Doesn't quite live up to the previous generation

I'm adding this AP Extreme to my existing network of previous generation AP Extreme. The set up was somewhat buggy with unknown errors. I had to hard reset the unit to get it working properly to extend the current network. After the set up, I placed the unit where the old AP Extreme was, it turned out the new unit couldn't pick up the signal from the main AP Extreme. Clearly, the range did not match the old generation devices. I'm a little disappointed that it performs below my expectation, and also below the previous generation devices in terms of range.

The plus side is that there's no more bulky adapter to deal with. The footprint is nice and small. Too bad the signal and the reception do not live up to its good look.

    WOW...we got the best!

we had problems with our wireless system in our house for the past few months. We have a 3800 square foot old home (concrete block!!) and all of our products are apple. it was a nightmare getting signal across our home. We had an airport extreme from 2009. we were always dropping signal. we replaced our cable modem, had new wiring, purchased several extenders and still could not get signal across our house. We read bunch of reviews and saw pretty good reviews on this gem. WOW! are we impressed! this thing works right out of the box. it was an easy set up as expected. now the signal across our home is so strong! the signal never drops. absolutely the best! we highly recommend this product! you will not be disappointed.

    Excruciating

10 to 20 seconds it's WiFi: On, the next 10 to 20 seconds it's WiFi: Looking for Networks.

No steady connection lasting more than 30 seconds.

Can't reliably access printers, other computers, or internet. This is very damaging to us.

    Great product !

When I bought my MacBook Air 13" i5, 4GB RAM and 128GB Flash Storage, I bought this AirPort Extreme. I had a slight problem getting it connected and everything because Verizon isn't the best internet provider. After getting it to work with a green light on and the internet actually working, it works flawlessly ! I live in a 1,000+ sq ft home and I get connection through the entire house, I go outside that has 3 acres, I can still get 2-3 connection bars all the way out there. I haven't had a single problem with it since I bought it and I'm glad I bought it. Lightning fast internet, long distance connection, it's just a perfect device !

I love the design and look of this product. The only problem that i have is that most of my things that i am using even though they are made from apple aren't always connecting to it because it can't find the ip address, thats the only problem everything else is great

    Not a good product

I have to restart this device at least once every week. I had no problems with my previous AirPort Extreme running for many years without any restart required. Very disappointed.

    Works great

Had a Comcast router which was terrible.
We were always getting dropped and could Only have 4 devises at once.
Also had little to no reception at the other end of the house and it caused bad interference in my wireless xbox headphones. Switched to Comcast standard modem and add the extreme.
Solved all my problems. Never seen our iPads or iMac load pages so fast. Hasn't dropped a devise yet.

    BEWARE OF PACKAGING

There is a serious issue with the packaging the Aairport Extreme come in- pls consider if you buy! Here is my case (which will also be going on YouTube). I just purchased a new Airport Extreme. Got home, and unboxed while standing in my kitchen. There is only one logical way to open the box, which is to hold top and bottom and pull apart. When I did this, the Airport Extreme flew out the box and dropped 4 feet onto tile floor, with a huge thud and its bottom cover broken off. Just astonishing to say the least, and not what you want to see with your new $200+ purchase.

In the box, the unit sits on the bottom segment of the packaging, with about a 1 cm of elevated packaging surrounding it. Also, pulling the top section of the packaging while holding the bottom section created a vacuum, which seemed to help launch into mid air (no pun intended)

So I now need to consider returning it before using it, as it may or not work or have the lifecylce it should. I read up on this and noticed many people had the same issue. A huge hassle and incredibly stressful for me.

Why has Apple developed such incredibly bad packaging? I am a dedicated Apple user, I bought this to replace an old Airport Extreme. But this experience is just mind-numbing. This packaging is so badly thought-out and can create a horrible user experience - it is astonishing Apple let this out the door. I havent even used it, but have no choice but to give it one star at this point. Complete waste of time dealing with this product thus far. (on a Sunday to boot)

    Mac only no windows support

It does its job as a router. In our household we have Macs as well as Windows machines. Apple customer care does not support the product for windows and sent me a link to an article which did not rectify the isse. Apple get with the real world and offer support for both formats. Cannot access the 2TB drive or attached external HD to it After hours of frustration the Airport Extreme will be relagated to a wi fi repeater...an expensive excercise.

As a router its style over substance, love the look but performance is nothing startling.

    DOA

Take this with a grain of salt,

my new (refurbished) AirPort Extreme was basically dead on arrival.

I set it up numerous times and the unit just keeps powering off.

I am having this unit replaced tomorrow.

    Amazing Print Server Capabilities

The router works amazing as a print server for the small business world. We were able to quickly setup Xerox and Canon printers, which made the process of network printer amazingly simple. Love this machine!

Excellent APEx upgrade from my older APExtreme

Huge Apple product fan and have been using APExpress, APEtreme, and Applt TV for many years now and decided to upgrade to the newer, smaller foot print, APExtreme. Without a doubt, its has increased my local range along with faster data transmission times. The setup was 10x easier than I thought it would be, since my old system is WPA2 with every peripheral secured, but I just plugged it in, booted up my Mac and Airport Utility software, and it walked me through migrating my old systems settings over to the new one, AMAZING and so SIMPLISTIC! Started to check all my other peripherals and everything was linked to the new APExtreme, no problems.

    Excelent!!!

I thoroughly read many reviews about the performance of the Airport Extreme and was skeptical even at the time of purchase. Had read that it did not communicate well with older versions of the Airport Express (i have two) so I also bought one of those just in case... But then just out of the box connected all of them (Airport Extreme the two older AExpress, the new one, all to different stereos throughout the house)to a single glitch during installation or lost signal in the month and a half since I installed my network. I can say that am really happy how Apple products work together...

    Xmas woes

I was given Apple TV for Xmas and successfully hooked it up. But, having done that it pretty much brought down my wifi, what with being a family with an iMac, 2 iPads, 2 mini iPads, 3 iPods an Xbox and Sky Catch up. I then bought Airport Extreme and whilst we haven't noticed a massive improvement in speed, we can now all access wifi with no problem. Well worth the money!

    Shocked

This is the first Apple product that I've purchased and felt utterly let down by it.

I purchased it to replace my Virgin Media Superhub running on 2.4GHz. I thought with dual band and 6 antennas on the Airport Extreme Wi-Fi speeds would be much better or even at least a little better than the standard hub I had. However on tests using my iPhone 5s, iPad Air, Mac Mini and laptop speeds attained were no better, and in some cases worse than the Virgin Media Super Hub.

So although it looks and all the blurb makes it sound amazing I'm afraid real life use is far from good :(

    Disappointing

First of all, if you do not live in the USA you may get a surprise when you try to plug an ADSL line into this unit because it is NOT modem. It is a router and you will need a modem to convert the ADSL signal before connecting the modem to the Airport Extreme. Apple does not make this clear.

Second, the signal strength is not great. My $80 HP wireless printer is just as good so I have to continue using my Netgear extender to boost the signal around the house and that is not compatible with Apple TV. So I either have to buy an Airport Express to boost the signal or return the Airport Extreme. I think the latter. Worse product I have bought from Apple, ever.

    Worse than 2 generations ago!

I replaced my Airport Extreme from 2 generations ago because I got the new Macbook Pro with AC and it was a big mistake. When it works, it's extremely fast. Unfortunately, it works for maybe 2 hours than disconnects. I've tried absolutely everything I could think of, including calling applecare numerous times, to no avail. It simply does not work. I have 5 webcams, numerous game consoles (PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One) 2 laptops, 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, and even more connected to the internet. However, with this new router I have to routinely reset every single connection every 2 hours and power on and off the router to get the internet. The sad part is, when I plug in the old router from years ago it works perfectly fine with all those devices and I have no problems (just no AC for the macbook pro).
