Had mine for around 18mo, no problems.

Works fine, no issues with reading/burning DVDs on my 15" MBP Retina. It definitely doesn't work well with cheap DVD blank media, has to use B-grade or higher. Can't use it with a hub, must be plugged in directly. Overall, a solid little box that does its job. Low review ratings are confusing as it's rated well elsewhere online.

    Patience is a Virtue

Because of the less-than-stellar reviews, I was wary about buying Apple's USB SuperDrive. But I own an iMac desktop, MacBook Pro laptop, iPhone 6, and several iPads and iPods. What other external drive would I buy?

I had the same issue as many of the reviewers. The first disc I tried to insert, tax software, immediately popped back out. I tried a music CD and had the same result. I called Apple tech support and the problem was solved by shutting down, unplugging the power cord for 15 seconds, plugging the power cord back in and restarting. After that procedure, I successfully installed the tax software without issue, and I'm listening to a music CD as I write this review.

I have always been a Mac person and while I'm disappointed a problem exists, I'm happy the problem was so easily solved. There is a definitely an issue with the drive that deserves a look from the engineers and designers, so I cannot give a 5-star rating. So far, it's working as expected, so I feel a 4-star rating is fair.

    DUMB

I finally gave up and bought a Samsung external DVD burner that ACTUALLY HAS AN EJECT BUTTON!!!!!!!!! And discs don't get trapped in it with no way to eject them. What a piece of garbage this Superdrive was. I can understand minimalistic and clean but Apple, really? C'mon. You put a disc in something, it's going to get stuck. Give me an eject button at least, don't make me use keyboard buttons and terminal commands that don't work 95% of the time. And this thing was SOOOOOOOOOOOO slow. The Samsung one rocks and is super quick. And I HATE all things Samsung. That's saying something.

Don't purchase - This drive is a dud!

I own a LOT of Apple products - I'm a big supporter and I do all of my work on Apple products. We purchased this drive in 2016 and it has never worked! The disc DOES NOT mount, and the drive NEVER ejects the disc properly. Luckily we don't need to use many discs anymore but on the rare occasion i give it a try and it has NEVER worked! Im still an Apple user/supporter but this drive is a BIG disappointment.

    More plain than super

I purchased this item when I got my iMac and right off the nit I regretted this purchase

First off the cable is only 6 inches long. Ideal for a laptop but silly for an iMac

Second as the SuperDrive needs power you cannot use a USB hub to connect or even the Thinderbolt adapter to connect the SuperDrive. Given how iMacs only have 4 USB ports the SuperDrive is not a flexible accessory.

Third it doses not play bluray only CD and DVDs and for get HD discs as well. Given how we are at the point that 4K disc are out there it seems silly not to have bluray

    Very disappointed purchase.

    SuperDrive has been super

This drive was purchased to compliment a 13" mid-2012 Macbook Air. It has never faltered. I see the bad reviews, and if I had read them before purchasing this item, I may have bought a LiteOn. I have not burned or read a dual-layer disk, but this drive apparently will do that. It does not do LightScribe, which I kind of miss, but my printer will do printable disks, which is even better. So, for me, this drive has worked perfectly well.

Not durable and impossible if a disc gets stuck

We have purchased and feel stuck with this disc drive. Our children have jammed the disc drive 2x and both times the drive broke due to the disc jam. This is something that happens all the time with littles and its amazing how Apple has not problem solved this major flaw. There is no way to forcibly eject a disc, and if the Geniuses end up opening it up to get the discs out, the drive is toast. It only comes with a 12 month warranty so after 1 year your $80 drive is trash.

    Rubbish - avoid

Bought because I would have expected Apple quality to be better than this and worth a premium. Unfortunately it reads no better than 1 in 2 discs and takes an age to import. It's useless. Have persisted over last few months as I need it on relatively few occasions but am now going to junk it. No use if every time it's 50/50 whether it will work or not. Going with an alternative off amazon.

    Awful!

I just bought this item a couple of days ago because I was in need of uploading pictures to my macbook air. While trying to upload, this product would not work whatsoever. I'm highly disappointed because I just wasted $80 on something I needed.

    Don't believe the bad hype!

Debated buying one of these for months, read all the reviews. Bought a samsung model and tried it out and it was impossibly slow to transfer a file on to my macbook air. Bought the Apple superdrive and it is the same speed as when the cd drive was part of the laptop. A massive difference. Totally worth the extra money to save on time and frustration when using other external hard drive - or at least the one that I compared it to which was about half way between the cheapest and most expensive models. My only feedback to Apple would be that the connecting port should be thunderbolt instead of usb.

    You live and you learn

Even if I had read the NEGATIVE reviews for the Apple USB drive,
I still bought the USB Drive 2 years ago with my 2015-27 inch iMac,
I must of used my drive at most 40 times since,
I unplugged it in October when the MotherBoard of my 2015-27 inch iMac died...
now my USB SuperDrive is dead, (and was probably for a while, but went unnoticed)...

Bottom line, this drive isn't reliable, and overpriced.

I won't be buying another Apple Super Drive.

Disappointed that Apple would sell this unreliable product!

This product is totally useless. worked at first then died with a new dvd in it. The most ridiculous thing is that they wanted me to bring in my Macbook Pro and the USB drive and leave them in the store for a few days so they could try to eject the dvd.

I own an I Pad, I Phone and the MacBook Pro which are superior products.

WHAT HAPPENED? Why sell this inferior product?

Reads and writes CD and DVD

I used the USB Superdrive on my MacBook Pro 2014 and on my MacBook Pro 2016 using a USB C to A converter. It works fine. If you want to read CD's or DVD that were written to by other computers or you want to burn either CD or DVD's, this device will do it. You have to be patient because it doesn't read or write quickly. On the other hand, it is very reliable and hardy. I had another one that I used for many years but misplaced it and therefore had to buy this one to replace it. You can play commercial CD's and DVD's but be careful because some CD or DVD from a different regions of the world will not play on your computer and, although you can shift regions, you can only do it a few times. I have used it to read my music CD's into iTunes and played movies from DVD.

    Apple USB SuperDrive

This device works great for a while, but for some unknown reason be it my computer or the software being used, this device works great with DVD Player when playing movies but does not work when importing CDs with iTunes. So overall I say a solid 3.5 stars.

Not recognized by MacBook Pro anymore

I don't use this very often. Tried to use it today. MacBook Pro (only 3yrs old) won't even recognize it anymore. Received this as a gift when I got the MacBook Pro since the disc reader/writer is no longer integrated into the laptop. Can't believe this!

    Nothing 'super' about it...

I bought the superdrive as an essential piece of kit to accompany my Macbook pro (2015 model) as it did not have a built-in drive. The main reason I decided to pay the premium, the best part of £80, was the fact it was an Apple product - a brand I was familiar with and so far had not let me down. Unfortunately this drive is very temperamental, sometimes I have to load a CD into the drive multiple times before it works at all. Sometimes it takes 2 hours to import a single CD and even this is not done correctly as only 30 seconds of the CD gets imported.

Apple has moved away from built-in drives and my Macbook pro is amazing. However as apple moves away from USB slots ect., and we have to buy these add ons I expect them to at least work. My confidence in the brand and the products has been severely knocked and its hard to to feel cheated out of so much money.

I was lured in by the brand and the attractive design but thats all this have to offer, my advice would be to buy a cheaper drive that actually works and spend the rest of the money saved on more CD's!
