iPhoto is great for creating a quick slideshow that can be burned to a DVD, but if you want more control over how your images are presented, you can use iMovie. Although iMovie HD is primarily a tool for creating movies, it is also a great tool for creating your digital portfolio.

iMovie HD will let you enhance your digital portfolio with video effects and cinematic transitions. Your photos will come alive when you use the Ken Burns Effect to add motion to your photos, or when you add a smooth transition between your photos.

Create iMovie projects for widescreen and standard televisions

Some of your clients will have newer, widescreen televisions, and others will have older standard models. When you start your project in iMovie, click the disclosure triangle next to “Video format” and then choose DV or DV Widescreen from the pop-up menu. If you don’t know what type of TV your clients have, you can make two versions of your slideshow, and add both to your digital portfolio DVD.

Using the Ken Burns Effect

Some pictures can tell a story when you reveal a little at a time, or pan across the photo. Other photos speak for themselves when shown full screen. The Ken Burns Effect is on by default, so you can experiment with it until it’s just right. If you don’t want the effect applied to a photo, deselect the Ken Burns Effect option.
