Tried 2 of them -neither worked (couldn't connect -wired DL speed too slow

I have owned at least 8 Apple Airport products and this was the first not to be perfect out of the box

I installed one yesterday and my "wired download speed" dropped from 80 MB/sec to 7 MB/sec AND none of my iOS devices could connect to the network at all. My MBP could connect to the wireless network, but would drop the signal in less than a minute.

I returned it today and tried a second one --- same story... Maybe I have a network interference issues..

I decided to stick with my Airport Extreme 5th Generation which works fine

    My Prayers Have Been Answered!

I live in a townhouse and my computer and router are in my office located on the top floor. My audio-visual equipment is on the bottom floor. There's always been an issue with wireless signal strength but that issue has been resolved with the latest Airport Extreme.
I actually watched a movie without getting a buffering notification.

double speed over older airport extreme

My laptop (and all my computers) is only 802.11/n but it has much better speed than before. I was only able to get about 81 to 108 mbits/second from my corner of the house, but now it's 162 to 216. Meanwhile, in the room itself, computers there are getting 450 mbits/sec instead of 300.

So even if you have old hardware there are benefits to speed and distance, as hoped and expected, but you never know.

    Much better range and bandwidth

Installed last night and immediately saw a massive improvement in signal strength and bandwidth at the far ends of my house (I have a very long house). Haven't got any 802.11ac devices yet but it is still an excellent improvement on all my 802.11n ones.

    Another superb product!

Just picked up the new Airport Extreme today. In one word - Brilliant! I had an old Airport Extreme 1st Gen - The new one gives me the same superb features that I have come to expect and demand however this moves it on another notch. 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz and now the AC features which I have been holding out for. The new Airport was up and running within 1 minute. Turned the device on, moved the Cable modem cat5 cable into the WAN port and that was it. I logged into the Airport management tool and it asked right away whether I wanted to migrate the data across. Genius! It wouldn't have been too much of a problem for myself however it means that I do not have to re register all my wireless devices with the new Airport. I would throughly recommend. Airplay is not a problem because I already have an Airport Express!

    faster farther

I have multiple airport extremes and this new one definitely has a greater range and increased speed. Wish I had the ac wifi in my laptops.

    Finally a product that works

I have a big house, around 4000 s.f. and i can't get a good signal at all in second floor or in back yard prior to this amazing product. I did try the previous model with no success and i give this new extreme a shot. It works. I have a full bar signal on second floor and in back yard. I love it. worth the money. i can stream netflix on second floor, super fast internet on all of my ios devices and i have all of them. 2 ipads, 1 ipad mini, 2 iphones and 1 i touch. Love it!!!

I was looking forward to Apple's first AC router. I currently use Airport Extreme 5th Gen. Unfortunately, after several tests, I decided to return the unit. I have a fairly big house. Multiple levels. Outdoor area. My 5th Gen Airport output to 2nd Fl office is consistently at 162. Sometimes it pushes up to 207. With the AC model, same channel, I get 81-108. These numbers are based on n clients. Very disappointing.

If you are considering an upgrade from Gen 5 Airport, I would reconsider until more of your devices are AC ready.

Sorry Apple. I am fan. But this router is way below standard

    Still no airplay

    The ball = dropped.

I have been waiting years to replace my aging wifi router with an extreme. Holding out for the new version which would surely introduce airplay.

Would it have been so hard to include it... even as an option...

But no. Its just another router in a (admittedly nice) white box.

    Delighted so far

Ordered immediately after WWDC 2013 to replace an venerable Linksys WRT54G whose fading antenna power was failing.

Delighted so far, setup was straightforward, done in less than 10 minutes from opening the box. Gigabit ethernet is delivering the full bandwidth from my cable modem for the first time and the wireless coverage is uniformly excellent in my thick walled and three storey Victorian terrace, noticeably quicker for my n capable devices. I don't have any ac devices yet to test those even higher speeds.

Wireless sharing of a Kodak printer also working as hoped.

Happy to recommend - nice job Apple.

    So far it's excellent

The router is way faster then my 5th generation Airport extreme by a milestone. This is a remarkable design and improvement over the previous gen and I just love it.

    Great router

I just bought the router an hour ago and I am really satisfied. Streaming videos on 4 different PCs and speed hasn't been affected! Also, range is excellent.

    Great buy!

I've used (tried) several different routers over the last 4 yrs including linksys EA3500, ASUS RT-AC 66U, and the Netgear N750. I tried all of these routers because I was unhappy with my original Apple Extreme. The original Extreme just wouldn't reach the far corners of my single story home.
I did finally settle on the second generation of the Apple Extreme after Apple bumped up the wattage (strength) on it, and have been using it ever since. I wasn't completely happy with it, but it did a reasonably good job.
I was completely surprised to see the release of this newest Apple Extreme, and decided to give it a try since it really touted increased speed and most importantly range.
I have to say that my personal search is now over. This thing has excellent signal strength throughout my entire house, and is performing really nicely.
    Easy to setup as well.
Apple definitely has a winner with this one!

Mostly Great Wifi Router - Looses One Star for Difficulty Getting to Work

Very nice update - looks great, better range and strength than previous generation. Only problem is difficulty getting to work out-of-the-box. I'm tech savvy, but required a call the Apple Care to resolve issues getting to work. Overall, great device, once you can get it to work.

    Exceptionally fast

Extended my new Time Capsule with new Airport Extreme. Wow! Paying for 25 megabit per sec download speed from ComCast and have never seen that on speedtest.net, but now I'm getting 27 mbit/sec download speed consistently with new MacBook Pro Retina display. Set up with Airport Utility software was extremely easy. Steve said in the wake of the iPhone 4 antenna issue they had labs at Apple to test wireless signals. I'm glad he left us such a great lab and engineers to produce marvels like this. This base station has been a huge boost to our wireless speed and reliability. Still looks nice on the sofa table in the main room, too.

    Works Great!

I love it - setup is easy, of course, and I plugged in a USB drive to use as a network disk and it works super. File transfers over WiFi are also much faster with this unit!

Does not work with older Airport Express

After 45 mins on phone w/ customer support I learned the new airport setup utility will not talk to older (2008) AEx, so it's impossible to stream music to the AEx with a brand new Airport Extreme. My 2 year old Netgear dual-band router did it flawlessly.

It seems Apple simply decided drop support for the old AEx's, forcing users to buy new products.

As a router the new Extreme was a snap to set up and seems to operate well. Just beware if you plan on streaming music to an older Airport Express.
