Find out what discoveries Pardis is making with infectious diseases and about her lab's numerous collaborations to investigate worldwide genetic diversity. She'll share her take on the connection between science and music and what's in store for her alternative rock band, "Thousand Days".
Dr. Pardis Sabeti, Harvard University
Pardis Sabeti is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Center for Systems Biology at Harvard University and an associate member of the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Mass., where she specializes in evolutionary genetics. Sabeti earned her Ph.D. in biological anthropology at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar in 2002 and obtained an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 2006, becoming the third woman to graduate with highest honors from the program.
Currently, she is studying the effect of natural selection on the human genome and the genomes of other organisms to uncover how humans and other species have adapted to their surroundings over time. At the Sabeti Lab located at Harvard University, computational methods and genomics are used to understand mechanisms of evolutionary adapatation in humans and pathogens.
About Thousand Days
In her spare time, Sabeti enjoys performing with her band Thousand Days, whose new self-titled CD is now playing on college radio stations across the country. This Boston-based alternative rock band's latest self-titled CD is a compilation of songs by world-class producers Neil Mclellan, Paul Kimble, and Anthony Resta. They have had their music spun on over 50 college radio stations and Boston's great WBCN, and played throughout New England. The band has been written up or showcased in Performer Magazine, CNN.com, the Boston Globe, Voice of America Nova Sciencenow, and Science Magazine, the latter due to lead singer Pardis Sabeti's second life as an M.D. Ph.D., Harvard Professor studying genomics and infectious disease. Sabeti's day job does not stop the band, with Bob Katsiaficas on guitar, Matt Hayden on drums, and Dave Rand on bass, giving up a pure alternative rock sonic experience in their latest CD.
