The Macbook air does not have a built in dvd drive, so if you need to install software you need an external DVD drive, or there is a feature where you can "borrow" a DVD drive from another Mac or PC if it is on your home network. However, if you need to transfer software from your old mac to a new one, I believe that you can use migration assistant to transfer your your applications and files to your new Mac if they are on the same network, or are connected by a firewire cable. You can do this without a DVD drive.
