Cool idea, problematic execution: there are better alternatives

    • Written by from Brooklyn

My wife and I were really happy with our Apple wireless keyboards and trackpads except for the amount of battery waste we were producing. We wanted to go greener and loved the idea of this Mobee solution. Bought the charger and two battery packs for each of us, plus a spare, and have used them for a year and a half. Sorry to say but now we have given up on these.

The main problem is that you can't charge the battery packs unless they are physically in the keyboard or trackpad. Ours also didn't hold a charge all that long. As a result, when one of the battery packs dies on you in the middle of your workday, which happens frequently, you're stuck without a keyboard or trackpad until it's recharged.

The nail in the coffin was a problem that others have experienced as well: the charging cap of one of our battery packs just broke off when we were trying to unscrew it from the keyboard.

I'll be sending all this Mobee stuff off to our local electronics recycling outfit. Based on reviews, though, I hesitated to replace it with the batteries and recharger that Apple sells. Instead, we've taken delivery of a couple packs of the brand-new 4th generation Eneloop AA batteries, which are very well reviewed elsewhere, and the latest smart battery charger (Opus BT-C2400; if Apple made an attractive smart charger, I'd buy it, but they don't). I expect this solution will work out much better and also be a bit less expensive than this Mobee stuff. We will never get stuck without a charged keyboard or trackpad; we'll always have charged-up batteries on hand to stick in as soon as the juice is drained, so we can keep working.

    Great idea - bad product

    • Written by from Petersburg

I have the Mobee Magic Bar for my wireless mouse and love it. So, I thought why not the same thing for my wireless keyboard. Great idea, but the battery insert DOES NOT FIT! Item is in process of being returned. Apple should not endorse a product that DOES NOT FIT their products.

    Great idea but…

    • Written by from Ficulle

Poor battery performance and unreliable left battery indication.

Also, I tried to buy a spare battery and it was impossible to find one. All Apple shops will stock the Magic Bar but not spare batteries which means that when my battery dies I would need to buy the whole product again? No way, I am not making the same mistake twice….

    Excellent battery solution

    • Written by from Leesburg

I bought the Magic Bar after buying and being very satisfied with the Magic Mouse charger. I get about two weeks of use from the keyboard. Once I came into the office on a Monday only to find the keyboard was dead. I just put it into the Magic Bar charger, pulled it close for use and went about my day. The keyboard charged while I used it and afterward I was able to go back to wireless keying!

I saw complains about fit from a couple of reviewers. Be aware that Apple produced two versions of the wireless keyboard and they have different housings. Mobee makes batteries for both, so check which keyboard you have and order appropriately. IIRC the later battery pack is slightly smaller which accounts for the problems described. I suspect they did not call Mobee to get assistance which could have revealed this issue.

The product is truly outstanding. It matches the Apple finish and is odor free. And it's a conversation starter sitting on my desk. :-)

My two main complaints are that Mobee does not provide a charger, expecting you to use the USB on your computer. But when the computer is off, no charging takes place, so a minimum 2 amp charger is needed. I had plugged mine into a powered USB hub but it didn't have enough amperage to charge the batteries in the stated time. The other complaint I have is the positioning of the charge indicator LED. It is not visible from the normal position, but rotating the bar toward me about 90 degrees does show it clearly. I don't know if this is simply a problem with my unit or if the LED is always in the wrong position, but it's inconvenient to find the charge status. Hence the rating of 4.

Why this should be disconnected & what is better

    • Written by from Winnipeg

    1. Buy the Apple rechargeable battery charger kit which includes 6aa NiMH batteries for 29.99CAD. You then have batteries for the keyboard, mouse and trackpad... The batteries charge in same amount of time, they will provide much longer run time, they can be charged many more times, and they will stay charged longer even if the devices are not in use (time between charges is months).

    2. This product costs twice as much, yet only includes 2 batteries.. Also the batteries are NiCD - which are out-dated, they perform horribly, they lose charge in less than a week just sitting around even when not inserted in a device, at best when fully charged you get 6 hours runtime... Seriously? Discontinue this product please.

    Battery does not fit

    • Written by from Phoenix

I thought this was going to be a great product, but I got it and the battery doesn't even fit in the threading of my keyboard and the battery is a whole AA battery size too short even reaching the connector for the keyboard. A waste of money. I am now out that money versus the "savings" on my batteries. DON'T BUY.

    Great Idea, only fair execution

    • Written by from Cherry Hills Village

Unlike other reviewers, I found the battery fit fine. But it took some experimentation (and requires ongoing care) to "dock" it .... putting it in "all the way" results in no charging. It has to be a couple of cm off to get it to charge.

Also it never seems to get to full charge, since it's always blinking green--never solid (but perhaps that's because no one else in the family but me can find the proper spot to dock it).

I've thought of trying to retrofit a rubber washer to allow for easy docking; but at this price level I'd expected it to "just work".

    Easy and Green

    • Written by from Sherman Oaks

A friend gave this to me as a gift and I love it. I am sure that I would have burned through 40 or so batteries over the past year since I have had it. Just split the keyboard into the slot when I am leaving my desk for the night (about once a week) and you are ready to go in the morning. Nice green product. Looks good on the desk.

    Works perfectly for me

    • Written by from STEVENSVILLE

I use my wireless keyboard all day 5 days a week. This product has worked perfectly for me. Keyboard is always fully charged. Just insert it back into the bar when you are not using it, or leave it in the bar and use it when you don't mind being "wired".

