Easy set up & works great

I needed to replace a CISCO router that was several years old. I read many of the reviews on the AirPort Extreme prior to making my purchase. I must say that my experience so far with this base station as been very satisfactory. I am experiencing much improved speed. The set up could not have been simpler. I simply downloaded the AirPort Utility app to my IPAD (would also down load to my IPHONE 5S), plugged in my AirPort Extreme and that is about all I had to do, except name my network, put in a password and tap next. I continue to be impressed with Apple products.

Gives Early '09 iMac New Life

My home router connects through my ISP modem and ran into an initial installation glitch, probably my fault, called the free (for 90 days) support line and was talked through the setup process (including using my old Airport as a 'router extender') by an extremely competent and patient support guru. The new Airport Extreme worked like a charm within 90 minutes of being out of the box. My Early '09 iMac operates noticeably faster and crisper, so much so I think I will defer plans to replace it with a newer model. One minor complaint is the extremely tiny size of the instruction booklet font, virtually unreadable in the absence of microscopic eyes, had to use a magnifying glass, and the same is true of deciphering the serial number etched into the bottom of the device. In terms of living up to its advertised promises, however, I couldn't be happier with current Airport Extreme.

    Problematic

Works well most of the time but will drop the wireless signal and needs a reboot. This has become extremely annoying. I have been forced to take it out of my system. I have tried all suggestions and the problem still persists. I will be taking it to the Apple store for help.

Airport Express is an excellent router.

I have a cable modem and it took me longer to unpack the Airport Express than it did to install it. The trick is to follow all the prompts exactly. I was up and running in under 10 minutes and that amount of time would have been sooner except I was running wires behind the desk.
In one review it says that it absolutely will not work with an ATT Micro-Cell. I find that curious because it works just fine with mine. Any trouble I've had with the Micro-Cell has been traced to the device itself, not the Airport Express.
I've ordered another Airport Express to use as an extender. It isn't that I want to be able to pick up my network 10 blocks away, it is because I live in a stucco house and the wire mesh can act as a Faraday cage. We are changing to monitored systems such as the Nest Thermostat and the Nest Protect, so I want to make sure there aren't any "dead zones" inside the house.
Yes, it's expensive, but you get what you pay for.

    Save your money

I bought this AE to replace the TG582n router supplied by PlusNet, unfortunately because the AE keeps disconnecting whenever my internet is idle my broadband speed (ethernet) has been dropping continuously over the six weeks I've been using it.

I have now gone back to using the TG582n and I'm once again looking for a new modem with better wifi speeds.

    The best router

I've had many routers for last 5 years, but When I change all with Apple Airport how everything works fine. I have one Airport Extreme in The living room and one Airport Express in the bedroom. The internet connection is super and the speed of Home Network is the best. I have many devices at home - Mac Mini, MacBook pro, MacBook Air of my wife, 2 iPhones, 1 iPad, one WD My Cloud wifi hard drive and 2 Smart TV which I use to play movies and music from Internet and from My WD My Cloud wifi hard drive. This is the best configuration ever, and I've never thought to change AirPort with something else.

    Not a good router

I don't know what the problem is with this router, but thankfully I waited before selling my previous generation Airport Extreme. This router is slooowwww. It can take up to 30 seconds to move from screen to screen, regardless of time of day or night - I'm in a small house and old router worked just fine. Buyer beware.

    Extreme Performance & Minimum Fuss

Ever since I installed this router it has performed flawlessly. This A1408 model AirPort Extreme covers our entire home with a signal pattern that has no obvious dark areas. It has never required a reboot and is compatible with all of our devices.

This was my first experience with the Apple Airport Utility. It seemed weird not to use a web page for configuration. At first I missed the “control” of the traditional router interface until I realized that the configuration utility had our home network up and functioning faster than any web page ever had. I set up a guest network with a separate password without using the manual.

The 5th generation Airport Extreme is a great WiFi router.

    Not the entire package

Thank you Apple for providing a device without the necessary cables to actually make it work out of the box. I really enjoy having to go out of my way to purchase cables in order to make your simple devices work, it really adds to the overall Apple experience. Also, your shipping tracking in the UK is terrible, making it impossible to know which day to expect delivery and to be present to receive.
I just hope the device fulfils its purpose once it finally gets connected.

