Be VERY careful with this cover

I purchased this cover after reading negative reviews on the iPad Air 2 Smart Case. It does a decent job of protecting either the front or back of the iPad adding very little bulk to the beautifully thin device. However DO NOT rely on the device staying on in the folded reading position. while on my coffee table in this position, I pushed the volume button gently which in turn dislodged the iPad from the cover and sent it sliding off the table luckily onto carpet. I would recommend having the cover fully open attached to front or back.

I've since purchased the full case for iPad Air 2 and can't understand what the negative reviews (besides price) were about. That's a fine product that does it's job well. Looks like I wasted my money on the one sided cover.

The good: Nice feel when the cover is folded behind the iPad Air 2. Solid feel adding next to no extra bulk to the iPad. Nice suede underside offering nice protection of the screen when closed & a nice feel on the hands when open.

The bad: Can lead to a drooped / broken iPad if not used VERY carefully.

    Why, Apple?

I don't generally write reviews, but I am for the Apple Smart Cover. Sorry to be so negative, but I don't like anything about this cover. My old iPad's leather cover was perfect. This one is cheap (vinyl -- really, Apple?) and three panels instead of four cause the supporting triangle to collapse with even slight pressure on the screen or when the IPad is even slightly shifted. You messed with a good thing, Apple -- why?

Been using these covers since iPad 2 released

If you want to keep how thin and light the Air 2 is, then this is the cover for you. It also allows you to see and show off the beautiful gold back.

    Black??

My wife bought me a "black" cover. It works just fine, but it's definitely not black. If I had been with her when she bought it, I probably would have passed. I have a 3 year old iPad 2 cover that's black and, although it's worn, it doesn't show dirt. I think the "black" (read medum grey) cover will look dirty pretty quickly. Hey Apple, I think we'll call this one a swing and a miss...or at least a foul.

    A nice stand

the Smart Cover is fully compatible with tech 21 mesh case and is a nice stand. I like the sleep wake function, and also that it does not flap around too much. I would recommend this cover with the tech 21 mesh case. Without it, it's pretty much just a sleep/ wake stand. I got the tech 21 mesh case and it it is perfect with the cover. The only negative I would give is that it is a little flappy, and one of the stands is weak and ready to fall over. Overall, I really like it as a stand and a tech 21 mesh case companion

Happy with the new 3-fold design

On the contrary to other comments, I am happy with how the shade of grey this cover compliment the space grey colour of iPad Air2. Also please with the stability when typing despite the change from the previous 4-fold to the present 3-fold design. The only thing I have to get used to, is the typing angle which is of a lower inclination than the previous 4-fold design. So far one happy camper here :-)

Nice Cover But Not Black Enough

The cover is really a dark gray and not black. Not as black as the leather one that I had for the iPad 3.

I wish that there was a leather version of this available.

It protects the screen when closed and protects the back when open without adding too much thickness.

    Dissappointed

Ordered the black version of this cover online and when it came, was very disappointed that it was not black, but dark grey.. definitely not what I wanted... :( Other than the color, the functionality and construction of the case was fine... but nothing special...

It's dark grey. Not remotely black.

Fits the iPad Air 2 perfectly and works just as it should.

The dark grey colour complement the gunmetal iPad Air 2 very nicely, but it isn't black. Not even close.

    Not what I expected

Bought this for my wife. She was used to the full cover on her old iPad. She likes to use her iPad while laying in bed. This one with the magnets does not stay on if you move around at all. Wanted to be able to see the pretty gold on the back but going to have to upgrade. If you just use it sitting on a table then it's ok. If you use it on your lap, in bed, etc you won't be happy.

    Poor at best

I am a huge Apple fan and this is my 3rd ipad. I have had the full smart case the last 2 times but got this Smart Cover because I refused to pay $79, for a case. It was bad enough this one was $39. While I love my new iPad air this cover is almost useless. It does turn the unit off but it pops off when folded back and without the full case the metal bottom of the iPad is so slippery it won't stay in place on your lap. Stop being greedy Apple, this case is worth nothing really, just sell the full smart case for a fair price, $79 is not fair.

    It's not black!!

Great product but why is it sold as black when it is in fact dark grey? Very misleading!

    working well

I like the white color, and it seems that we don't need a "case" to add to the thickness of the iPad to make it more than 6.1mm. One good thing is when you flip it the unit is on, so you don't have to press the Home button to make it on. It adds protection to the screen in case you are in a restaurant and need something to protect the screen from spilled sauce or soup.

    It's a medium-dark grey not black

If the color was actually black, this would be five stars. It fits my brand new iPad Air 2 perfectly and works better at holding the iPad while I use it than the leather cover (that was actually black) that I had on my iPad 2. Overall, I love it. I just wish it matched my moleskin notebook and iPhone case.

    Black Smart Cover Isn't Black

I've been a lover and user of the Smart Cover ever since it was introduced back in 2011 alongside the iPad 2. I recently used a black Smart Cover with my iPad Air and didn't have any complaints with it, works exactly as it should.

Having just purchased an iPad Air 2 in Space Grey I naturally went for a black Smart Cover again which has just arrived this morning. My very first observation is that the black Smart Cover isn't black! It's more of a very, very dark grey colour which complements the Space Grey iPad well. I like it and I'll use it but I was expecting a black Smart Cover and when I put this new model alongside my old iPad Air Smart Cover you can clearly see the difference colour wise.

So whilst I love the Smart Cover I was a bit miffed that it wasn't pure black as advertised and the same as the previous model. Just a warning to anyone looking to get the black model.
