Audeze EL-8 Titanium Closed-Back Headphones

  • Overview

The first to offer a fully integrated Lightning connector for your iPhone, the Audeze EL-8 Titanium Closed-Back headphones deliver superb sound quality for all the music on your iOS devices. This superior performance for both your music and voice calls is possible thanks to the headphone amplifier and 24-bit DAC built into the Lightning cable. Plus you continue to get the benefits of the special planar magnetic driver derived from Audeze's top-of-the-line LCD Series headphones.

The EL-8 model gives you a lifelike listening experience with an extended frequency response that opens up a new breadth of sound. Its driver is four times larger than most other headphones and gives excellent bass response along with extremely low distortion. To match the EL-8's impressive audio, its industrial design is by BMW’s DesignWorks. And durable aluminum construction ensures that you'll have lasting enjoyment.

    Better technology, better sound

By using a planar magnetic driver instead of a cone-type speaker, the EL-8 offers exceptional transient response and extended bass—virtually flat to 25Hz—along with the lowest Total Harmonic Distortion. These qualities help put you “right there” with the artist.

      Amazing Planar Magnetic Headphones

I have had the opportunity to purchase these headphones as my first pair of planar magnetic headphones. They come with the lighting cable and also a 3.5mm plug I have had the opportunity to purchase these headphones as my first pair of planar magnetic headphones. They come with the lighting cable and also a 3.5mm plug. I thought that I would have wanted the open back version of the EL-8's however I jumped on the option for the titanium closed since it came with the lighting cable and Audeze does not sell them on their site right now. The listening experience is fantastic and very welcoming. The closed-back compared to the open-back has a little less of a full dynamic sound. Maybe on the scale of 1-100. I would give it a 93. With the open-back being 96 or 97. However, with the Audeze app that you download when you first connect the lighting cable form the Audeze in the iOS device, You have the option to adjust the EQ according to your listen experience and with just a a couple of very tiny adjustments I was able to manipulate that difference. Of Course I will have those that will doubt me on this. Thats okay, I know my own ears better than they do ◕‿◕. I am currently using them with a O2+ODAC (revB) DAC/Amplifier and also have tried out the Grace Design x Massdrop m9XX DAC/Amp. When using the 3.5mm plug to the amps. These headphones come alive more so than my brand new Beyerdynamic DT1770 Pro's that were just released a couple months back. The Quality that is pushed through without an amp is impressive. But with an Amp. They are Beautiful. Audeze, I believe, has outdone themselves with the new technology they have put into these headphones. They are a new Neodymium Fluxor magnets. I would google or youtube that to understand a little more about those. They are different than the LCD-3's but for the price. They are well worth it! I have had not issues with paint chipping off or any blemishes either. I would have to say they are a little heavier than my other headphones that I have though, But with the design and the parts that are used. I believe that is expected. I am very happy with these headphones and would recommend them to those that are serious about audio and are entering the audiophile community or are looking for a less expensive higher end audiophile headphone. These are the cheapest Planar Magnetic headphones that I know of that are out there!

At $800+ I had the initial sticker shock and wasn't completely convinced I'd end up keeping them. I'm DEFINITELY KEEPING THEM. These are hands down the greatest sound out of the iPhone up to date. Period. I've had my 6 Plus since the day they were released and shortly after began using the lightning port for listening to music. It was a huge improvement over the analog jack. The EL-8 Titanium just took it to a whole different level. I had previously used the lightning-->usb splitter-->amp/dac-->headphone trick to circumvent the iPhone from thinking the amp was drawing any power, which was shaky at best and eventually stopped working for me after one of the recent updates. I knew this must've meant the powers that be were about to release some hardware that they deemed appropriate. What an understatement that was. This is the ultimate paradigm shift for the iPhone. The moment you dial them into whatever your favorite tracks are, you immediately realize you have to go and listen to everything over again. That's how much of a difference they make. The cypher cable and app are truly state of the art. The EQ works regardless of what app you're listening to (Spotify & Tidal FLAC never sounded better). Comparable to listening off the usb from my macbook pro. Yes. I just wrote that. I know you may not believe me, so go take a listen. You'll see. You need to hear these. There's absolutely nothing else that comes even close for the iPhone.

      Poor quality finish, good sound

Ordered a pair as soon as they were released and was excited to pick them up from a local Apple Store. Listened to them briefly. Great range and soundstage. Sup Ordered a pair as soon as they were released and was excited to pick them up from a local Apple Store. Listened to them briefly. Great range and soundstage. Suprisingly bass-heavy but with some distortion. I may have been able to to flatten this with the Audeze app and better, lossless source files. However, I had to return them almost immediately because, upon removing the protective packing tape from the headband, the paint/anodised finished stripped off with the tape. Hardly what you expect from a ~$1000 set of cans. May re-purchase once Audeze has worked out what looks like a production/QA issues with the early units.

      Incredible audio performance

I've tried some Audeze EL-8 Titanium takes portable audio to a totally different level. There are a variety of good headphones on the market, ready for iPhone. I've tried some of them, and there are some good products out there, but they are absolutely no match with the EL-8. The sound stage is exceptionally large (also considering that they are closed back), high frequency are very well defined and the bass is powerful and precise. To me, there are really no cons to mention: they are awesome at home, and great for travel and walking around. I have been using them extensively with no issue so far. The only little improvement might be to include a carrying case in the package (even at a slightly higher price) to avoid having to buy it separately. But it's also true that this would increase the overall size of the packaging, and that, once ordered the carrying case from Audeze, it arrived in a couple of days.
