If you use VPN, choose something else.

Even though it says it supports PPTP passthrough - it's impossible to get it to actually work, since it seems to conflict with the "Back to my mac" feature. Instead of honouring the instruction to forward port 1723 to the VPN server, it just drops the packets.

A fundamental flaw in an otherwise decent product.

    Great technology, badly implemented

Had issues with my old Airport network setup (~2010ish), upgraded everything (!) (internet service, attached storage and of course this new Airport Extreme, from my local Apple store) Some smaller issues as discussed in most reviews, incl. the new Airport Utility, but most importantly:

Initially, not too shabby, even saw some speed improvements using my older MacBook(s) when it works. However, the same old issues returned almost immediately: unstable filesharing resulting in frequent hangs, to the point of not restarting remotely, having to literally pull the plug since there's still no on/off switch. If the old Airport is anything to go by, after a couple of months it will be so worn down that it will get easier...

This is aggravated by the Finder, which despite a supposed multi-thread rewrite completely hangs as well if even only one drive hangs (like the above, even after disconnecting) . Sometimes to the point where it can't be relaunched and then blocks the Mac from restarting too, requiring a hard shutdown just like the Airport Extreme itself.

The Guest Network feature is still borderline pointless: it is tied to the same Access Control than the main network, leaving you with 2 choices:
    - Having to add every . single . guest to the list even if they just want to pop on the internet for a few minutes, going through the hassle of having them find their MAC address etc., which defeats the purpose of a G-U-E-S-T network
    - Or turning off Access Control completely, making the main network substantially less secure, defeating the purpose of that feature...

The technology is nice, but badly implemented; if it won't affect you, great. But if you have a usage case similar to mine, and you will run into these issues several times a day, it becomes tiresome quickly. Hopefully this will help you to avoid it.

    Extremely easy!

I didn't really need a new router but after making the switch from PC to a Mac and having the change go so seamless, I had to get it.

    The router is:

    Easy set-up
Capable of configuring if you want
    Secure

Best of all, I don't need to go down stairs to reset the router once a week.

When you become complacent with your equipment you don't know what you're missing, well this router has it.

    Excellent, Fast, Easy!

A friend purchased this new Airport Extreme to replace the router side of the ISP provided router/cable modem. I set it up for him. I have setup Linksys, D-Link, Netgear routers numerous times. This is the easiest most intuitive setup I've ever experienced. I was so impressed I went out and got myself one and did the same thing. I'm getting amazing speeds (on a 100Mbps service). All of my devices are faster and the range is increbile. Highly recommended!

    Another amazing Apple product!

Apples done it again! They solved every one of my home networking problems that i'v ever had over the years with one simple easy to use product. This is the first Airport Extreme I have owned and just like all Apple products it works fantastic. I had it all setup and working within 5 minutes of getting it out of the box and the rest of my devices connected (Mac Book pro, iMac, 2 Apple TV's, iPhone 5, and 2 windows computers) Thanks to this amazing router I am now able to stream 1080p movies to both Apple TV's simultaneously without losing my internet on my Mac Book where before I would lose my internet streaming one movie to one Apple TV... Keep the products coming Apple!!

Easy setup BIG jump for me

Haven't upgrade my router for like 6 years (Netgear G), so I pay$45/month for 30/mb down and 2/mb up and I'm only able to get those speed on my MBP connected with ethernet. All my wifi enabled device only getting 10 down and .5 up, after I swap the Airport Extreme my wifi speed tripled to 30 down and 2 up which what I should get.

APE is expensive than other N router on the market that can give you the same speed but there is no doubt that APE is the easiest router to setup and configure.

    Blazing Fast and Amazing Range

Replaced a generation 3 Extreme with this. Wow! No buffering issues between Tivo's. Signal reaches a block away from my house. Tivo stream works with this router and doesn't require a wired network. The time machine backup is quick and works like a charm.

    AirPort Extreme

Very Happy with the new AirPort Extreme! I've had a Belkin Router and after less than a year it has been giving me problems. I recently purchased the AirPort Extreme and I am very amazed at how easy it was to install and how powerful it was! I recommend every one to purchase this item.

    AExBS

Just purchashed the new Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station to replace my 1st gen Airport Express. I'm totally amazed by the increased speed and range of the new AExBS. The form factor is excellent. I setup my old Airport Express in the garage to extend my wireless signal. That was a breeze to setup with the Airport Utility. All in all very pleased with my purchase.

