    Tried multiple approaches...nothing worked

I really wanted to be able to use these cost-effective, and what seemed like sturdy products but they would not recognize my airport extreme driven network. Just my experience.

Does not preserve power state of power outage

    • Written by from Arnhem

I bought this device for building my smart home. Via IF (if this then that) I want to switch my central heating installation off in case CO2 is detected via one of my Nest smoke detectors. That is possible. BUT! In case of a power interruption the WeMo switch does not preserve the previous power state, it always stays off. In that case I always have to reset it manually. Very disappointed in this product!

I have 4 of these switches... They worked perfectly for a couple of weeks. One day the internet down and all of them had some kind of automatic reset and had to be re-paired. If you do a firmware update, chances are you will have to re-pair everything all over again. STAY AWAY FROM THEM. Their customer service is the worst ever.

    The perfect solution

Happy to say that unlike many reviewers here, the WEMO devices I installed work flawlessly. I did have an issue with one, but after a firmware update, that was fixed. The WEMO switches have been paired with a new Echo from Amazon too, so now all of the switches can be controlled by voice command - which just ROCKS! Love this setup.

If you find you have trouble, here are some basic tips that allow ours to work well.

First, make sure your wifi signal is strong and reliable. These devices rely on good wifi to work properly, and if your coverage at home is spotty, you're not going to have much success with this. We use a couple of new airport extremes, and they're working well. Measure the strength of your wifi signal with your iphone at each outlet you want to install a wemo device. That will help determine whether the location is viable or not. Next, if you're replacing an in-wall switch with a wemo switch, make sure you've wired it correctly. At first I did not, and subsequently the wemo didn't work. And finally, confirm that a device you're trying to control wemo with will turn back on when it has been turned off. Some electronics won't do that. If power goes out, they stay off until the power switch on the device is pressed again.

Was so looking forward to this

I have tried using a WEMO Insight switch for several months now. The idea and instructions make this seem like a simple device and execution. But the device just does not work. I've set and reset the rule for this thing multiple times. All I want it to do is turn on one lamp at sunset and turn it off several hours later. It only works if I turn it on manually through the app. Even though I turn it off manually before bedtime, it still comes back on.
I tried to contact tech support and was given a bunch of run around, finally getting a message that they no longer provide support through the Belkin site.
I should have returned this thing months ago. Thought I had a dud, but seems that others have similar problems. What's up with this?!?

Software is horrible. Devices turn on and off constantly. Remote access doesn't work at all. I bought it for timer feature. It never works. I have it set for 7:30 to 11:30. It comes on at 7:30 and then turns off and on frequently until 11:30. No help from company. Very frustrating product. Don't buy it.

I've had mine for a little over a year. They worked okay for about 9 months ( June 2014-March2015). Don't know what's happened but now they completely don't work.. They aren't detected. No suggested fixes work ( intact, you REALLY get screwed trying to fix it).
There is no customer service to call.... oh if you pay $100 they'll talk to you.
Don't waste your money. Nest needs to buy this company. Belkin is a joke as far as Wemo is concerned.

Worst Excecution of a Great Idea I've Ever Seen

    • Written by from PORTLAND

Einstein said The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. That is also the description for the WeMo Setup. If you follow the directions you can get the WeMo network up. Getting the WeMo to recognize your WiFi network is highly problematic. After the 4th or 5th time it worked.

Mine also keeps saying there is a Software Update available even immediately after doing the update. I show that I have 1.12 so it should be current. FWIW after saying it had successfully installed the update, the iPhone App kept saying it was installing the update.

Now having done the update, the schedule works and I can operate the WeMo at home, but I can't turn on "Remote Access" Maybe it will work tomorrow!!!!! Insanity again.

    These are horrible!

    • Written by from Granada Hills

We have a large house and need home automation. This is terrible. We have four Apple Time capsules that all look like they are one. It works perfectly. Belkin told me I had to separate the 2.4 form the 5 and rename all as different wifi for these to work. We did buy 8, but that is not a huge amount. Apple should not sell these.

I have had my wemo's for a couple of months. They were very difficult to set up and all of a sudden they all failed after a couple of months and will not connect to wifi, followed all instructions no to avail - FAIL. It appears that approx 40-50% of buyers (based on amazon, engadget and other reviews) have very significant problems and are very unhappy with product and customer service.

    Stay Away

    • Written by from Atlanta

Initial set up was a little bumpy but was able to get 2 switches up and running in about an hour. Worked fairly well for a short time - long enough for me to buy a 3rd switch. Took about an hour to get that one up and running. Then consistently over the next year one (or all three) would be offline or something would mess up and all three would have to be set up again. Huge time sink. I get nauseous thinking about how many hours I've sunk into keeping these home "automation" devices running. VERY poor product.

    Too many issues.....

    • Written by from Ashland

Setup is a pain and waiting for the SSID to broadcast takes too long. One of the ($30 additional) light bulbs burned out after 2 months (although I read they can last up to 30 years)! The two switches we bought are working well, but avoid the WEMO bulbs.

Wemo has tortured me for two years now

    • Written by from Minneapolis

I really really wanted this Wemo Switch to work. Sometimes it does work (for short periods) but eventually (1) will lose network connection or (2) will require a firmware update that will hose it.

After last firmware update - I reset the WEMO again. Took a few tries - but got it back up and running.

However - and this is trully bizarre...

Every time I try to turn it on/off with IOS Iphone app - this does work - but somehow it causes iphone to indicate that the "SIM IS INVALID"!!!

Huh? Then iPhone is essentially hosed until the iPhone is power-cycled,

How is this WEMO app messing with the SIM card validity? Still scratching my head on that one - makes no sense.

I am an electronics engineer - and I really want to see this work reliably - but this product has zero value if you cannot trust it to work.

Do not buy if you have more than one home

    • Written by from CALGARY

Very short sighted product. If you have more than one home useless you can not control switches in more than one location. For example if you put a switch in at your home and want to put a switch in at the cottage it will not accept it. It accepts the devices but does not display them and even better it locks the IOS device so you can NEVER see the other lights yet they look programed on site

    Great Concept

    • Written by from Havre De Grace

If you don't want to tear apart your wall & add a WiFi outlet or use these on the go, this product is perfect. Plu-In and use, very simple Set-Up too. I recommend the WeMo Insight if you are going to be using these several hours a day, those will show you usage & cost on the app. I use these for very simple purposes, exmp I have two space heaters pluged in for my pets and family when I am not home so I don't have to worry about getting cold or turning the object on or off. Switch is also great with IFTTT, a banner related app that can turn my heater on if Temp drops below or above Temp point, options are endless. Remember to have objects that can be turned on & off manually to the Switch otherwise it won't work. Most electronics have panels or touch screen and those items will not work with the Switch.

Belkin WeMo Light Switch - horrible

    • Written by from Ocoee

I'm fairly tech savvy and the difficulty of establishing a connection with the switch is beyond belief. I will be returning this product. This is such a simple concept, I am surprised that pairing is such a challenge for Belkin. And why did they release a product with such shortcomings? I will stay away from Belkin in the future. On the bright side, it did work fine as a non-automated, non-connected light switch!
