Poorly constructed cable, not worth the price

45W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter has a very delicate/fragile connection between the slim cable and the adaptor box/plug. Wrapping this slim/DC cable around the hooks, as apple suggests, on the square plug still stresses this connection. The connection began to fray drastically within months of purchase so I covered it with electrical tape. First I covered just the cable, which did not seem to help for long as the tape slid along the wire. Then I covered the connecter on the box and the cable and this held for a some months till the cable stopped charging. When I took off the tape the wires were completely separated around a non-conducting thread like score.

Granted my use is extensive and I throw the cable in my backpack a lot. Laptop cables do not fray this easily. This plug is heavy and the wire far too delicate. The fabric cover for wires that is now available on many cords fares much better. Apple, you need to either change the design or construction of your charging cords or make them practically free so that your customers, and people who rely on you brand are served well.

    extremely fragile

All you have to do is look at the thickness of the cord and you'll know it won't last long. I got 14 months of use before the cord split

Terrible quality for such an expensive adapter

This product (as with other reviewers) has frayed near where the connector to the MacBook goes. I bought an extra one, as it's always handy having two and they both broke. It's actually quite dangerous, as both times I noticed whilst the power was plugged in.

I think the material that surrounds the wires is just poor quality. I have plenty of other wired items that have handled much more use over the same time, such as my headphones and other chargers and never have I seen anything like this.

    Terrible quality for the price

My experience seems similar to most customers. After a few years of light to average use the cable began to fray where it meets the power adaptor and very quickly after that stopped working.

Now I understand some of the other reviewers comments about general wear a tear and products reaching the end of their lifespans (although I do struggle with the suggestion we should just look after our possessions better, as if that's a totally new concept to someone who has just bought a £900 laptop?!). However, to charge £65 to replace a necessary accessory that is consistently failing in the same way due to its build quality/design seems pretty steep.

The charger itself has two flimsy plastic flaps that fold out so you can wind the cable up, however using these dramatically increases the amount of bending the cable is doing close to the main unit, where the fraying has occurred. So Apple has produced a product that if used in the way they designed actually negatively affects its lifespan. Not something you would expect from a premium brand.

I have had a number of laptops in the past from a range of manufacturers and never had a problem with a power supply, and if I had it definitely would not have cost £65 to replace. I am willing to pay more for Apple products because of their reputation for quality, however my experiences with this product severely damages that reputation. Coming online and seeing the sheer volume and consistency of the negative feedback for the MagSafe 2 design also makes me questions Apples' commitment to their customers.

As a result when it comes to replacing my MacBook Air (which I love), I will strongly consider switching brands. This seems ridiculous as it would be entirely a result of the quality of an insignificant, but vital accessory.

Not durable for regular travel use.

Little ears for winding cord broke off after about 1 year. After about a year a half the cord split and wires became exposed where cord that runs to the computer attaches to the transformer. I travel most days so wind and unwind the cord. I use it, I do not abuse it. The MacBook Air is meant to travel, the power adapter should be better made and much more durable. General design and functionality is fine.

    I don't know who gave this 5/5.

Okay. I've had this computer for JUST over a year, and the charger has stopped working which is infuriating. I don't want to hurt my computer by buying a cheeper charger from a company that isn't apple, but a new charger through apple is going to cost a hundred bucks! Plus shipping and handling because I don't live near an Apple Store. I am a university student, using my computer almost exclusively for school.

This is my second MacBook Air, the first one I had for almost 3 years, the computer itself stopped working but the charger ( the old one) is still being used to this day by my father.

Seriously! the exact same thing happened when they switched from the iPhone 4 charger to the 5, I have iPhone 4 chargers from 2009 that still work but I've gone through 3 iPhone 5 chargers In the last 2 months!

Apple you are seriously making me reconsider where my money is going.

Apple 45W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter for MacBook Air

I had a Macbook Pro in the past and nothing was wrong with that, but cable of 45W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter of my MacBook Air has torn apart in less that two years. This is really disappointing and considering the price that we have paid for this product Apple should do something for their customers.

