loose the connection.

    Broke in 6 Months

I am extremely finicky about keeping my gadgets in ship shape. To my surprise this adapter went dead in 6 months inspite of good care and no rough use. Pretty awful for an Apple product.

    Not bad

I certainly can understand and sympathise with the negative reviews. So far, however, I have had no problems with mine and its about 8 months old. Very glad for the magnetic adaptation, as some accidents could've gone horribly wrong for the laptop were it not for this feature. The only complaint is the quality of the wire: when winding it up, you can feel the wires inside of the wire jacket twisting within the jacket. I imagine someday one of them will break and necessitate a new adaptor. The only other complaint is the price: I'd like to get a second one for work. Then again, it's Apple; I should expect to pay a premium. :)

    MacBook Air 45W charger

Ugh! Clunky to carry around, magnetic connection OK but definitely drops of easily. Bus MOST frustrating is the fact that the corner piece with the 2-prong outlet connection falls off all too easily, so easily that I lost it within a few days. Come on Apple, you can do better!

Why can't apple make a descent charger?

Why can't apple design an adapter that does not break every year?

Last week my adapter for my Macbook Air broke. This is not the first adapter that have stopped working in my company. In fact we have 10 MacBooks and of those 10 MacBooks 8 adapters have failed within the first two years. All of them with the same reason. A break in the cable between the power adapter and the macbook.

While a thin cable may look fine it simply cannot handle real world usage. And if the adapter cable breaks after the first year Apple simply refuses to replace the adapter and expect customers to buy a "replacement part". This "replacement part" is actually nothing more than a new adapter and priced exactly the same.

One would expect that a billion dollar company would be capable to design a power adapter that actually works well. Instead Apple created a bad product and forces customers to pay large amounts of money (yes, 79 US$ is a lot for a charger) Unfortunately, even the highly skilled employees lack the skill to understand the real-life wear and tear of a cable connected to a power adapter.

    Worst adapter design ever.

    Worst product apple makes

No one expects to have to buy a new power adapter for your computer.....if you are using your mac book as a portable computer then expect to have to buy a new adapter at $75+. Worst product I have come across with the Apple logo on it. But really what are your choices??

    This Adapter is pure garbage!

I sold my Mid 2009 MacBook Pro and bought the 2012 MacBook Air. While I like the Air better the new adapter is useless. It disconnects and/or falls off all the time. I'm an Apple supporter through and through but this thing is a joke. I agree that Apple should recall this product and give us all the old style adapters that never fell off or disconnected unless I wanted it to. PLEASE APPLE, RECALL THIS PIECE OF JUNK ADAPTER!!!
