    Thunderbolt 2

Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices via one simple port and a cable that carries both DisplayPort and PCI Express data. And it’s standard on every Mac.

PCI Express is the technology that links all the high-performance components in a Mac. And it’s built into Thunderbolt, which means you can get PCI Express speed outside the box.

With Thunderbolt 2 now built into the new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro with Retina display, you can connect up to three 4K displays at once. Thunderbolt 2 gives you up to 20 Gbps in both directions, allowing for super-fast data transfer between peripherals. You also have enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch.

Thunderbolt also provides double the power of USB 3.0, delivering 10 watts to peripherals for improved performance on the go.

      Simplicity at hand

Purchased the Belkin Thunderbolt 2 Express HD as soon as it was available via the Belkin website. Knowing already it could NOT drive two displays UNLESS one was via HDMI, I plugged all my USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt devices, rebooted my iMac and voilà, all recognized IMMEDIATELY and the USB 3.0 speeds are finally up to par. Hard drives are recognized immediately, there is no disconnection (meaning nothing gets "unmounted" on its own or by the OS) and the audio ports (Microphone and Headphones) are easily managed via the System Preferences under Sound. It is also possible to switch the output by using Option+Click to open the Volume Icon on the bar: the Hub's audio driver is listed automatically and easily recognized as it's listed as USB Audio Codec. This is deadly simple and it simply works. Expensive? A bit but not much difference with the only 2 other Thunderbolt 2 hubs available in the market. More likely going to get another one soon so that I can drive all my devices through two Thunderbolt 2 hubs.

      Perfect

USB 3.0 ports are never enough (I already had two hubs in chain.) but with this became enough. Easily handles my Pro Tools HDX card in a MAGMA box, from there a 24" Dell via Thunderbolt/DVI adapter, another HD monitor via HDMI, and I can connect the ethernet cable of my synth too. I would use a FW800 port, but so far this hub is my smartest "investment" in this year!

I was excited when I purchased the dock, its well made feels solid and looks very sleek, however for my usecase I was quickly dissapointed, admittedly I should have paid closer attention but the device does NOT give any extra thunderbolt ports as one of the two ports pictured must be used as the uplink to the laptop leaving you with exactly the same number thunderbolt ports as you would have without the device. $430AUD is too much money for essentially a couple of extra USB ports. Luckily Apple took the device back no questions asked. A $15 DVI to HDMI connector and a $30 Belking usb hub did the job for me. 30" Inch Apple cinema, 27" Dell, CD Rom Drive, External Firewire drives, web cam, usb mic, apple watch, iphone all connected! but stll a mess. :( the sarch for a thunderbolt hub continues.....

      It works!

All USB 3.0 ports are performing at top speeds (simultaneous usage), audio is fine and I manage to drive a Dell P2715Q at 2160 (@60Hz) through the HDMI port with great results! I would give it 5 stars if it wouldn't get so hot and if the thunderbolt cable did not feel kind of loose connected to my Macbook pro retina.

Unfortunately, you're writing: "One HDMI port supports up to 4K cinema resolution" - yes, 4K BUT 30 Hz refreshing, anyway for watching a movie... Minimal value for monitor it's a 60Hz. Which version of HDMI contains this Dock 2 of Belkin - v1.4 or 2.0? Better for you if client doesn't know for what pay in Europe with TAX about 400 Eur. It is NOT honest practice! Do you understand why is so important to inform about ALL PARAMETERS? I think, no, you don't.