    Poor Product

I've had Macs for over 30 years. By far, the most badly designed accessory for any Macbook or Mac Air or Mac Pro is the AC adapter. No matter how careful you are, the adapter breaks and shorts out long before it should; it's the Achilles heel of Apple products. At this writing, my early 2014 Macbook Air is like new, but the AC adapter just shorted out. Please, Apple, there's no reason for this.

    Poor quality

Have had mine for less than 1 year it it already is broken. I started noticing some wear and tear around 8 months, however just last week I noticed my laptop was not charging. I went to inspect the cord and I found that there was exposed wire, with sparks coming out! For the price I paid for my laptop, I did not expect to have to purchase a new charger 1 year later. My chargers from my other laptop (compaq) have lasted me 8+ years with barely so much as a scratch. Totally disappointed with the quality, however I have no choice but to buy another one. Please Apple, update the quality of your products.

    Excellent Product

I have read a lot of reviews and criticism on this product, and even viewed pictures of problems from other websites, but the pictures shows stressors from improper handling or excessive pulling.

I was trained by the US Military in electronics on combat weapons and those systems are taken to the extremes. I have spent over 27 years in some form of Government and although I was not an Apple fan at first I will be the first one to praise them for their quality. I been using Apple since 2010 and never had an issue that was not caused by extreme measures. I have used my chargers around the world and in some of the harshest environments without failure.

With that being said my son has ruin and destroyed two chargers in a period of a year and half. I "tried" to explain what he was doing wrong but like most teenagers he just blew me off. After the second charger was damaged I made him buy his third charger with his own money and after 2 years it is still functioning correctly and still looks good.

    Great Work Apple.

Poor design! Worst part of Apple.

I've had my Macbook Air for 4 days and I have to say I'm very frustrated with the poor quality of the power adapter. The magnet connection is so weak the thing keeps falling out.
I have been an avid Apple user for the past 10 years. I have owned and currently own the computers, phones, watches. I have had them all and while I am very pleased with most of the products with little complaint, this charge is ridiculous.
I am beginning to regret downsizing from my Macbook Pro with the charger that stayed put for the most part. This not only won't stay connected but it takes far too long to charge the computer.
Please, Please, Please redesign the power adapter!!

    Made by Apple?!?!

Add me to the list of the disappointed. I am about to go through my 3rd power adapter. Apple can make such well-built computers, but can't seem to be able to design an equally well-built power adapter . . . maybe add some kind of reinforcing springy something or other, or use a different material? Maybe I'll try building up my cable with a roll of electrical tape or something as soon as I buy another one.

    Poor quality and Poor design

For a company that constantly touts its commitments to quality this is a glaring exception to the rule. After a year of use it started to show signs of wear around the connection to the power supply and the plug into the laptop. It's lasted another year with out major issue but looked terrible. The following 6 months the charging process was plagued by positioning the cable just so to make it charge and finally today it gave out. It could be argued that the laptop itself lasted so long, far longer and in better condition than many (but not all) other brands usually do (in reference to its all metal design and SSD, not blind fandom), I shouldn't be surprised that a plastic charger gave out. It could also be further argued that the company so proud of its strong industrial design should have foreseen this problem. They could have easily changed the design of the charger for newer models of their laptops seeing as this has been a know issue for MANY years and appeased previous owners by not charging $80!!!! for a new charger.

I've had my Macbook Air since November of 2012 and LOVE my computer. I must have good luck because I'm only going on my third cord. The quality of the chargers are such a joke, $79 for something that doesn't last and shreds quite easily. My fiance got his computer a few months after mine (same model) and he also has gone through a few chargers. Between the two of us we've spent almost $375 on chargers in a little over three years. I'm planning on replacing my laptop in 2016 and I am really reconsidering purchasing a Mac next time around because of the ridiculous cost for poor quality accessories.

I too have had a very poor experience with Apple cables and chargers. Cable discolored and stripped near the tip of the MagSafe 2 connector and towards the middle of the cable. I also had to change the AC Plug as the charger overheated and sparks came out every time I plugged it into an outlet. Can't believe Apple stands behind such poorly designed and manufactured product! Also, replacement adapter is way overpriced, considering how cheaply-made it is.