    A PIECE OF JUNK

I will NEVER buy another Apple Router... EVER!! After everything is hooked up and running, and after 24 hours, the router starts dumping computers!! My iPhone cannot connect to the router, Nor can my iPad! When I disconnect and restart everything, it IS the SAME problem!!

Easy to set up from old extreme

Read the setup instructions, but used the info here to set up, i.e. plugged the unit in ,clicked on, when found by utility followed instructions for connecting cable and replacing existing extreme. And Wahlah success. Now getting more than double the speed from cable provider.

    Superfast!!

I purchased this to go with two new laptops we'd bought a new 13" retina and a 13" top spec Air. We have been using the BT HomeHub 3 but after having various problems with it, particularly with Airplay, I decided to swap it for an Airport extreme.

What can I say, I'm so impressed with it, so easy to set up, so easy to manage and all achievable from an iOS device or a mac. What I really wasn't expecting was such a bump in my broadband speed, on the BT HH3 I was averaging about 20-30mbps on BT's infinity service, using the Airport it shot straight up to over 70mbps. I had read this had happened with other users of the AIrport extreme on BT but didn't know how much of an issue my HH3 router was until I replaced it.

One small issue I did have was with my Xbox Live. It seems to default to Moderate NAT settings but a few Youtube videos soon showed me how to switch it to stay open.

less range and performance than old airport extreme

I have a large property with two close by buildings -tried to extend the network with old airport extreme and with an airport express. Signal is not stronger and is not faster. Spend too much time rebooting. Going back to the original airport extreme and throwing this new $200 unit into the graveyard with all my windows products. This is the first apple product to go into my window graveyard.

The best money you will ever spend!

My townhome is 3 floors so my internet wasn't so hot even though I pay Time Warner Cable big bucks for their fastest internet. Since I have all Apple computers and Apple tv I bought two of these. I put one on the 3rd floor and one on the first floor. My internet is now CRAAAAAAAZZZZZZZYYYYYY FAST. HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest any one with the same situation to get at least one of these. You will thank me.

    Excellent - except documentation

Bought to replace aging Airport. Wow, what a speed and range difference! Easy setup. Named it same as the old one and everything connected. 5 stars for performance.

But it gives some options, such as guest network, a 5ghz network name, etc., and doesn't explain or even mention them in documentation. Why not? Help us out, here, Apple.

Stable, Speedy, Strong and Super easy to setup.

I just replaced my edimax router ac1200 since it died in a week. Airport extreme supports uPnP and the VPN. In addition, you can set it up wireless - edimax one needs wire connection for setup.

    Best router I've owned

I have tried every high end router from Linksys, Belkin, and Netgear and could never get Internet speeds above 20-28Mbps and with the AirPort Extreme I'm getting Internet speeds of 55-75Mbps a lot better than every other router out there. It's the same speeds I get as if I'm wired directly to the router. I love this router!

Fabulous! It does exactly Apple claim

    Easy to install
    Blisteringly fast wifi.
I test my wifi speed a couple of times a week.
Download has increased from 15- 20 Mbps average to +/- 55Mbps.
I pay my Internet provider for 50mbps.
    It is truly amazing

    new airport express

Like some others who have written reviews here, I live in an older 2 story home with thick walls. For years I have been frustrated with TWC's inability to solve my reception issues. I have every Apple product ever made (or so my wife says) so why have I never tried Airport Extreme? Well, yesterday I purchased one, set it up (took one call to Apple Support to assist me and one call to TWC to disconnect the old wireless) and now I have incredibly better reception - from no reception upstairs in my bedroom to 4 bars! Amazing. I plan to buy one for my office. If you have had problems like me, this may be your answer.

    Speed, Space, Style.

This router is a top-notch router that gives plenty of horsepower. It sets-up in seconds and connects with other base stations to make one impressive network. The new addition of Wireless AC bandwidth is going to provide plenty of throughput for some time to come. Very impressed with all aspects of this easy to use Airport Extreme.

It doesn't go without some wanted additional aspects. I would like to see additional ethernet ports as it only has 3 to hard connect devices. This isn't as big of a deal as it used to be due to the mainstream of wireless devices. You're not able to mount this to a wall, which in some spaces is rather nice.

All in all I have to give this stellar router a 5 out of 5. The price point seemed reasonable to me given the new AC bandwidth and smaller footprint. Their are other brands out there that have similar specs, but for the value and dependability I'm sticking with a product that has always come through for me.
