Do not buy if you plan on scheduling on/off for more than one time.

    • Written by from Calgary

I was under the impression that I could schedule the features of these bulbs, on/off, color and hue changes, etc.

This is not the case, a schedule only works once and then has to be reset. So if you need to regularly turn lights on/off so your home looks occupied this is not for you.

They do work well if you don't need scheduling, however for my purpose they don't work and I returned them.

good concept, TERRIBLE app and cust service

    • Written by from Scottsdale

This is a great idea executed very poorly. They obviously spent a lot of time on the bulb/hardware and the control app was an afterthought. I am returning my entire system after fighting with it and Hue's poor support for ~2 weeks. Some examples:

Advertised: "Can I turn hue into a wake up light? You can use the timer option and turn hue into your morning wake up call." [direct quote from Hue's website].

Reality: You can set a timer/alarm to fade in your lights. ONCE. You have to re-setup the alarm every day, there is no repeat option.
Additionally, I've only been able to set up 2 timers (I get an error in the app when saving the third timer that I have exceeded the allowed number of timers and I must deactivate one.) I own four bulbs in different rooms....having only two timers is a silly limitation that makes Hue not useful.

Avoid this until the app/software gets a bunch of these issues worked out.

    Nice, but needs better software

    • Written by from Dallas

Purchased starter pack, plus two single bulbs.

Turning off the light bulbs with a light switch, and then turning them on will default to bright white light. Prefer you could select the default or have the base station set the last setting when the bulbs connect.

The app does not allow you to directly set a color. You must have a photo with the color you want to select. This was disapointing when you are trying to get a specific HUE. I had to use Photoshop on my Mac to save a photo to my phone with the color palette I wanted.

Cool emerging technology that will only get better.

the hardware is bulletproof and the lights are mind blowingly clever. the colours are amazing. however probably the worst software ever to go with it. have had to re-install the app 4 times this week, only way to make the lights re-connect. rage inducingly frustrating.

so close philips, all you had to do was spend more then 3 minutes developing the app, i am returning my lights to the store today. what a shame. low rating reflects the app not the hardware

I love the bulbs, but the app is horrible!

    • Written by from Englewood

I love the bulbs. The app is dysfunctional. There're so many things wrong with the app that I can't cover them here. My biggest issues:

    1) Lighting is room focused. The app is "scene" focused. If you put your bulbs in different rooms the app's usability is diminished by an order of magnitude. If you create a new scene, it will automatically turn the lights on in all rooms unless you carefully do non-intuitive steps to avoid it. Most likely you will accidentally turn on lights in the bedroom while the wife is sleeping at least a few times a week. The page to change the color and intensity of the light FORCES you to use landscape mode. If you have your rotation locked it's impossible to do it. The page where you change color/intestinally has a control for every single light attached to the bridge. Even with three lights it's non-intuitive and error prone. Lights are numbered 1 2 3 .. n. If you don't memorize which bulb numbers are in which rooms you will certainly change the wrong light. I can't even imagine trying to use that page if you had 5 or 10 lights. If you have lights in three different rooms it will be extremely hard to not accidentally turn the light on and off in a different room. From the app, there is absolutely no way to know what lights will turn on with a given scene. The scene names are truncated at so few letters, you can't even name your scene something like "Bedroom - Purple" because it will be clipped. The app does allow for multiple pages to be created, so you can name each page a room and only put scenes for a room on that page, but because of bugs with scene syncing, you will find that your scenes get duplicated and rearranged on different pages so this hack becomes non-functional from the start.

    2) There is no simple straight forward way to turn a light off. You would link there would be a way to do this, but there isn't. You have to tap a scene in order for the off button to appear. The catch 22 is that if the light was already off, it will turn it on. Looking at a scene on the page gives no indication that it's the active scene or that it's on. Again, an obvious usability issue.

    3) Buggy! Timers don't work. All On/Off button doesn't work -- it's also a horrible idea anyway. Why would I want to turn on bulbs in multiple rooms and and off all at the same time? To make things worse, you can't delete the icon. If you log into the portal your scenes get duplicated and rearranged on different pages.
    4) My one complaint with the bulbs is the minimum brightness. In a completely dark room at night, the darkest you can make the bulb is actually pretty bright. Incandescence bulbs can get way dimmer than the led. If you are trying to get a room as dark as a few candles or a night light, don't even bother. Even if the fade in over 9 minutes worked, I think the lowest output is already so bright that it would abruptly wake me up in the morning.

Thankfully, with the exception of point #4, all of my complaints have to do with software which I think will be addressed by 3rd party apps and/or phillips. Over all I'm happy with the physical product even though the software is hideous. Honestly, I'm shocked Apple approved this for exclusive sale on their stores. It reflects very poorly on them.

