    Extra thick Ligntning connector

I bought this item because I have a load of older devices using 30 pin connectors and I though this would be a convenient way to charge my iPhone 5 and new iPad using the existing cables (I had already bought the Lightning to 30 pin adapter - without the cable - and found it useless as it was too large fit my iPhone with its protective case on, whereas the plug on the Lightning to USB cable supplied with the phone fitted fine).
For some reason the Ligntning conector on this cable is significantly larger than that on the Ligntning to USB cable. You cannot tell this from the photos - indeed the connectors look identical. Consequently this cable will not fit devices with many covers/cases - including Apple's own iPad cover.
Why two different sizes of Lightning plug? I would understand if this was made by a third party manufacturer but this is an Apple product!

    Don't waste your money.

I upgraded my iPad, first generation to 4th, and already had a 30 pin to HDMI adaptor, so coughed up the $35 AUD for this, but alas...incompatible. Looks like this is only useful for charging, which I could have saved $10 and just gotten a new lightning cable.

    Meets My Needs

Works great for my needs. In my car I'm able to change songs on my iphone through the steering wheel & it charges as well. On my Bose sound dock I'm able to change songs with the remote. Only downside is the price & I'm thinking I need another one to keep in my car.

    Useless except for charging

It bought this for my iPad mini but returned it because it does NOT work with the following adapters:
    - 30pins to camera SD card adapter
    - 30pins to VGA adapter
    - 30pins to composite video and RCA audio adapter
The only thing that worked for me is charging.
They should at least say which of Apple adapters ARE supported on their website!

    close but no cigar

fits well, charges the phone however, unable to stream Pandora (the reason i bought it). i have a 2011 C63 Benz. deal is the 4S works perfectly with the provided 30pin cable. here is a twist. if i connect the 4S to the factory cable and play pandora and then with the adapter cable connected to the i5 unplug the 4S and hurry and plug the 5 with the adapter cable it plays. doesn't show what is playing but works. can't figure out if the phone needs and update or the car. or maybe the cable has a glitch. i don't know but was a 40 dollar chance and it bit me. any help would be appreciated.

The price - like most things in life - is what it is. If you're an Apple regular, you should be used to that by now.

However, it isn't fully functional. It works to transfer pics from my DSLR camera to the iPad (retina) - but it does not allow me to play video on my ancient TV using a 30 pin component cable (the yellow, red, white input job). I get audio through it. But no video. Not even the NTSC/Pal option in the video setting on the iPad is showing up.

    Don't buy this for a through-connector

Apart from the severe overpricing for this connector, it has a different width of plastic surround from the generic cable. This is fine, except if you are trying to use it in a through-connector, as in a Clicon car mount, when this part of the cable is too thick to feed through the slot. Too much to ask Apple for consistency?

    Is the best option but....

Buying official apple accessories is really the best option, and you should buy it.
But I can't give this more than 2 stars.
I have bought the cable version, knowing that the plug version will not fit half the cases out there, including many apple ones.

I have more than paid for my accessories every time I buy a new product. I am now resentful of having to buy this., and not getting one in my iPad box. So resentful in fact that I am now questioning my brand loyalty. After 20 years.
Apple, you need to start treating your customers better, as we are then ones who make apple great, not you.

Suits my purpose but it's pricey

Pros: It works perfectly and does exactly what I want it to. Yay!
Cons: I had to pay so much & the fact that I even needed it in the first place. Boo!

My sole purpose in purchasing was to allow me to connect my iPhone 5 to the USB port in my 2010 Honda CRV. I needed an adapter for my existing extra long 30-pin USB cable (no extra long Lightning to USB cables yet) The short cord doesn't bother me, and it connects to the lightning port without having to fiddle with my OtterBox case. If the cord were any shorter or not there, I think making connections would actually be a PITA.

The length of this adapter cable makes it completely worthless. I cannot imagine an application where this length of cable would help anyone. Couple that with the fact that no one appears to make a lightning extension cable and I have NO solution to connect my new phone to my old docking stations.
Apple - Seriously, think about this for a minute and fix it. I need a 3 foot (1 m) cable. for the price you're charging for this cable, an extra 2.4 feet of cable isn't going to make any real difference in base cost and you might actually sell some of them.

Doesn't work with accessories that require the lightning form factor

For some reason, the lightning end of the adapter is substantially larger than the same end on the USB to lightning cable, so this will not work with anything the depends on that specific form factor. For example, I have a car mount that the cable is supposed to snap into, but it is made for the USB to lightning cable and this one doesn't fit in the mount.

It seems to work ok otherwise, but it is definitely too expensive.

30 pin to lightening adapter- Short, stiff cord with bulky lightening end

Good -it charges and plays back itunes with my ihome.

BAD - it has a too short, very stiff cord. Cord actually can stand up straight on it's own unlike the flexible charger that comes with the phone.

BAD - the lightening end too thick so and I have to take off the case, unlike the 29.00 adapter which fits without taking off the case.

BAD - Expensive. This Was a gift otherwise I suggest taking a chance on the knockoffs first.

    Not really an adapter

Bought this mainly to use my new iPad mini to VGA for teaching, using the 30-pin dock to VGA lead I already had.
It doesn't work. "This accessory does not work with this iPad". Great. Works for charging only as far as I can tell.
Apple store did reluctantly take it back and let me pay the extra for the Lightning-to-VGA lead, at an outrageous £39.

    Great Adapter! Ridiculously Priced!!!

I bought the cable from Apple after trying a cheaper Chinese cable. The Chinese cable only charged my phone. I could not get it to play music through the cable. I use a JBL ON STAGE 400P. The Apple cable worked great. I cannot believe how Apple gouges customers for simple cables that are needed when THEY switched to the lightning plug. We as customers are held basically without any choice and Apple should reconsider the outrageous price that they ask for the necessary adapters that all consumers need. Hey! We already sink enough money into your many devices, so why not treat us fairly!?!?

The adapter cable from Apple works great!

    Poor and overpriced

Having recently upgraded my old iPhone and iPad to the new iPhone 5 and iPad 4th gen, I was advised that I needed this adaptor for my old apple accessories. This is very expensive for what is a simple adaptor and I feel should have been provided with the main items.
It then gets even worse when connecting it to my old hdmi video connector I get the message that it is not supported and now find I have to buy yet another adaptor.
Apple need to think these things through before releasing them (a bit like maps) and cease subjecting their loyal customers to buying overpriced adapters to do what their old equipment did.
