USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter

  • Overview

The USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter lets you connect your MacBook with USB-C port to a VGA display, while also connecting a standard USB device and a USB-C charging cable.

The USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter allows you to mirror your MacBook display to your VGA-enabled TV or display in up to 1080p HD. It also outputs video content like films and captured video. Simply connect the adapter to the USB-C port on your MacBook and then to your TV or projector via a VGA cable (sold separately).

Use the standard USB port to connect devices such as your flash drive or camera, or a USB cable for syncing and charging your iPhone, iPad or iPod. You can also connect a charging cable to the USB-C port to charge your MacBook.

Note: The Apple USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter is not compatible with the G-Tech G-DRIVE mobile USB 3.0 Hard Drive (Apple part number HF4F2VC/A).

Several months later, I see I was correct, but two major gripes remain: 1) charging through the adaptor is very slow. While it seems like power in should be close to power out, less a little lost along the way, in fact my laptop needs a couple hours longer to charge through the adaptor. 2) data rate: I use an external hard drive and have compared running a USB portable hard drive through the simple USB-A/USB-C adaptor and through this multipart adaptor. Using the simple cable, the data throughput rate is very high. Through the multiport adaptor, it is very, very slow. I would use the simpler cable, but the charge on the laptop does not make it through a full backup, since the HD is also drawing some power. All told, I am glad to have the laptop, but am experiencing some of the regret of an early adopter.

Two different USB disk drives plugged into the adapter never show up in Finder, so I cannot back up or save things to a flash drive. This is only a month after I acquired it. Also, the adapter runs hot. Something is wasting a lot of power.

It would be nice to either have Apple list monitors they have tested with their products or update the graphics driver to display proper external monitor calibration. If you are opting for a multipart adapter buy the HDMI one as long as your monitor supports HDMI which most newer TVs, Monitors and projectors do.

For some currently unknown reason, the video on an external monitor glitches periodically to a low resolution and the only way to reset it is to change the resolution to some other value and then back to best for monitor setting. I have found it best to not use this adapter with external USB drives of any kind. Sometimes the drive decides to unmount in the middle of a read or write operation--Not good for data integrity or drive performance. The biggest negative is that there are no documented alternatives that do not have similar poor reviews. I guess this line of netbooks, oh, sorry, premium Apple notebooks with USB-C really isn't meant to be used with any external peripherals ... other than a charger and a set of ... headphones ...

I nee Bought this genuine product after having tried a cheaper alternative that didn't work well with many monitors; unfortunately this is not much better! I needed it to perform with a VGA projector this morning to show a PowerPoint presentation to a client and the screen kept going black then coming back on. It's done this before with other devices and when in use the image doesn't always fill the connected screen correctly when using in second monitor, rather than mirrored mode (mirrored is worse as the adaptor often defaults devices to 800x 600! Yes, before someone asks I'm fully up to date with drivers etc. and the same screens and devices all work seamlessly with my old MacBook Air and apple VGA adaptors. Yes I've tried various settings to correct issues without success. This is a major problem as with a new MacBook I've no other way of connecting screens and projectors that don't have a HDMI output. If Apple support read this I'd be happy to hear their views as to why this product appears so flawed, and how I can get these issues addressed given it is soooo expensive!

      Poor quality - uninspiring design - a reluctant 'must-have'

I have a sleek aluminium Macbook with this piece of white plastic sticking out of it. The VGA adapter is the only way to guarantee a connection to most screens I have a sleek aluminium Macbook with this piece of white plastic sticking out of it. The VGA adapter is the only way to guarantee a connection to most screens without having to carry a pocket full of similar very expensive adapters. Couldn't the gurus of Apple come up with something that at least looks as if it was designed to go on a Macbook? Technically not very good - My new Apple DVD USB drive has had issues drawing enough power from the single USB socket And it has now broken - the VGA still works but power does not go through it. It is only a couple of months old. A very poorly designed expensive product.
