2 plus year old version. We have the iPad 2 AND just bought the iPad Air. Air has retina display. Operates a little bit faster and the screen resolution is better than the iPad 2. We've had the iPad 2 for almost 3 years now, and I still use it every day. So long as you update the software, you should be fine. If I were going to buy one today, I'd buy the Air for the latest technology; if I could get a great deal and money was an issue, I'd have NO problem buying the iPad 2.
