  • Best Answer:

Size and compatibility. The 85w is larger/heavier than the 45w. The 85w will adapt to be used with a lower power computer (ie. the MacBook Air), but it was intended for use with the MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

  • The 45W is meant for the MacBook Air and the 85W is for the MacBook Pro with Retina Display. The built-in 95-watt-hour battery in the Pro and the 50 in the Air each have different chargers.

  • Power adapters for Apple notebooks are available in 29W, 45W, 60W, and 85W varieties. You should use the appropriate wattage power adapter for your Apple notebook. You can use a compatible higher wattage adapter without issue, but it won't make your computer charge faster or operate differently. Lower wattage adapters will not provide enough power."

ie if you have a mac air and a mac pro laptop, you can not use the 45w on both machines - just the mac air.
if you have a 85w you can use it on any mac pro /air laptop ( besides the newer usb C type )
the size of the block is slightly larger going up in wattage.
