LaCie 1TB Rugged Portable Hard Drive - Thunderbolt and USB 3.0

  • Overview

LaCie’s Rugged external hard drive now offers lightning-fast speeds of USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt, and full compatibility with USB 2.0. Its shock-proof design protects the device from accidental drops and has an IP 54-rated resistance to the elements. With an integrated Thunderbolt cable and universal compatibility, this drive gives you the best of durability, mobility, and performance.

    About Thunderbolt

Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices via one simple port and a cable that carries both DisplayPort and PCI Express data. And it’s standard on every Mac.

PCI Express is the technology that links all the high-performance components in a Mac. And it’s built into Thunderbolt, which means you can get PCI Express speed outside the box.

Thunderbolt gives you up to 10 Gbps in both directions, allowing for super-fast data transfer between peripherals. You also have enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch.

Thunderbolt also provides double the power of USB 3.0, delivering 10 watts to peripherals for improved performance on the go.

USB Connection to MacBook Pro drops

Stunning. I bought this unit to maintain my Photos libraries, but it randomly looses its connection which then crashes Photos. Unworkable.

      Don't buy this drive!

I was excited when they came out with a 1TB drive with Thunderbolt and bought one without hesitation. One really minor drop and it was dead and unsalvageable. The rubber protection was useless in a drop of less than 18inches from coffee table to floor. And LaCie customer service was worse than useless. Essentially they told me "tough luck, nothing we can do". So I took it back to the Apple Store which was super. They gave me a full refund and I bought a G-Tech 1TB Thunderbolt drive and have never looked back. I'm done with LaCie, more for their attitude than for the poorly designed drive.

      No Apple Formatting Encryption

This drive does not allow MacOS encryption when formatting it. It requires downloading special software to encrypt data. So, I'm sending mine back.

      Absolute nightmare

"Rugged"? Not a chance. I used it purely as an archive drive, i.e. copied files to it and put it away in a safe place. When the critical day came that I needed "Rugged"? Not a chance. I used it purely as an archive drive, i.e. copied files to it and put it away in a safe place. When the critical day came that I needed to restore lost data, the drive was corrupt. 100% data loss. Appears to be a hardware failure, as I can't even erase the device successfully. From the looks of the reviews, I'm not the first. Plus, the warranty expired a few months ago. Total waste of money, time, and it left me feeling burned. I will never trust a LaCie (or Seagate for that matter) product again.

Does not live up to the hype.

I bought this 'device at a Mac Store because I bought into the branding. A 'rugged' hard drive sounded good because I knew that I am accident prone. Within one I bought this 'device at a Mac Store because I bought into the branding. A 'rugged' hard drive sounded good because I knew that I am accident prone. Within one month, my device feel about 1 meter from a chair as I was running time machine. Completely ruined it. Now I feel like a sucker. The box said that this could withstand drops 'up to' 2 meters. I guess I should have read more carefully. Don't buy into the advertising, and don't buy the LaCie Rugged Portable Hard Drive if you're hoping for a device that can withstand minor drops; it cannot do so reliably. I would have been better off shelling out a third of the price for a normal hard drive considering how 'rugged' this proved to be in practice.
