Proportional Trimming of All Automation Data

Sometimes it’s helpful to trim or boost the levels of all the breakpoint nodes in a track’s automation while maintaining their relative settings. Here’s how.

First, make sure that track automation is displayed by selecting “Track Automation” from the Arrange window’s View menu.

Place the cursor over the little “fader” in the track header, immediately to the left of the first region. While pressing the Command key, drag up or down. All the track’s breakpoint values change simultaneously. In Picture 2 we dragged the fader down until the first breakpoint node value had been lowered by -2 dB. All the other breakpoints were trimmed accordingly.

Another handy move: If you hold down the Option key while adjusting an individual node, every subsequent node value changes proportionately. In the picture below, we clicked on the node that falls near the second beat of bar three and trimmed it by -21 dB.

Note that all the values from bar 3 on have been trimmed, while those in bars 1 and 2 remain unchanged.
