    ok hardware, useless software

A colourful 32GB USB flash drive. I bought it for two reasons, I thought I'd be less likely to loose it, due to it's bright colour, and because the box offers 32GB online backup storage.

The flash key is fine, although the finish is rough n ready and looks as if it's been finished in a school metal workshop. The software I found disappointing and a waste of time, to say the least.

Registering for the online backup storage was a bizarre: the window for registering the product said registration failed, also that the Lacie product code on the box for online storage was invalid. Then 2 mins later LaCie emailed me saying the account had in fact been setup! I attempting login, only to be given an 50 digit failure code without explanation. I'm unable to reset or create a new account with my email address. There is little support from LaCie.

If you want a colourful 32GB usb key, it's ok. Just don't even think of using LaCie software.

Fool me twice, shame on me

I to loved ther design of this unit, but after the second unit I purchased started to fail, I have become disenchanted with the pretty face. It mysteriously stopped working in two (not one, two) separate desktop PCs when plugged into the front USB Port at exactly the same time. Worked when I contorted and plugged it in to the rear port, but not the front. Less power in the front was the issue, according to tech support and so no warranty. Why did it work for 6 months and then stop. Sounds like weak and failing components, not a PC issue. I won't make this mistake again.

    CAUTION before purchasing

My second LaCie, including my fairly new 32GB RuggedKey stopped mounting. It started not reading regularly recently - and now it is just dead. Perhaps a waste of money.

This key failed entirely after about a month -- it is no longer recognized as a USB device. The data is apparently lost. Two other LaCie products (desktop external hard drives) have also failed in less than a year. I won't buy LaCie products anymore. (I fully expect storage media to fail after a while, but not as soon as these did.)

When I purchased this drive I forgot LaCie has no history of flash thumb drives. Grosso modo, transfered several times 18 Gb worth of files, and failed multiple times:

    - Drive overheated- very warm to the touch, never saw this in any 32 Gb drive ever
    - Drive failed to copy files (previously on Sandisk drives themselves)
    - Drive self disconnects - again, when testing larger data transfer.

I would give it 0 stars but there is no zero. I do no believe I got a lemon, as flash technology is known to be good in very few models- even then relative to the sophistication of the flash controller. this Lacie fails and the worse thing for a drive is data transfer failure. Speed is irrelevant.

Loss of data, waste of time, money and nerves!

After first unit stopped mounting, I thought this may have been a defective unit. I exchanged it without much problem. The second unit that they shipped to me stopped working too. Both times I lost data because it happened unexpectedly. They send me a new one, which stopped working too. I had to ask for my money back. All three of the units would become very hot quickly when plugged into USB 3.0 port of my desktop or laptop.

For 6 weeks, my Rugged Key was a 5-star performer. I would have written a glowing review like many others have done here. I loved it.

Then it simply failed. It self-dismounted off my desktop and never came back. Dead. Bricked. Now, like a substantial number of folks who had the same experience, I'm giving it zero stars if the site will let me.

Never had a USB drive fail. Ever. Never had any LaCie product (all excellent) fail before.

Word of advice about this USB drive, that I never thought would be necessary: BACK IT UP. Read the 1-star reviews before you plunk your cash down.

If you do buy, SAVE THE PACKAGING, because that's WHERE THE SERIAL NUMBER IS. And LaCie support has the nerve to ask for it. I didn't save mine. Who keeps packaging for a USB drive? And how would you know which drive goes which packaging if you buy more than one, as I did?

Long story short, after hemming and hawing they sent me a RECONDITIONED unit. So I'll ask for my money back.

Wish me luck. Hope yours is better.

CAUTION: Buy at your own risk!

I have owned not one, but two of these Rugged Keys and BOTH completely stopped working within a few months. Both of them stopped mounting and were completely inaccessible, no matter the mac or PC I plugged them into. This was incredibly frustrating and devastating, especially since they naturally stopped working the night before I had major papers, projects, and reports to turn in. I lost an incredible amount of crucial and irreplaceable data. Of course, I should have backed my data up but quite frankly, I didn't expect a flash drive that is marketed for its extreme durability to die on me within a few months. It's supposed to be heat, cold, drop, and water resistant but apparently it can't handle functioning properly for too long. Your money is better spent elsewhere - stay away!

    Completely failed after 40 days

I loved this drive and was using it more than my oral externals until two weeks ago when it decided to on completely disappear from my desktop. I tried it on a couple other computers and same thing. The drive is not seen. It still gets warm. But I had client work on there and now it's all gone. I can't get any info on how to fix it. Second Lacie failure for me.

    Use at your own risk!

    Failed - all data lost...

Don't buy this - mine failed after several months - all data lost - if you have one BACK IT UP and consider alternatives for critical information.

Symptoms: gets very warm, fails to mount on any machine, so can't be accessed.

    Great until...

You lose the orange piece because it slides off easily...not worth the price - trying a different one / different brand now.

Blocks Ports on Retina Macbook Pro

It looks great but poorly designed to work with a retina macbook pro. I use all the ports on my macbook when I'm at home so using this drive will either block one of the thunderbolt ports (i use both) or the hdmi port. It just sticks out too much to the side where the keyring attaches.

Mine worked for a few months. After that, the nice icon that appears on screen wasn't appearing, just the generic drive image. One day, all data was gone. Not so "rugged"...wasted money

Failed twice! I wish there was a "0" rating

My work got me this thumb drive and after about a month or so it failed. Lacie replaced it and also not even about a month, the second one failed again! Loosing valuable data. I will not get a USB thumb drive by Lacie again. Like the other posts, this thing does get pretty warm which I don't really notice on my PNY or Imation thumb drive.
