Two Tools Are Better Than One

You may not need to open the Logic Pro Toolbox as often as you think. You can summon an alternate cursor tool just by holding down the Command key.

You can choose any tool as your alternate. Command-click on the desired item in the Toolbox and the cursor will temporarily change to that tool whenever you hold down the Command key. (If the alternate tool is already active, holding down the Command key does nothing.) Just release the Command key to return to the Pointer tool.

One especially powerful feature: the Command key tool is stored independently for each type of edit window. For example, you might use the Text tool as your secondary command in the Arrange window for quick region naming, but switch to the Pencil Tool in the Matrix window to create new notes.

More power tool tips:

  • If you own an Apple Mighty Mouse (or another mouse that supports right-clicking), you can use right-click to open the Toolbox. First, enable right-clicking in the mouse’s control panel. Next, select Preferences/Global from the Logic Pro menu. Click on the Editing tab. Select “Right Mouse Button Opens Toolbox.”
  • If you prefer to summon the Toolbox via key command (the default key assignment is “Esc”), you can assign right-click to a third tool. In the Editing tab of Global Preferences, enable “Right Mouse Button Is Assignable to a Tool.” Right-click on the desired tool and it will appear each time you right-click.
  • In the Arrange, Matrix Edit, and Score windows, holding down the Control key momentarily changes the cursor into the Zoom tool. (If you’re over a Region in the Arrange window, hold Control+Option.) That means you can have as many as four tools accessible via modifier keys!