Simple to use, trivial to install, and no more using rechargeable batteries. We will have to wait and see how many cycles these batteries go through, however! As another review mentioned, you need an additional battery ($30) if you also want to use the charging bar with a trackpad. The Apple store does not care the additional batteries, you must order them directly from Mobee.

BTW, there is an excellent battery widget (Mighty Monitor) on dashboard that can display the wireless battery charges. It is nice to always see my keyboard fully charged. As soon as I can get a spare battery, it is going in my trackpad!

Works as described and keeps the keyboard charged to 100%. Battery pack was easy to install and fit as expected. Worked right out of the box. There was no need to wait for it to charge for hours.

    Mobee magic bar keyboard Wonderful!!!

    • Written by from roseville

I got this product with low hopes and expectations. I took it out of the box and wasn't impressed at all. I started to use it and it is easy to set up and charges fast. You need to charge it with an outlet of some sorts but other then that mobee did an excellent job with this product i haven't had one problem with it

Nice product, but a bit pricey for the non pro user.

    • Written by from Toronto

I received the Magic bar as a gift. I own a wireless keyboard, and a magic trackpad. I had to go and buy another battery as the until only ships with one. So, you're looking at $60 for this unit, plus another $30 for the extra battery.

For a pro user, I can see the benefit of having the Magic Bar there to just dock your trackpad or keyboard each night to make sure that it's fresh for the next day. However, for a home user I think $90 is a lot to spend just to avoid the few seconds of hassle that it takes to replace rechargeable batteries.

For that money you could get a batter charger that also reconditions rechargeables to make sure that you get the maximum life out of them.

I'm no stranger to Apple sticker shock, but in this case I'd have to say that the product is really over priced for the benefit it brings you. $15-$20 cheaper, and it would have been something I would have considered buying for myself.

    No Regrets

    • Written by from Pittsford

I bought this on a whim at my local Apple store. As I use Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries, the concept of a permanent rechargeable battery cell for my bluetooth keyboard and trackpad seemed perfect. I utilize my Mac Pro system 6-8 hours/day and full charges last well over ten days. The small footprint for the USB powered charging bar is elegant enough to sit under my two 24" ACD LED LCD's. This eco-conscious and efficient system has allowed me to ditch my Eneloop's without hindering my workflow.

The only caveat is the one battery supplied. I had to purchase an additional battery directly from Mobee for my wireless keyboard. Otherwise, no complaints. I highly recommend.

    Excellent Product

    • Written by from Kansas City

SS from Phoenix obviously failed to check the manufacturers website as all complaints in his/her review are clearly explained. Also, Mobee doesn't include a printed manual as they are a "Green" company and therefore encourage customers to download a manual if needed (this is also explained on their website). I suggest reading the review by AJ from Lenexa as it is on target. Oh...I recommend the product.

Solid Product - Packaging is misleading

    • Written by from PHOENIX

Solid product, charges fast and looks nice. The packaging is very misleading. The package states "THE MAGIC BAR - Wireless charger for the Apple Wireless Keyboard AND Magic Trackpad", however it only has one battery replacement unit for EITHER a Keyboard OR a Trackpad.....NOT BOTH. The graphics on the package show the Magic Bar with BOTH the keyboard and the trackpad......very misleading. If you actually want to use both the keyboard and the trackpad with the Magic Bar, you need to purchase an additional battery replacement unit from their web site at $29.90. The Apple store did not carry the additional battery replacement units. The package says "Keyboard AND Trackpad" would have been great to have two (2) battery replacement units in it.

Also, the unit comes with no printed instructions or information on where to get instructions.

The Mobee Magic Bar Charger is awesome and looks cool. It’s aluminum and comes packaged with a cylindrical battery pack that replaces the two AA batteries (in either your Apple Wireless Keyboard or Magic Track Pad) and a USB cable that connects the Magic Charging Bar to a USB port on your iMac, Mac mini or docked MBP as a power source. Initial charging of the battery pack will take about 6 hours. I ordered two (2) extra battery packs. One for my Magic Track Pad and the other as a spare for on-the-fly replacement when the battery pack in either the keyboard or track pad is drained.

If you only want to use the Mobee Magic Charging Bar to keep your Wireless Keyboard charged you don’t need an extra battery pack as you can re-charge and still use your wireless keyboard at the same time. The same applies if you only want to use the Magic Bar Charger for your Magic Track Pad. To replace the AA batteries in both the Wireless Keyboard and the Magic Track Pad you will have to order at least one (1) extra battery pack.

By my observations the Wireless Keyboard drains the battery pack at a faster clip than the Track Pad lasting about two (2) weeks on a full charge. Your experience may be more or less depending upon use. Mobee tech support told me the average life span of a battery pack is 3 to 4 years.

I’ve had none of the problems experienced by NC from New York or RC from Beverly Hills. I even charge a battery pack in the Magic Bar Charger w/o it being inserted into my keyboard or track pad.

So...how often do you purchase batteries for your Apple Wireless Keyboard and/or Magic Track Pad? Do the math and decide if the Mobee Magic Bar Charger is a cost-effective investment.

For a modest investment charging with the Mobee Magic Bar can be accomplished without powering on your iMac, Mac mini or docked MBP by ordering the Apple iPad 10W USB Power Adapter.
