Image Editing in ColorSync

Matching Your Image to a Specific ColorSync Profile

To modify your image so it is matched (converted) to a specific ColorSync profile:

Step 1: Choose Match to Profile in the first pop-up menu.

Step 2: Select the desired ColorSync profile to match in the middle pop-up menu.

Step 3: Choose the Intent of the color profile conversion in the last pop-up menu. To better understand how these intents affect your conversion, the following is a brief summary of each intent:

  • If you want to use the default Intent, choose Automatic (most profiles have a default Intent specified by the vendor or creator).
  • If you want realistic-looking colors, as in photographs, choose Perceptual.
  • If you want to maintain color accuracy, as in logos, choose Relative Colorimetric.
  • If you want to maintain the vividness of colors, as in pie graphs and bar graphs, choose Saturation.
  • If you’re using color spaces with different white points and want to adjust the colors to account for the difference, use Absolute.

Step 4: Click Apply to make the changes.

The ColorSync Utility modifies the pixels in the image to match the new color model and ColorSync profile (color values are converted), and then assigns the new ColorSync profile to the file. This workflow is a common color conversion method, translating color values from a source profile to a destination profile. This method can be used to perform common color conversions such as RGB to CMYK.