High price that may not be justified.

You would think that at the premium price for the router, that it would offer all of the Apple wireless services - AirPlay & AirPrint, but it has neither. Your Mac or PC can print to a printer over your wireless network, but your iPad will still require an AirPrint-enabled printer to be used. And the smaller base station offers Airplay, again this is missing from their top-of-the-range router.

It's a good router, and I liked the way that as I was updating an older Airport Extreme on the network, the new 'tower' model was able to import all of the network settings incredibly quickly, and started to work as soon as I had reset my ISP's modem. The range is good, and the design of the router is certainly more convenient for my crowded home office.

However, it is priced at a premium, lacks some of the features that you might expect Apple to include at this level of cost & there are cheaper routers available that offer similar performance. It is down to you to decide whether the extra cost justifies the lack of features in return for the greater convenience.

Great for Time Machine, Not So Great For WIFI

Bought this earlier in the year as I needed a drive to run Time Machine. Although its expensive I thought it worth the money as, being Apple, the WIFI is bound to be good. I am on a fibre optic deal and the coverage from the Airport Extreme is poor. We have the iMac upstairs in a study and the Airport Extreme downstairs, and the signal is terrible. Gone back to Netgear now. Works great with Time Machine though, just a very expensive way to back up your Mac!!

    Lousy, will try to return

Purchased this router less than 2 weeks ago. DSL modem has been placed in bridging and this is handling all of the routing. Wireless signal is good. Worked OK for a couple of days. Then increasingly this thing seems to be rebooting and locking up irregardless of what I do. Unuseable. I reinstalled my old cheapy Netgear N dual signal and configured it the same way. In 24 hours I have not had a single issue. I worked at isolating the issue by power cycles of various devices. I have iPhones, macbook pro, iPad, printer, apple TV, ROKU. They all drop out. I also completed a reset to factory defaults and the thing is rebooting regularly. This is strictly an airport issue and the product is no good.

As I attempted to isolate the issue I was very disappointed in the Airport utility as the only means of pursuing trouble. The utility is extremely limited and is of almost no troubleshooting help. You can configure and check signal strength on devices. Beyond that the utility completely void. I do not recommend this product.

Bad power supply on 3 different routers

The router is great except for one major issue. It can power off completely once every few days. I have bought/returned 2 of these already and now the 3rd one did the same and I will be returning for another brand. My power outlet does not seem to be the problem, tried multiple power strips and plugged directly into the wall...same result as the router keeps turning itself off. Plus, I have other devices using the same power strip/outlet and those work fine. It is a pain to continuously unplug and restart the router every time this happens. Apple does not know what the issue is, but obviously this is a major problem, so beware.

Slightly better signal than my old router with 5 dbi pole

This is the most expensive router i've ever bought. After reading a lot reviews, I decided to buy this to expand my network area range. But it's just a little better than my current router and some areas are worse.

It's very fast when you can get the signal above 50%. But it's not a good choice for whoever want to expand wifi range at all...

    Simple, Easy, and Reliable

I was looking to replace my n-standard router which was giving me connectivity issues on multiple devices. I have been happy with my switch to the Airport Extreme and look forward to its continued use at home. Setup was a breeze, and while other brands have more customizable features when it comes to management, the available changes are more than adequate for anybody's home network. I have had zero issues with connectivity, the network range has increased without using a repeater, and I feel comfortable saying it is definitely worth the price despite only having it for a few days.

    Great router & NAS works!

Network setup: modem - netgear wireless router (connected 8 port switch & airport extreme)

Hardware connected to airport extreme AE is a 3TB WD NAS & an iMac

The wifi coverage provided by AE within the house is amazingly fast. BTW, I have 3 story house including the basement. The good thing is I can now access all my files stored in WD NAS from PS3 (wired thru 8 port switch) and all my idevices (iphones, ipad mini) and MAC computer (MBP & iMac). With this network setup my Apple TV works perfect as well.

Overall, I'm a satisfied owner now of Airport Extreme.
