NO STARS!! Loses Data Repeatedly, Unreliable piece of GARBAGE

    • Written by from Cheltenham

I bought this drive to store media on my NAS as an attached USB drive. Formatted it as HFS+J, and within 2 weeks of operation, I had to do a recovery. Not thinking it was the drive, and blaming the NAS, I reformatted, loaded it up, and all was well for about 2 months. Now it has killed everything, again, so it is going into the garbage can. What a lot of expensive junk!

    NEVER AGAIN

    • Written by from Waleska

Just to recap: My sole reason for buying this LaCie was to make sure I didn't lose my data. Within four months, it stopped receiving power, which is not normal. It is defective. So, my options are to spend up to $1399 to get my data back, or send it back to you to fix it, but the data will be lost anyway. So, what is the point of buying this thing if I can only get my data by spending a ridiculous amount of money, even though it is defective and caused me to lose it in the first place. I don't think I will trust sending it back to be fixed and then chance losing even more data if I try it again. Purchasing this LaCie was a lose-lose situation for me, a total waste of money and a loss of my data. I gained nothing from purchasing your product, and lost a great deal. I didn't even have the option of getting a refund on the defective Lacie. Very poor customer service and no guarantee on their products.

Good Drive with Minor Installation Issues

    • Written by from Balitmore

I have been happy with the performance of this drive since setting it up to back up three separate Macs on my home network. Using an Airport Extreme, I now have a great piece of redundancy in place. Setup was a bit annoying as I needed to first plug the drive into a computer and could not setup over my network. This may be the case for any drive you plug into an Airport Extreme, but I feel like the LaCie software was the cause. Additionally, the LaCie installation software wouldn't fully install and allow me to register. This, of course, does not affect the performance of the drive which is extremely quiet--no sign of the mating of modem cacophony mentioned in a few reviews. None of the issues are dealbreakers since I don't really need the additional features offered, but you may run into issues if you are buying specifically for the additional software.

Ok hard drive, some big bugs that need fixing.

    • Written by from Westport

Storage and speed isn't an issue. Though I wish there was a Thunderbolt 2 port on it, I'm fine with USB 3. What I don't like is how noisy it can get (It sounds like two 56k modems are mating) and there's this weird bug where when it stays inactive for a little while it then kicks on with that same horrid noise, then locks up the computer for 10 seconds.

    Great Drive

    • Written by

I use this drive as an expansion drive on my iMac. 3TB capacity is a big plus for me. The drive is not too heavy, and read/write speeds are very fast with USB3. It was incredibly easy to setup and has been working without any issues since day one.

    Works great with my Mac

    • Written by

This drive is solid, silent and very fast. It was very easy to setup. I simply plugged it into my MacBook and it was recognized immediately. The enclosure and the supplied cables are good quality. The 3TB is a lot of space, and this allows me to save multiple versions of backups. Would buy again.

    Crashing Mac after 9 months

    • Written by from NORWALK

I have 2TB version was running well for 9 months. Then Mac stopped recognizing Time Machine, then simply plugging in the USB crashed the Mac. I tested on my other Mac - same thing, crashed it. I plugged in my other Lacie hard drive to test if it was the USB on my MBP; nope the old drive works fine -regrettably old drive is too small for my back ups. Very disappointed after such a short time. I don't leave this on 24/7. I plug it in from time to time to back up as I travel with my MacBook Pro.

    So far so good!

    • Written by

Plenty of storage space, and so far working as promised. Integrates seamlessly with Time Machine on my MacBook Pro. It's solid, quiet, very functional and looks nice too. No complaints, it does what it should and USB 3.0 is plenty fast.

    very stable and well designed

    • Written by

Works well so far. I use it for daily backups, which go pretty quickly over USB3 considering the amount of data I have. The drive is well constructed and was pretty much plug-and-play with my iMac. I've been using it for about a year and haven't experienced any problems with it.

    Buyer beware

    • Written by from Dayton

I bought the 2TB version and had problems from day 1. I have not been able to get support for the product so I've thrown my money away. The drive will not be recognized. It feels like a flaky connector and I've read similar stories.

    Excellent little machine

I needed a new hard drive because the one I had was low on storage space, and this drive was recommended to me by a friend. To date it has not given me a single problem. It's well designed, pretty quick, reliable and simple to use. The complimentary encrypted cloud service that came bundled with the drive is a good idea too, very useful for sharing files.

Great speed, high capacity, works flawlessly so far

    • Written by

The drive functions very well. The USB3 is really fast. The unit is quiet and comes with plenty of storage space, which is great as I use it for backups and to work with RAW images. The box design is top-notch. And the icing on the cake is the fact that the drive comes with easy-to-use encryption software. With all the snooping and security disasters like Heartbleed going on these days, it's good to have a drive that comes with the tools to keep my files secure.

    Worst customer service ever.

    • Written by from Centennial

This drive kept crashing my iMac and was constantly ejected itself. I had to use disk utilities to check the drive and then remount it. The drive is very noisy, and every time it woke up from sleep mode, the Mac would freeze up. I had captured kernel error message after each crash and had Apple Tier III engineers examine the data. The result was the USB device causing the shutdowns. When the USB disk drive was unplugged, no crashes. We tried everything (we being the Apple Tech)to fix this drive. You would think the LaCie company would have been gracious enough to send me a replacement drive. This problem started the day I hooked up to my computer. I give it one star because it does have a cool case.

Not compatible with new OS (Mavericks)

    • Written by from La Jolla

Purchased 2TB LaCie Porsche Design P'9233 and discovered it is not compatible with new Mavericks OS. Even in the older OS - it is a bit of a hassle to get the OS to recognize the external drive. No word from LaCie about when it will be compatible.

This is my second Porsche drive. I use it to backup my iMac, and store my music files. It works without any issues, and was very easy to setup. One cord to the computer, a second cord to wall power, and that's pretty much it. I like it.

    noisy

    • Written by from Chelmsford

I dont know if my drive is faulty or not but it is really noisy compared to what the reviewers are saying. I hear it spin up and down all the time. If it has been idle a long time and it spins up suddenly it makes this weird sound and the best way to describe it would be a old 56k modem. I think something is rubbing on a moving part of the drive. case maybe? Its the first day with the drive and im not impressed. Its pretty loud compared to my imac. The only thing good about it is compared to other 3.5 inch drives there is no fan noise from a fan. Yes its not as noisy as a drive with a tiny fan whirling at 5600rpms but quiet it is not.

Great item: the drive has a good looking aluminum enclosure and a top quality hard drive inside. It's fast, and very quite. Comes with great extras and a reassuring warranty. I only wish I'd bought it sooner.
