Winners of the 2006 Apple Design Awards for Best Mac OS X Scientific Computing Solution

”Mek en Tosj.” Because of their devotion to their favorite computer, Griekspoor and Groothuis were dubbed “Mek” and “Tosj’ by colleagues. “Mekentosj” mimics the sound of the word “Macintosh” in Dutch.

Every year at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple presents the Apple Design Awards (ADA) to recognize technical excellence and outstanding achievement in software development on the Mac OS X platform.

This year’s winner and runner-up in the category of Best Mac OS X Scientific Computing Solution include a team of enterprising molecular biologists from Amsterdam who were tired of digging through catalogs for details, and a 26-year-old Canadian software engineer who envisioned a better way to provide sound advice.

Created using free development tools that come bundled with Mac OS X, each of their award-winning applications is elegant in its conceptual simplicity, yet each works to solve a highly sophisticated set of scientific problems.

Here are their inspiring stories:
