Hi there, I'm a Graphic Design student myself, and I recommend getting either the 15 inch or the 17 inch (depending on your screen size preference). This is because the 15 and 17 inches offer the AMD Radeon HD 6570 and HD 6770 graphic cards and the 13 inch doesn't. These cards take over heavier processes from the normal Intel HD Graphics 3000 which is default built into all the Macbook Pros. So that means when your laptop detects a process that is beyond the default's memory capacity, it will automatically switch to the Radeon card, and switch back to your Intel when you are doing basic jobs on the laptop. It also depends on what type of Graphic Design you are doing. For me, I would definitely purchase anything with a better graphics card as in the later years of college/ university, you will find projects that require higher processing from your laptop.

Just a personal opinion though, I would get the cheaper 15 inch unless you need an extra 250 GB of space or a slightly faster processor. It's not worth the extra $400 if you are going to use an external monitor when you're at home though.