    Great idea, but VERY BUGGY!

    • Written by from CAMBRIDGE

I really want to like these bulbs, and they generally work great if you just want to control the lights at home, however if you ever want to control these lights remotely, you're going to have a lot of TROUBLE! The servers that run the meet hue website is very buggy and they constantly go down or don't respond at all. It constantly asks you to reconnect and reconnect and you wait forever and nothing happens. If you want people to love this product, you're going to have to fix this Philips!

    Many problems with HUE

    • Written by from Tilburg

After using the HUE system for a couple of days now i am not happy. especial the application is very buggy and does things i don't expect.
I paid 200 euro's. I expect more from a Philips product that is "linked" to a "Apple audience".
If Apple should release this product, i should NEVER BE released at all !!

    The lightbulb:
    Can't make the color blue

randomly craches, even when i'm doing nothing with it.
Seems to be "busy" all the time (spinning indicator in the IOS bar on top of the screen)
When i have the swipe panel (white panel) in the up state and swipe it down, the messages panel from IOS comes down. (active areas are to close to each other)

Scenes do random change position in the list or end up in a new page that i didn't create
Scenes do sometimes disappear or suddenly re-appear. (in some cases the scene is in place but without an image)
Scenes sometimes group up colour pickers into one picker ( i didn't create this)
In one rare case i had 11 bulb markers in the beach scene. (i have only 3 bulbs)
When dimming the group slider to almost zero (scene dimming) bulb 1 goes off and the other two stay on. I can only switch bulb 1 back on by selecting another scene.
When selecting a scene the pencil (edit) button is relative small and does not respond directly when trying to touch

The settings for timers are not user friendly. When i change the time, 2 error messages pop up that i have set the maximum amount of timers. (why? changing = replacing)
Why are the timers called "alarm"?
Why are some timer icons grey and only one is red. (i assume it's related to the active scene, but that isn't true)
My current scene (relax scene) was switched off by a timer setting from another scene

    Internet (meethue.com site):
A lot of error messages (little red bar) with server/communication error message or full white page with " internal server error" while changing scenes.
Slow response of the website ( i have a 60Mbit internet connection and the Hue website takes up till 20 seconds to display )

Another (small) thing: You talk about the low power consumption of the bulbs, also when in standby, but you not say anything about the base station. ( if you talk about 0.0x Watt, then you also mention the 5Watt from the base station)

Great concept but far from viable - your paying to be a beta tester

    • Written by from Superior

The general response from Phillips is
Thank you fro your reply and for reporting all the issues you are experiencing.

Indeed, when using the Hue system with multiple devices, there are issues we are aware of and that we will address in future updates, which we hope will be available shortly.

We apologize for all the inconviniences.

Scenes don't properly migrate to be shared between my devices. I have deleted scenes repeatedly on both my iPhone and iPad only to have then reappear. The website shows some scenes associated to one device but not another - even though they were created on the device that is not shown to be selected.

I have deleted from the website too - but apparently some unwanted Scenes had already been copied back to one device or anther - so poof they still return. I should not have to put all devices in front of me and be on the website at the same time to delete everywhere at the same time and hope for the best.

Alarm settings don't transfer when a Scene does get transferred - but adding them back doesn't appear to create a new Scene just an odd version on one device. No idea which Alarm then takes precedence as only one shows on each device and the Website. Not good. So much for making changes when away - but then again that's not reliable either.

Remote operation when NOT in my network is anything but a certainty - it may work it may not. Logging in and out of the website portal for remote operation may or may not help - the login will report success and shoot you back to the app, but then the app fails when trying to adjust a Scene. Mere On or Off may work and often does - but this is not reliable or true remote operation.

All in all a heck of a lot of money for a system that while fun, falls way way way short on expectations. Phillips Customer Service is worthless. Lots of try this or try that - and yet when I report back that the suggestion did not work it's just a canned response about how we are aware there are issues.

If you have only one device and want to control only two bulbs maybe this will work for you - but if you have any desire to try and control multiple lights with multiple devices think again.

Good Idea but very dim light

    • Written by from hartford

Very easy to set up and initially really cool. At night they are not bright enough to light up a room. They are more of a toy rather than a practical improvement in your living space. I had them in for a week and took them out cause It is silly to have to swap out Hue bulb with real bulbs just so you can see.

    It was great for awhile

    • Written by from Chicago

They worked like a charm for about four months, no problems. Now, sometimes they don't turn on, sometimes they don't turn off. One day one won't connect, the next day another one won't connect. I've gone through the whole range of fixes, resetting the router, resetting the bridge, uninstalling and reinstalling the app, software updates, you name it. For $200, I want something that works not something that wastes my time and tries my patience.

