Best computer for an illustration major/ video game design minor?
I'm starting my first year of college in a few months and I was looking into a new computer. At first I was looking into replacing my almost three year old MacBook, but one of my teachers suggested getting an iMac to have in addition to my MacBook, and using the Macbook for when I need a computer in class, and having a faster and more powerful desk top at my dorm.
I'm majoring in illustration, planing on minoring in video game design and will be running the full adobe creative suit on the machine, which I cannot currently do on mine, plus whatever programs I may need when I start my minor.
I'm torn between the base model MacBook Pro and the base model iMac. I would up the RAM to 16gb on either one after purchasing, and replace the pro hard drive to a SSD on my own.
My two main concerns are the difference in the graphic quality in the two machines and the possibility that if I purchase the iMac instead of replacing my current computer, my MacBook might need to be replaced in the next year or two, which I probably wouldn't be able to afford.
Which option would be the most cost effective, best for my needs, and last the longest?

I don't know what you are wanting, but have you thought about buying a new MacBook Pro and buying a Mac Mini, you'll just need a monitor or TV with VGA or HDMI port to get the mac mini up and running.
