Real-time Design Engine
In the past, only dedicated hardware systems could achieve real-time interactivity. Motion significantly reduces the barrier to real-time by drawing on the power of the Power Mac G5 running Mac OS X Panther. Motion lets you preview filters, effects and animation in real-time, so you work more intuitively and interactively toward an optimal creative result.
Behavior Animation
Keyframe animation is ideal for defining precise paths and timing, but sometimes you need to create organic and spontaneous movement thats difficult or too time-consuming to achieve using keyframe techniques. Behaviors, an alternative to keyframe animation, let you add natural-looking movement to type and graphics with just a few clicks. Motion comes with more than 40 unique behaviors divided into four types: basic, text, simulation and parameter behaviors.
High-Quality Titles
Motion uses system fonts to create high-quality, vector-based stretch, skew, rotate and resize effects. Take advantage of preset type styles that come with Motion, or use the Dashboard to quickly set font, opacity, color and blend modes. Use the Inspector to add advanced effects such as outline, glow, shadow or to change layout options.
Animated LiveFonts
Designed by professional animators, LiveFonts are new kinds of animated font. You type them just as you would using a system font, but they offer built-in animated effects such as fire and shiny metal. Theyre created in 32-bit alpha channel so they key right over video. Motion comes with 10 ready-to-use LiveFonts.
Fast Filters
Motion comes with over 90 accelerated filters in 12 categories. Filters include familiar types such as Gaussian blurs, distortion effects and glows, as well as more exotic filters, such as kaleidoscope and tunnel. Simply drag and drop a filter onto an object to see its result instantly. Motion also includes the Photron PrimatteRT keyer for creating specialized blue- and green-screen effects.
Particle Generator
Motions advanced particle generator offers total creative control as well as popular simulation presets effects such as smoke, sparkles and fire. Select almost any object as a particle, apply multiple objects to a single particle emitter or combine particle emitters with behaviors for advanced effects.
Shape Drawing Tools
Motion simplifies drawing simple or complex shapes by offering efficient, easy-to-use Bezier and B-Spline tools. You can fill shapes with a color or gradient and add an independent outline and feathering. For compositing shapes over other shapes or video, you can use standard blend modes in tandem with opacity controls.

Behaviors
Basic
Basic behaviors are the simplest kind, letting you create movement by altering basic parameters such as position, rotation and opacity. For example, add fade-in/fade-out or spin to any object or combine basic behaviors to create more complex animations.
Text
Text behaviors, specialized for titling, affect lines, words or individual letters independently. Use the drop-bounce or type-on behavior to create a letter-by-letter title effect. Choose the crawl or scroll-up behavior to move larger blocks of text in unison. Combine effects and behaviors to build unique and sophisticated titles in a fraction of the time it would take using keyframes.
Simulation
Simulations are advanced behaviors designed to simulate real-world phenomena such as gravity and vortex. Other simulation behaviors create eco-systems of movement among multiple objects. For example, add the attract or repel behavior to a single object to create sophisticated interactions in a minimal amount of time.
Parameter
Parameter behaviors offer fine control of any object parameter without altering other parameters. For example, if you apply the oscillate behavior to an objects opacity parameter, the object rhythmically fades in and out without changing position. The same behavior applied to the rotation parameter, however, causes the object to rock back and forth, with no impact on opacity.
Animating Titles
Text on a Path
Use the Inspector Layout tab to define a path for type to animate along. Once the path is defined, you can reshape it using Bezier controls. Interactively set the offset for instant titling animation.
Text Behaviors
Use text behaviors to create complex animated title sequences in a fraction of the time it would normally take. Text behaviors can add letter-by-letter animations such as drop-bounce or type-on or move an entire block of text in unison.