    Great but don't buy yet

    • Written by from SLIDELL

Don't buy Hue Bulbs just yet. You will love them, but then they may develop a problem with no solution and you will have an expensive system that ultimately functions only as a much less expensive light bulb:

Bought the Starter Pack a few weeks ago and liked it so much I bought extra bulbs at about $50 ea. A few days ago, my wife had trouble controlling the bulb on her night stand. Yesterday I had trouble controlling all lights on my iPhone and today, none of the lights were controllable from iPhones. They will switch on from the socket, but only at maximum intensity and white color.

Problem is in the Bridge not recognizing the internet. Checked all the connections, disconnected and reconnected power, got a new LAN cable, tried different working LAN slots for other devices - problem NOT solved.

Researched it on the internet and found this is an ongoing problem since February 2013 (and increasing in number as the year progressed) with little support and no solution from company to date, other than what I outlined above that did not work today. Should have read this before I bought - but it showed up when I Googled 'Phillips Hue Bridge Problems'. Luckily I bought the Starter Kit at the Apple Store less than 30 days ago and get some of my money back. However the other 2 bulbs are mine to keep. They function pretty decently as regular bulbs (but $50 ones!!!) Luckily due to the cost, I did not do the whole house but had planned to. They will remind me to research new technology better before I buy.

    Waste of Money

    • Written by from Prince George

Was so excited to get this and am so disappointed in it... The app works intermittently. Turn off all lights and one of them stays on. Can't make it go off; actually had to switch the lamp off! Depending on where you stand in the house, the light that will be controlled will be whichever room your in, not any of the others, regardless of how you have them labelled! I wanted the system to set timers for off and on; this doesn't work either. Can't seem to use different programs for each light. It's all or nothing. Contacted Philips Hue support by email and no response for the past week...:( I would like my $ back.

No support, can't bridge starter kits

    • Written by from Edmonton

Easy to setup, however returned after 3 days. Read in blogs that starter kit bulbs are linked to bridge that came with it so can't buy additional kits and keeps second bridge if first one dies. Thius all linked bulbs to that bridge are useless. Blogs say there r ways of getting around this with a Phillips remote or a program but why all the trouble when $200 is spent. Tried face booking philips as no support regarding hue could be found. Even then no response.
Also 50 watt bulbs so depending on room size will need a lot of bulbs!

    DO NOT BUY!!!

    • Written by from Baltimore

I bought a 3 bulb starter pack a few days ago and it worked great.
However, I since went back to the Apple store to buy three additional light bulbs and none of these bulbs are recognized by the system. I tried resetting the hue brigade/remote and even when putting one of the new bulb in a socket that previsouly worked the new bulb is not recognized. I tried placing the new bulb very close to the bridge. Tried re-installing the iphone app (one never knows...). All of this to no avail. I now have three very expensive ($50 each) light bulbs that are useless. This system is NOT ready for primetime and is buggy. I recommend that everyone stay away from this and do not get tempted in spending the considerable amount of money.
The Hue system is just not working!

Philips hue bulb/lamp and bridge are not reliable

    • Written by from Noordwijkerhout

I have the Philips Hue for more than 6 months, overall the Hue bridge works fine but sometimes some of the lamps suddely shine brighter or does not go on at all. When a timer is set, mostly the lamps go on as set. But sometimes not all lamps (from a defined scene) gets on or some lamps are not turned off.

I tried everything but this Philips Hue bridge system is not reliable.

Bulbs are brilliant. Don't expect consistency from the pretty (poor) app.

    • Written by from San Francisco

Don't try to edit a scene on your iPhone. Even as you are designing it, the bulb colors and brightness settings will change without warning.

The settings will change even after you have saved them.

And if you try to edit your edited scenes on your iPad, the changes you made on your iPhone will not be transferred to your iPad. Scenes that you deleted on your iPhone will still appear on your iPad.

The cute handwriting font used to label scenes is unreadable.

Dear product manager: redesign this product from scratch. Watch users as they try to use it.

    Junk ripoff

    • Written by from La Canada

Bought a starter kit from an Apple Store. At first it worked great but now it can not properly run the last bulb in my bedroom. Stupid me. It tells me the bulbs are not reachable yet it will change color but will not turn the bulb completely off. The program was recently updated yet even using the "all off"" button no longer works. Rebooted my iPad and restarted the App and still would not work properly. Base unit I less than 24' away. Giant rip off. Kit is a terrible joke on me for trying to support what appeared to be a great effort. Don't waste your money.
